Martha Condit

EULESS, Texas – Martha Jean Condit, 71, of Euless, formerly of Winfield and Oxford, died Oct. 22, 2002.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 7:30.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice, 2501 Parkview Drive, Suite 600, Fort Worth, TX 76102.

Condit was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Oxford, to Marie (Campbell) and Leland Reece. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1949.

In 1996 she married Joe Condit in Martinez, Calif.

She had lived in Shawnee and Pittsburg, Calif., before moving to Texas six years ago. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Sears and Wards in the Kansas City area.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Condit, Euless, Texas; a daughter, Rhondra Drupp, Southlake, Texas; a son, Scott Nelson, Smithville, Mo.; two sisters, Erma Hopkins, Winfield, and Darlene Neve, Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Margaret Scott

PARSONS – Margaret E. Scott, 80, of Parsons, died Oct. 22, 2002, at the Labette County Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. C.K. Little will officiate. Following cremation, burial will be in Fort Scott National Cemetery.

Friends may call at Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.

Scott was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Green Forest, Ark., to Margaret E. (Snyder) and Dwight Frisby. She grew up in Green Forest and El Dorado and graduated from El Dorado High School and Butler County Community College. For a few years, she taught in a one-room country school.

On March 21, 1943, she married Edward E. Scott in El Dorado. They lived in California and several Kansas communities including Winfield before moving to Parsons in 1972.

Scott was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Her husband died Sept. 19, 1993. An infant daughter also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Larry E. Scott, Elkins, W.Va.; a daughter, Linda-Beth Cook, Parsons; three brothers, Ray Frisby, St. Paul, Minn., Wendell Tarman, Fort Morgan, Colo., and Wayne Tarman, Poway, Calif.; and three granddaughters.

Marion Brown

ARKANSAS CITY – Marion Elizabeth Brown, 80, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 23, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service tonight from 5 to 9. The family will greet visitors between 7 and 8.

Memorials have been established with the Salvation Army and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brown was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Fort Scott, to Marion (Moore) and Harry Warren. She was raised in Fort Scott and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1939. She graduated from Fort Scott Junior College in 1941 and from Pittsburg State Teachers College with a degree in education in 1943.

On May 27, 1944, she married Alfred R. “Brownie” Brown Jr. in DeRitter, La., during his military service.

She taught English, library science and home economics in schools in Cambridge, Lost Springs, Dexter and Oxford and retired in 1978 after 23 years of service.

After retirement she and her husband moved to Bartlesville to be close to their children. In 1988 they returned to Arkansas City where they resided at Presbyterian Manor.

Her husband died Feb. 9, 2001.

Brown was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and served as president of her college graduating class.

Survivors include two daughters, Margie Brookshire, Bartlesville, and Janice Sims, Arkansas City; a son, Robert Brown, Bartlesville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth Perkins

HOWARD – Ruth Maxine Perkins, 78, of Howard, died Oct. 22, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home between 7 and 8 Friday evening.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Perkins was born March 19, 1924, in Howard, to Hattie Faith (Miller) and Harvey Walter Baughman. She graduated from Howard High School.

On Oct. 23, 1943, she married Robert Carlton Perkins in Boise, Idaho, while he was stationed at Mountain Home with the U.S. Air Force. They lived in Boise briefly before she returned to Howard and he served his tour of duty.

A homemaker, she was also employed for several years at the Soil Conservation Service office in Howard. She and her husband operated their farm west of Howard. During the past few years, they had lived in Howard.

A daughter, Carla Beth Perkins, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Perkins, Howard; five sons, Max Perkins, Houston, Terry Perkins, Howard, Carl Perkins, Billings, Mont., Steven Perkins, Douglass, and Randy Perkins, Winfield; three daughters, Carol Perkins, Overland Park, Sharon Wagner, Howard, and Tracy McDonald, Waterloo, Iowa; and nine grandchildren.

Vetta Ingram

Services for Vetta Ingram were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Cheryl Harader officiated. Burial was in Floral Cemetery.

Music was “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Ingram's grandsons served as casket bearers.

Donald Brooks

BURDEN – Donald Brooks, 92, lifetime resident of Burden, died Oct. 23, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brooks was born Aug. 19, 1910, on a farm near Burden, to Edith (Church) and Banner Brooks. He was raised in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1931.

On April 12, 1940, he married Nina L. Ore in Burden. They lived and farmed in the Burden area throughout their marriage.

Brooks was a member of the Burden Baptist Church.

His wife died Dec. 16, 1999. A son, Harold Edward Brooks, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Eugene Brooks, and a daughter, Shirley L. Shelton, both of Burden; two sisters, Edna Steiner, Oxford, and Mary McCarty, Houston; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

John Adams

Services for John Robert Adams were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 1, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gale Rider officiated. Burial was in Caldwell Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace,” performed by guitarist Troy Adams, and “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” sung by Vince Gill.

Casket bearers were Bob, Earl , Josh, Troy and Wesley Adams, Steve Cross and Tony Sweet.

A fund has been established to help the family with expenses.

Orva Phillips

Orva Lee Phillips, 82, of Winfield, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Wichita Specialty Hospital.

The Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Miles Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, west of Winfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from noon until time for the Rosary.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Phillips was born Nov. 5, 1919, in Wichita, to Doris (Cranford) and Robert Orville Decker. She was raised and educated in Wichita where she attended East High School.

On Aug. 5, 1936, she married Henry J. Phillips Sr. in Wichita. Soon after moving to Prairie Grove, Ark., her husband joined the war effort and she moved to Dodge City.

After the war, they returned to Wichita. For many years, Phillips volunteered at St. Francis Hospital.

In 1970 they moved to Winfield where she volunteered many years with the William Newton Auxiliary. Her husband died March 21, 1985.

Survivors include three sons, H.J. Phillips Jr., Derby, Sammy Phillips, Winfield, and Mike Phillips, Burden; three daughters, Doris Swortwood, Wichita, Diana Perry, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Pat Fromm, Winfield; a brother, Stephen Decker, Scottsdale, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Ethel Miller

Services for Ethel Vina Miller were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 2002, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Wilma and Arlan Anglemyer sang “Precious Memories” and “The Old Rugged Cross,” and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace.”

Honorary casket bearers were Leora Bland, Darlene, Dwayne and Merrill Lauppe and Melvin and Morris Ruggles.

Casket bearers were Mark Jordan, David, Rick and Ty Miller, Randy Morton and Stephen Shoup.

Memorials have been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church and American Diabetes Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
