Chandler Caton
PENNINGTON, N.J. – Chandler Maynard Caton, 89, of Pennington, formerly of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Winfield, died Oct. 23, 2002, at Mercer Hospital.
Services were held Oct. 28 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Pennington. Burial was at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Drexel Hill.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Memorial Garden Fund, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 300 S. Main St., Pennington, NJ 08534.
Caton was born Nov. 18, 1912, on the family farm near Winfield, to Caroline Louise (Crapster) and Louis M. Caton. He graduated from Winfield High School and married Claudine Fowler.
A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Caton spent his entire career in the steel industry, first as purchasing agent for the Belmont Iron Works in Philadelphia and then as vice president of Industrial Mechanics and William A. Schmidt and Sons in Chester, Pa. He retired in 1987.
Caton was a former Boy Scout leader, a member of the Parish Life Guild at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and a former member of the Academy Court Property Owners Association.
His wife of 65 years, Claudine Caton, preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Chandler M. Caton Jr., West Hartford, Conn., and Philip B. Caton, Pennington; three grandsons; a niece, Barbara Caton Love-Lawrence, Winfield; and a sister-in-law, Mary Frances Caton, Arkansas City.
Maudie Alcorn
Maudie Emmaline Alcorn, 92, of Winfield, died Nov. 1, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Alcorn was born June 30, 1910, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to Stella Maude (Stogsdill) and John Steward Jarrett. She was raised and educated in the Mountain Grove area.
On Dec. 19, 1924, she married Lawrence Irvin in Mountain Grove. The family moved to Arkansas City in the 1930s. Her husband died in 1949.
On Aug. 30, 1950, she married Earl Washburn, and they made their home on a farm east of Winfield. In 1967, they moved into Winfield. A homemaker, Alcorn worked in area restaurants, including McGill's and the Western Drive-In, during the 1950s and '60s. Her husband died in 1971.
On Nov. 25, 1972, she married Lloyd Alcorn. She later married Harry Hornberger, and they lived in Winfield where she worked at Winfield Rest Haven. Both Alcorn and Hornberger preceded her in death.
She was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God and was affiliated with the Kansas Old-Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers.
Her three sons, Roy, Cecil and Johnny, and a daughter, Betty, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three grandsons, Ronald Irvin, Derby, Donald Irvin, Wichita, and Michael Irvin, Rose Hill; two granddaughters, Roy Ann Little, Douglass, and Debra Kirkes, Eufala, Okla.; 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Carol Lowe
Carol Leroy Lowe, 92, of 14348 132nd Road, Winfield, died Nov. 3, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Lowe was born Oct. 12, 1910, on a farm northeast of Winfield, to Bernice H. (Young) and Walter A. Lowe. He attended the Harmony District 97 grade school northeast of Winfield, Burden High School and Central Commercial College in Winfield. As a young man, he helped his family on the farm.
On Oct. 29, 1932, he married Opal A. Highsmith in Hutchinson. She died Sept. 2, 1991.
Lowe was a longtime farmer and also worked in the oil fields. He worked for John Subby and later for Butler Brothers for whom he drove a salt water truck and treated oil.
Lowe attended Tisdale United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Cowley County Landowners Association and the Farm Bureau Association and had served on the Tisdale Township board.
A son, Norman Eugene Lowe, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Hartpence, Winfield; a brother, Floyd “Bud” Lowe, Burden; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Orva Phillips
A Mass of Christian burial for Orva Lee Phillips was celebrated at 10 a.m. Nov. 4, 2002, at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Grete Palsmeier was the organist, and Gemma Palsmeier sang “Ave Maria.” Rosary music included “Sentimental Journey” and “Moon River.”
Casket bearers at the church were Darrel and Patrick Fromm, Tony Swortwood, Stephen and Chris Phillips and Jake Perry.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Bob Green
ARKANSAS CITY – Robert John “Bob” Green, 55, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 2, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. The Rev. Jerry Hooley will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the American Quarter Horse Association Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Green was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Wheaton, Ill., to Marion (Irvin) and Frank Green. He was raised in Wheaton and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1964.
During the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft engine mechanic in San Diego.
On Dec. 29, 1974, he married Darlene Schoonover in Phoenix. They moved to Clearwater and later to Winfield before moving to Arkansas City in 1988.
Green worked for Southwest Airlines as a senior power plant engineering technician at the General Electric Engine Maintenance Facility at Strother Field.
He was a member of Shelton-Beaty Post 18 of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Green, Arkansas City; three daughters, Kathy Green, Wichita, Susie Beeson, Arkansas City, and Vicki Winney, Lynnwood, Wash.; a son, Michael Bray, Arkansas City; his mother, Marion Green, Naperville, Ill.; two brothers, Jim Green, Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Bill Green, Naperville, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
Ralph Hearne
LATHAM – Ralph Hearne, 81, lifetime resident of Latham, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Lakepoint Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in El Dorado.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Latham United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Latham Cemetery.

Hearne was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Latham, to Mary E. (Rice) and George W. Hearne. He graduated from Latham High School in 1940.
On July 2, 1940, he married Nita Burden in El Dorado. They made their home in Latham for the 62 years of their marriage.
Hearne worked as a cowboy on ranches in the Latham area and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1944 until 1946.
After the war, he worked in construction for a few years. For 23 years he was manager of the feed store at Taylor Grain Co. in Douglass. He was later employed as a bus driver and maintenance worker for Leon USD 205 for many years. He also worked for the Latham Housing Authority from 1980 until his health failed.
Hearne was a longtime member of Latham United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Latham Masonic Lodge 401 and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Nita Hearne, Latham; a daughter, Peggy Newbanks, Houston; a brother, Warren Hearne, Bucklin; a sister, Mary Louise Bing, Wichita; and two granddaughters.
Guy Small
PRATT – Guy Basil Small, 67, of Pratt, died Nov. 4, 2002, at Pratt Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Larrison Mortuary. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Thursday.
Contributions may be made to the Guy Small Memorial Fund through the funeral home.
Small was born May 27, 1935, in Nottinghill, Mo., to Leona (Hesterly) and Robert Small.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army.
On Oct. 14, 1957, he married Sandra J. Carpenter in Wichita.
A retired supervisor for the Kansas Department of Transportation, Small moved from Salina to Pratt 13 years ago. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra J. Small, Pratt; three sons, Ronald M. Small, Goddard, Lonnie W. Small, Medicine Lodge, and Roy M. Small, Burden; four daughters, Vicki L. Whitehair, Hope, Rita Thurber, Winfield, Christi Bailey, Ellsworth, and Kathy Small, Lyons; a brother, James R. Small, Sawyer; two sisters, Betty Soper, Medicine Lodge, and Elinor Gallaugher, Isabel; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Maxine Mountain
Maxine B. Mountain, 80, longtime resident of Winfield, died Nov. 4, 2002, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Winfield Public Library and Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Mountain was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Coffey County, to Gladys (Hall) and LeRoy W. Breon. She was raised and educated in LeRoy.
On Jan. 4, 1940, she married Donald L. Mountain in Lyndon. They moved to Winfield in 1945.
Mountain worked as a saleswoman at JC Penney and later at Paul's Dress Shop. She then began working as a teller at First National Bank and retired in 1987 after many years of service.
Her husband died Nov. 15, 1973.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Groom and Bonnie Miller, both of Winfield; three sisters, Wanda Fields and Delores Tyrell, both of Osawatomie, and Frances Fowler, West Covina, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
