Montra Bergdall

OVERLAND PARK – Montra May Bergdall, 82, of Overland Park, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 5, 2002, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 Friday evening. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and the Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bergdall was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Winfield, to Ethel Ruth (Jordan) and Forrest Merrill Roberts. She attended Prairie Ridge School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937. She joined Grace United Methodist Church as a child and later attended Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Bergdall attended Southwestern College and Emporia State Teachers College. At the age of 18, she began teaching at Cameron School east of Arkansas City and later taught at the Tisdale and Prairie Ridge one-room schools.

On May 23, 1942, she married William Bergdall in Los Angeles, Calif. They lived in San Diego, Calif., and returned to Winfield in November 1942. From 1965 to 1974 she had a nursery school in her home, and from 1974 to 1983 she led the children's choir at Grace United Methodist Church. In 1989 she and her husband retired to Rogers, Ark., and in 1997 moved to Overland Park. She attended College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Bill Bergdall, Overland Park; two sons, Brenton Bergdall, Lenexa, and Randy Bergdall, Redding, Calif.; two daughters, Beverly Johnson, Rogers, Ark., and Bonnie Unruh, Olathe; a brother, Don Roberts, and two sisters, Ruth Scott and Jean Green, all of Winfield; six grandchildren, three stepgrandsons, four great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Ralph Hearne

Services for Ralph Hearne were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Latham United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dean Gilbert officiated. Burial was in Latham Cemetery. Latham Lodge 401 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed graveside rites.

Teresa McBeth was the organist.

Music included “In the Garden” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer,” performed by Ed Hodges and Teresa McBeth.

Casket bearers were Dale Bing, Alvin Hearne, Joe Holman, Landis Newbanks, Larry Price and Sammy Wright.

Memorials have been established with the Latham United Methodist Church and Latham Masonic Lodge 401.

Miles Funeral Hospital was in charge of arrangements.

Opal Montgomery

HALSTEAD – Opal Montgomery, 93, of Halstead, retired Winfield Rest Haven administrator, died Nov. 1, 2002.

Services were Monday at Kaufman Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven.

Montgomery was born Nov. 23, 1908, in the Boston Mountains around Harrison, Ark., to Minnie and Jessee Church. After her mother's death when Montgomery was three years old, the family moved to Cordell, Okla.

On May 15, 1922, she married C.D. Montgomery. In August 1935 they moved to Winfield where she was a homemaker and later administrator of Winfield Rest Haven. She and her husband later moved to Halstead. He died in December 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Mozell Riggs, Mesa, Ariz., and Nelda Holman, Halstead; a sister, Norma Fritschee, Cordell, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Carol Lowe

Services for Carol LeRoy Lowe were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ellie Foster and Don Roberts officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.

Irma Scholfield was the organist.

Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Precious Memories.” The congregation sang “Amazing Grace.”

Honorary casket bearers were Donald Hartpence, J.C. Kunneman, Floyd “Bud” Lowe, Ralph Russell and Bob Shaver.

Casket bearers were Bruce Gregston, Daren Lowe, Michael Lowe, Jerry McNulty, Shawn Shamburg and Steven Shamburg.

Memorials have been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Marion Brown

CAMBRIDGE – Services for Marion Elizabeth Brown were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 25, 2002, in Cambridge Cemetery. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff officiated.

Music included “The Lord's Prayer,” performed by Diane Staggs, and “Ave Maria,” performed by Janelle Ledgerwood.

Casket bearers were Jim Ashcraft, Chuck Brookshire, Bob Brown, Dustin Brown, Allan Sims, Brett Sims and Corey Stringfellow.

Memorials have been established with the Salvation Army and the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Graham

Betty June Graham, 85, of 1515 E. 13th, Winfield, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eugene and Betty Graham Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Graham was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Mount Hope, to Eva May (Wimp) and Harley Loren Graham. She was raised in Bentley and graduated from Bentley High School in 1935 and from Southwestern College in 1939.

On March 23, 1941, she married Eugene Graham in El Dorado.

A homemaker, Graham was active in the Democratic Party which she served as the Cowley County Democratic chairman for 20 years and vice chairman of the Democratic State Committee. She served as a delegate to three national Democratic conventions.

She and her husband lived in Winfield and Mesa, Ariz. He died in 1991.

Graham was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Southwestern College Alumni Association, Winfield Country Club and William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and was a Red Cross volunteer.

Survivors include a sister, Grace Dobson, Wichita.

John Hughes

John R. “Bob” Hughes Jr., 81, of 318 McCabe, Winfield, died Oct. 26, 2002, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the American Legion Post 10 Youth Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hughes was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Winfield, to Marie (Webster) and John R. Hughes. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1939.

A veteran of World War II, Hughes served as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps while stationed at Hickam Field in Hawaii. A survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, he was honorably discharged in 1945.

On June 8, 1940, he married Margaret “Margo” Burgoyne in Winfield where they made their home.

Hughes worked in the oil fields for a short time before beginning employment at Boeing Aircraft. In 1970, he began working for the Kansas Turnpike Authority as a toll booth collector. He retired in 1985.

Hughes was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was involved in the Boy Scouts and the church baseball team. He was also a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors, American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544.

Survivors include his wife, Margo Hughes, Winfield; a son, John R. Hughes III, Papillion, Neb.; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Martha Condit

Services for Martha Jean Condit were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26, 2002, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated, and Martha Brandenberg was the organist. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Richard Hopkins, Myron Krupp and Bill Condit.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Agnes Taylor

UDALL – Agnes Elenora Taylor, 83, of Udall, died Oct. 27, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Udall. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Taylor was born May 13, 1919, in Texline, Texas, to Mary Susie (Browder) and James Rammage. She was raised in Felt, Okla., and graduated from Felt High School in 1938. She attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Okla.

On Dec. 25, 1941, she married Luther H. Taylor in Boise City, Okla. They made their first home in Wichita. Following her husband's return from World War II, they moved to Felt. In 1950 they moved to Udall.

A homemaker she helped her husband run the family farm. He died Feb. 26, 2002.

Taylor was a member of the First Baptist Church. She volunteered at the Udall Senior Center, served as a 4-H leader and was active on the Maple Township Election Board.

Survivors include four daughters, Sue Floyd, Udall, Clara Regier, Newton, Linda Kay Morgan, Mukilteo, Wash., and Debbie Denton, Derby; three brothers, Jim, Bill and Joe Rammage; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Donald Brooks

Services for Donald Brooks were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 28, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Music included “I'll Fly Away” and “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” both performed by Jim Reeves.

Honorary casket bearers were Jerry Bryan, Carrol Harris, Don and Roger Snyder and Dick Warren.

Casket bearers were David, Jason and Mike Brooks, Brandon and Owen Rising, Jim Shelton and Tony VanSchuyver.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
