Ethel Miller

Ethel Vina Miller, 100, lifetime resident of Cowley County, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Tisdale United Methodist Church and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Miller was born Aug. 26, 1902, on a farm southeast of Winfield, to Edith G. (Bowser) and James Elza Ruggles. She was educated at Liberty rural school. After her schooling, she worked at the Cowley County Farm where she cooked and baked for elderly people. She was later employed in Winfield hospitals as a doctor's assistant. After working as an apprentice at Kerr's Beauty Shop, she owned the shop until she married.

On Oct. 15, 1935, she married Glenn F. Miller. They made their home on a farm near Tisdale throughout their marriage.

Miller worked as a hairdresser out of her home for many years. A homemaker, she also helped her husband run the farm.

In 1986 they moved to Winfield. She was a longtime member of Tisdale United Methodist Church where she was a member of a women's group.

Her husband died Feb. 23, 1987. A son, Curtis, and a daughter, Marlene, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Watters, Chicago, and Ronald Shoup, Tyler, Texas; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lee Skinner

PARK CITY – Ralph “Lee” Skinner, 55, retired Koch Industries employee, died Oct. 30, 2002.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mortuary, Wichita.

Friends may call at the funeral home tonight until 8.

Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for the education of his daughters, Ashley and Karlee, at Prairie State Bank, 330 N. Main, Haysville, KS 67060.

Survivors include a son, Terry L. Skinner, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; four daughters, Patricia L. “Trish” Rector, Haysville, Lisa Wilson, Wichita, and Ashley Moody and Karlee Skinner, both of Park City; his mother, Lydia Brown, Winfield; three brothers, Roy Griffin, Wichita, Bob Griffin, Phoenix, and Lewis Griffin, Texarkana, Texas; a sister, Jane Hall, Winfield; his caregiver and companion, Cindy Watts; and five grandchildren.

Bob Lynam

WICHITA – Bob Lynam, 86, of Wichita, retired tool and die maker, died Oct. 30, 2002.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dawson United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola. DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Civitan Club, 901 Porter, Wichita, KS 67203.

Lynam was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge 99, the Wichita Civitan Club and Hyde Park United Methodist Church. He tutored math at several grade schools in Wichita and was a Special Olympics volunteer.

His first wife, Dean, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Lynam, Wichita; a son, Lee Lynam, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Wanda McElhiney, Norman, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Doris Thompson, Wichita, and Carolyn Minson, Derby; a sister, Iva Milligan, Sedgwick; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Caroline Elam

Caroline C. Elam, 65, of Winfield, died Oct. 31, 2002, at her home.

Cremation has been effected. Following Elam's wishes, there will be no service. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Elam was born Aug. 8, 1937, in West Riverside, Calif., to Sylvia Marie (Nichols) and Chas C. Bracey. She was raised and educated in Riverside and Old Town San Diego, Calif.

On Dec. 22, 1982, she married Abe Elam. They made their home in Winfield where she worked as a custodian for USD 465. The couple moved to Bakersfield, Calif., but returned to Winfield in 1993. Elam also worked a number of years as a housekeeper at Good Samaritan Village.

Survivors include her husband, Abe Elam, Winfield; two sons, David Clayton, Wichita, and Mike Elam, Las Vegas; five daughters, Kathy Wallace, Bentonville, Ark., Patty Martin, Winfield, Terry Westfell, Florida, Kathy Miller, Burden, and Linda Platz, San Antonio, Texas; her father and stepmother, Chas and Esther Bracey, Chula Vista, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lisa Marie Kidd

ARKANSAS CITY – Lisa Marie Kidd, 18-month-old daughter of Jennifer (Braden) and John Kidd of Arkansas City, died Oct. 30, 2002.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Augusta. Hillside Funeral Home East, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the University of Kansas Medical Center for Liver Disease, c/o Hillside Funeral Home, 117 W. Sixth, Augusta, KS 67010.

Survivors in addition to her parents are her grandparents, Julie and Raymond Hutchinson, Arkansas City, Ed Kidd Jr., Atlanta, and Jim Braden, Burden; and her great-grandparents, Vernon and Ava Deets, Burden, Sally and Edmond Kidd Sr., Atlanta, Anita and David St. Peter, Wichita, Pat Braden and Robert Braden, both of Augusta, Ruthanne Collier, El Dorado, and Loyce and Darrel Crow, Winfield.

Montra Bergdall

Services for Montra May Bergdall were held at 1 p.m. Nov. 9, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Dr. D. Allen Polen and Lon Wiksell officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Loyette Olson gave a special reading.

Carolyn Eastman was the organist. Roxy Callison sang “I'd Rather Have Jesus,” “He Touched Me” and “Because He Lives.” Bethany Unruh sang “Ave Maria.”

Honorary casket bearers were Henry and Dorothy Bernard, Rich and Marie Potter, Cecil Morrell, Ralph and Ivy Lankton, Mildred Hower and Joe and Erma Sims.

Casket bearers were Jim Bowman, Lowell Holdorf, Doug Johnson, Greg Johnson, Jim Scott and Lyman Weigle.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and the Winfield Isle of Lights.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Lee

Richard Alan Lee, 46, of Winfield, died Nov. 8, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Douglass Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford Christian Church. Contributions may be made at the funeral home or church.

Lee was born Sept. 23, 1956, in Winfield, to Eva M. (Bowers) and Willard J. Lee. He lived in Douglass until fourth grade when his family moved to Oxford. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1974.

Lee and his wife, Lucretia, were married Aug. 1, 1991, in Oxford and made their home in Winfield. Lee was a finish carpenter and had been employed by Finwood Construction Co.

Survivors include his wife, Lucretia Lee, a son, Casey Lee, a stepson, Jeremi Tate, and a stepdaughter, Rachel Tate, all of Winfield; his mother, Eva Lee, Oxford; three brothers, Maurice Lee, Oxford, Mark Lee, Lawrence, and Mike Lee, Winfield; and a sister, Mary Ann Gordon, Winfield.

Eleanor Lockhart

Services for Eleanor (Albright) Lockhart were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 9, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. Lewis Gilbreath officiated.

Memorials have been established with the USD 465 Foundation Lockhart Music Memorial and Winfield Rest Haven.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frank White

CEDAR VALE – Frank E. White, 80, of Cedar Vale, died Nov. 10, 2002, after an extended illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

White was born June 17, 1922, to Charlotte and John White, in the Round Mound community 10 miles northeast of Cedar Vale. He attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1940.

In 1941 he married Treva Sartin in Cedar Vale.

From 1942 to 1945 he served in the U.S. Navy and was discharged at the end of World War II as an aviation machinist's mate first class.

In 1948 he graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor of science degree. For five years he was a vocational agriculture teacher in Alma. In 1953 he returned to Cedar Vale to begin a career in farming which continued until he and his wife retired in 1997.

White was active in the Associated Milk Producers Dairy Cooperative in the 1970s and 1980s. He served on the board of directors and assisted with the merger of various cooperatives in the Midwest. He also served on the board of the multi-state organization and traveled extensively for AMPI.

White was a longtime 4-H leader; served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher of the First Baptist Church; was a member of the Cedar Vale hospital's board of directors; and served on the USD 285 board.

Survivors include his wife, Treva White, Cedar Vale; two sons, Frank White Jr., Valley Center, and Robert White, Wolfe City, Texas; a daughter, Cheryl Raborn, Junction City; a sister, Ferne Monholland, Cedar Vale; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Sofia Hawley

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sofia Hawley, 74, of Iowa City, died Nov. 11, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Cambridge Cemetery. Lensing Funeral Service of Iowa City and Miles Funeral Service of Winfield are in charge of arrangements.

Hawley was born March 15, 1928, near Zamosc, Poland, to Julia and Wladyslaw Koltun. During World War II, she was put to work on a German farm, and after the war, remained in Germany, living for a time in a displaced persons camp and working in a variety of service jobs.

In 1952 she met U.S. Army Lt. Ellis W. Hawley, then stationed in Germany, and on Sept. 2, 1953, they were married in Heilbronn, Germany.

In 1956 they came to the United States, first to Washington, D.C., and then to Denton, Texas. In 1968 they moved to Columbus, Ohio, and in 1969 to Iowa City, where she finished raising her family and was involved in school, gardening and club projects.

Survivors include her husband, Ellis Hawley, and a son, Arnold J. Hawley, both of Iowa City; two daughters, Agnes F. Freese, Niwot, Colo., and Christine J. Cruise, Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
