Mary Ellen Hunter

DOUGLASS – Mary Ellen Hunter, 98, formerly of Douglass, died Nov. 9, 2002, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Douglass Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.

Hunter was born Aug. 19, 1904, in rural Logan County, Okla., to Laura (Causey) and Elam Valentine. She was raised and educated in Supply, Okla. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress in the LaVerne, Okla., area.

On March 15, 1939, she married Edward Hunter in Arnett, Okla., and they made their home in Supply. A homemaker, she was also a caregiver for her sister, Christina, her brother, Aaron, her mother and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1946 she and her husband moved to Douglass. They later purchased a cabin in the mountains of Colorado.

Her husband died Feb. 3, 1970. She had resided at Riverview Manor since January 1999.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Frank Holderman

EL DORADO – Franklin Pierce “Frank” Holderman, 74, of rural El Dorado, died Nov. 13, 2002, at Greenwood County Hospital, Eureka.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka.

Holderman was born Dec. 10, 1927, in Hamilton, to Edith Christina (Lebow) and Grover Cleveland Holderman. He attended rural school in the Yates Center area.

On March 26, 1949, he married Clara Lodema (Bunyard) Kennon in Wichita.

For many year he worked at Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita. He was later employed at Cessna while he owned and operated the Pawnee Furniture Store. In 1978 he began working in the spray paint shop at Boeing and retired in 1990.

He attended the Baptist Church for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Lodema Holderman, El Dorado; three sons, Larry Holderman, El Dorado, and Dennis and Gerald Holderman, both of Haysville; a brother, Alden Holderman, Lawrence; a sister, Emilie Naccarato, Newberg, Ore.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Birdie Hogan

ARKANSAS CITY – Birdie Irene Hogan, 91, formerly of Winfield and a longtime resident of Elk County, died Nov. 13, 2002, at Medicalodge East Healthcare Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Longton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 5 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hogan was born Nov. 30, 1910, in Chautauqua County, to Ida (Burdick) and William McAfee. She was raised and educated in Chautauqua.

On June 29, 1927, she married Chester E. Hogan. They made their first home in Hewins, then moved to Elk County near Sedan. She was a caregiver at the nursing home and worked as head cook at Keeney's Restaurant in Sedan.

Her husband died Aug. 23, 1967.

She lived in Winfield from 1994 until moving to Medicalodge East earlier this year.

Hogan was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Aden E. Hogan, Fredonia, Carl C. Hogan, Neodesha, and Vernon L. Hogan, Longton; two daughters, Twilla Smith, Winfield, and Carol A. Gabbert, Arkansas City; two sisters, Lena Gurwell, Wichita, and Dorothy McElmurry, Tulla Lake, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Jack Embrey

Jack K. Embrey, 86, of Winfield, died Nov. 13, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 10, 115 W. 10th, Winfield, KS 67156, or the Kansas Veterans Home Activity Fund, 2420 Vietnam Memorial Drive, Winfield, KS 67156.

Embrey was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Bliss (now Marland), Okla., to Bertha Durand (Yingling) and John Thomas Embrey. He grew up in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas and graduated from Central High School in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1932. After high school, he worked at various jobs in Texas, Kansas and California.

On Dec. 9, 1940, he joined the Kansas National Guard in Arkansas City. President Franklin Roosevelt mobilized the National Guard that month. The Arkansas City unit was part of the 161st Field Artillery Regiment and was sent to Camp Joseph T. Robinson for training. At the outbreak of World War II, Embrey's unit was sent to the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific and was there 26 months. The unit was later sent to the European Theater for 10 months and was there at the end of the war.

After his military service, Embrey went to work in the clerical department of the Santa Fe Railroad. He retired in 1977 after 30 years of service.

On July 20, 1947, he married Velta “Peggy” Releford. She died Dec. 30, 1962.

On Jan. 29, 1965, he married Clara M. Gravell. She died Jan. 14, 1998.

Embrey was a member of the First Christian Church, Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine Temple, Cowley County Shrine Club, Midian Temple Camel Herders, American Legion Post 10, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3544, National Association of Retired and Veterans Railway Employees, Unit 25, National Railway Historical Society, Oxford Coin Club, American Association of Retired Persons, 35th Division Association and 209th F.A. Battalion Association.

Embrey was active in church and Masonic activities. He received his 50-year Masonic pin in 1997. He served as Legion Post 10 chaplain, historian and editor of the post newsletter, “The Bombshell.” In 1992 his history placed first in national competition and in 1997 the newsletter placed first in its category in national competition.

Embrey formerly served on the board of directors of Meals on Wheels and drove for that organization.

Survivors include a brother, Leland E. Embrey, Frederick, Md.

Sofia Hawley

CAMBRIDGE – Services for Sofia Hawley were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 14, 2002, in Windsor Township Cemetery. Dean Keplinger was the speaker, and Lynn E. Kelley and Rebecca Holt were the vocalists.

Casket bearers were Lynn E. Kelley, Keith W. Holt, Curtis D. Keplinger, Charles C. Liebau, Bradford S. Hawley and Timothy J. Freese.

Miles Funeral Service and Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City, Iowa, were in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ellen Hunter

DOUGLASS – Services for Mary Ellen Hunter were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 14, 2002, in Douglass Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Valentine officiated.

Music was “Precious Memories,” sung by Jim Reeves.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Jesus Abasolo

WELLINGTON – Jesus J. Abasolo, 72, of Wellington, died Nov. 14, 2002, at his home.

A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, both at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The Rev. Andrew W. Seiler will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Renal Care Group, 1007 N. Emporia, Wichita. Contributions may be made through Frank Funeral Home.

Abasolo was born Feb. 6, 1930, in Haysville, to Juana (Landeros) and Abraham L. Abasolo.

On Aug. 5, 1950, he married Mary Ruth Rodriguez at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army.

Abasolo was a machinist at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for over 20 years. He retired in 1994.

He was a member of St. Anthony and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Abasolo, Wellington; three sons, John Abasolo, Denver, Greg Abasolo, Wellington, and Andres Abasolo, Wichita; seven daughters, Cecelia Newman, Carmen Harshfield and Eloisa Bennett, all of Wellington, Catherine Richardson, Mulvane, Georgianna Abasolo, Lawrence, Connie Sayler, Oracle Ariz., and Amelia Austin, Rose Hill; a sister, Lola Aguilar, and a brother, Magdaleno Abasolo, both of Wellington; 34 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Jack Embrey

Services for Jack K. Embrey were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 16, 2002, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Wilma Anglemyer was the soloist, and Martha Brandenberg was the organist. Ken Burrow of the Royal Scottish Pipers of Wichita performed “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe.

Arkansas City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254 provided military honors.

Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed a committal service.

Honorary casket bearers were Don Fowler, Wayne Birdsong, Joseph Whitehead, Ernest Hensley, John Baker, Albert Mann, C.H. “Buss” Elam, Fred Bard, Jim Conrod, Virgil Dye, Bill Long, Jane Lamb, Joe Walker, Ken McCanon, Sharon Reed, Merle Snider, Herb Smith, Larry Oglesby and Ron Keith.

Casket bearers were Jimmy Ryker, Bill Thornton, Jim Buterbaugh, William R. Morris, Keith Wood, Jim Day and William Davis.

Memorials have been established with American Legion Post 10 of Winfield and the Kansas Veterans Home Activity Fund.

Harriet Weyant

Harriet Ester Weyant, 85, longtime resident of Winfield, died Nov. 16, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Abilene Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Weyant was born July 20, 1917, in Abilene, to Ester (Messing) and Gilbert W. Weyant. She was raised in Abilene until her senior year in high school when the family moved to Detroit. She graduated from high school in Detroit in 1935, then returned to Abilene and worked there for several years.

In 1941 she began work as a receptionist at a doctor's office in Northville, Mich. In 1957 she moved to Winfield and was employed as a medical records clerk at Snyder Clinic. In 1987 she retired after nearly 30 years of service.

Her sister, Agnes Keller, and her husband, Sam, cared for Weyant for four years before she moved to Winfield Rest Haven in March.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sister, Agnes Keller, Winfield.
