ARTHUR, Chris S. Arthur, 54, Atchison, KS passed away Sunday, July 23, 2006 at his home.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, July 27, 2006 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison Humane Society or the American Cancer Society and left in care of Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.
Mr. Arthur was born April 4, 1952 in Atchison, KS the son of Ed and Elizabeth Arthur. He was a graduate of Atchison High School. Chris had worked for Ft. Leavenworth Prison as a grounds keeper and at Benedictine College. He later self employed with numerous ventures one of which included stocking and supplying vending machines. Chris was a member of Pete’s and Time Out coffee club. He was a caring and loving father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife Debra Foley Arthur of Syracuse, NE. Step children Christy Eylar and her husband Erik Wardle of Ft. Collins, CO; Nixie Eylar and Alvin Eylar of Syracuse, NE. A grandson Ezekiel Beel of Syracuse, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Phillip “Bud” Arthur.
BILDERBACK, James L. “Butch” Bilderback, 50 years old, of Cummings, KS., died Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 24th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Norma Thompson, Pastor of the Cummings United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Cummings Cemetery, Cummings, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Sunday, July 23rd, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Mr. Bilderback was born on Oct. 17th, 1955 in Atchison, KS., the son of and Anna Lee ( ) Bilderback. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, and from the N.E. K. Vo-technical auto mechanics classes. Mr. Bilderback worked as a storekeeper for the Kansas Correctional Prison in Lansing, KS. He retired in 1995. Butch was a member of the Cummings United Methodist Church, and enjoyed furniture making and woodworking. He also loved to go deer hunting.
He was married to Carol Lewman on April 8, 1979. They were later divorced. Survivors include a daughter; Gina Bilderback, Cummings, KS., his mother; Anna Lee Kirkham, Cummings, KS., a sister; Judy Cummings, Cummings, KS., and two grandchildren; Hope M. Moorshead and Curtis L. Bilderback, Cummings, KS. His father, a son; Anthony J. “Tony” Bilderback, preceded him in death.
GLATTFELDER, Raymond Kenneth Glattfelder, 97 years old of Cummings, KS. died Saturday, July 15th, 2006 at the Village Villa Nursing Home, Nortonville, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 at the Cummings United Methodist Church with Rev. Norma Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Cummings Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, July 17th, 2006 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, visitation will follow until 8:30 PM. Mr. Glattfelder was born on August 10, 1908 at the family home on Lincoln Rd in Cummings, KS., the son of Henry and Anna L. (Cline) Glattfelder. He graduated from Atchison High School, and attended Emporia State Teachers College, Emporia, KS. Mr. Glattfelder was a teacher for 14 years teaching in Potter, Arrington, Nortonville, Locust Grove, Pardee and Effingham, KS. He farmed, was a stockman, and dairy farmer the rest of his long life in the Cummings Community. Mr. Glattfelder was a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served from 1944-1946 as the Post Adjutant assigned to Camp Algona, a home for 10,000 prisoners of war camp in Algona, IA during World War II.
Mr. Glattfelder was a member of the Cummings United Methodist Church, had the distinction of being the oldest living member of the American Legion Post #6, Atchison, KS., was a member and Grand Master of Masonic Lodge #266, Nortonville, KS.,. He also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Cummings Cemetery
Board from 1956 to 1995.
He is survived by two nieces, a nephew, his cousin, Raymond and his wife Judy Kramer, Nortonville, KS., and several other cousins. His parents, three brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.
DOWNING, Larry Ray Downing, 61, of Raymore, MO., passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at his home after a short battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Rushville Christian Church, Rushville, MO. Burial at Armstrong Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Friday, at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave. Atchison, KS 66002. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grandview Foundation for the Larry R. Downing Scholarship Fund, the N.H.S. Diana Bundy-English Award, Grandview High School or the DeKalb Alumni Association for Scholarship and left in care of the funeral home.
Larry Downing was born July 28, 1944, grew up in Rushville and spent most of his professional life in the Grandview area. A 1962 graduate of DeKalb High School, he followed with degrees in English and administration from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville and Central Missouri State in Warrensburg. He married Marsha Ann Dunavan of Atchison, KS., on December 21, 1968.
All of his professional career as an educator was with Consolidated District #4 Grandview, MO as an English teacher, administrator and hearing's administrator where he spent over 37 years encouraging others. Throughout the years he wore many hats as National Honor Society sponsor, Together Grandview liaison, Pep Club sponsor, Honorary Thespian, Young Writer's Conference Master of Ceremonies, Administrator of the Year by the MO Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). Selected by his English peers he received the very first award given for his accomplishments as a poet presented at the Young Writer's Conference. People attended retirement dinners at the end of the year just to hear Larry's latest creative "Send Off" poem for a new retiree. Larry, as well as Marsha, were recognized in the same year as "Educator of the Year" by Grandview Community Teachers Association in 1985. He was proud of having the distinguished honor of being a vice-principal for the longest consecutive number of years in the state of MO. Organizations fought over his time as he devoted hours to the Grandview Retirement School Personnel Association as an officer and president, emceed for DeKalb and Rushville Alumni Associations and appeared as a perpetual entertainer at various yearly events.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, William Raymond Downing and grandmother Ruth LaRue Downing both of Phoenix, AZ, grandfather Charles Henderson and wife Hazel Linville of Rushville, MO. and mother-in-law Olive E. and father-in-law Clayton A. Dunavan of Atchison, KS.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Downing of Phoenix, AZ., his wife of thirty seven and a half years, Marsha A. Downing of Raymore, MO., sister Cheryl and husband Terry Mullins of Tempe, AZ., brother Dennis Downing and Anna Spencer of Allentown, PA., and sister Rhonda and Alan Otlo of Gilbert, AZ. Other survivors include brother-in-law Myron A. Dunavan and wife Patricia of Topeka, KS., sister-in-law Miriam "Ava" Dunavan of Atchison, KS. Other beloved aunts and uncles include: Dr. Tom and Lois Kelly of Phoenix, AZ., Ernie and Norma Jean Downing of Buckeye, AZ., Charley and Ruby Downing of Montpelier, ND., Charlotte Kuhn of Atchison, KS. and Betty Ruth Woolston of Mesquite, TX. Many God-children, nieces, nephews, family and friends who loved and cherished Larry, were inspired and nurtured by him.
This humorous, meek man woke up each morning saying each day was a beautiful day full of song, inspiration and love. He believed in education for everyone and treated other people the way he wanted to be treated. "Trust me and love me" he said repeatedly to his wife and she did.
ALBERT, Betty Marie Albert, 84, Atchison, KS passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.
Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Friday, July 14, 2006 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The body has been cremated. Mrs. Albert was born September 22, 1921 in Harrisburg, PA the daughter of John and Kathryn Grace (First) Frenie. She was a 1939 graduate of William Penn High School in Harrisburg, PA, and attended Duke University. She was employed as a head secretary for the credit department in Calument City, IN for Sears and she retired as a legal secretary at the Harrisburg State Capitol Savings and Loan. Betty was a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, and the Atchison United Methodist Church were she was ordained to give communion to people who couldn’t attend church. She was a member of the Methodist Women’s Club, the Republican’s Election Committee and Board. Betty enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs Baseball team and the Pittsburg Steelers Football, and she especially loved taking care of animals, traveling and swing dancing.
She married Lester Earl Albert on February 14, 1941 in Harrisburg, PA. He preceded her in death on September 27, 1986. She was also preceded in death by a sister Jane Ashby and her parents.
She is survived by her sons Lester Albert, Jr. and his wife Toni of Carrabelle, FL; John Albert and his wife Mary of Hammond, IN and Michael Albert and his wife Cindy of Atchison, KS. 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Brother John Frenie of Pittsburg, PA and a sister Carol Frenie of Florida. A stepmother Louise Frenie of Pittsburg, PA.
WEITLICH, Betty Jean Weitlich, 75, Winthrop, MO passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Champ officiating. Burial at Sugar Creek Cemetery, south of Rushville, MO. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Macular Degeneration Research Foundation or the American Diabetes Association and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Weitlich was born March 14, 1931 in Rushville, MO the daughter of William and Elsie (Bednar) Browning. She was a 1948 graduate of Rushville High School. She attended St. Joseph Junior College and was a graduate of Northwest Missouri State Teachers College of Maryville, MO. She began teaching at Savannah, MO and later taught at Pleasant Valley School at Rushville, MO. Betty was employed with Medicalodge for 20 years as a CNA. She was a member of the Rushville Sugar Creek Christian Church. Betty loved spending time outdoors and being in her garden. She especially loved her family.
She married Robert R. Weitlich on April 26, 1951 in St. Joseph, MO. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include a son Ron Weitlich and his wife Connie of St. Joseph, MO and a daughter Linda Weitlich of Winthrop, MO. Grandchildren Brandon Crockett, Vanessa Weitlich and John Weitlich. Brothers and sisters William Browning and his wife Loretta of Rushville, MO; Judy Steele and her husband Don of St. Joseph, MO; Eddie Browning and his wife Nancy of Rushville, MO; Mary Shuck and her husband Bob of Atchison, KS and Robert Browning and his wife Jane of Atchison, KS.
WEISHAAR, Rita Marie Weishaar, 81 years old, of Nortonville, KS. died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at the Heartland East Hospital, St. Joseph, MO.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 30th, 2006 at the St. Joseph Church, Nortonville, KS., with Fr. John Reynolds as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Nortonville. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Thursday, June 29th, 2006 at the St. Joseph Church with visitation to follow until 8:30 PM. The O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville is in charge of the arrangements. Rita Marie Weber was born on July 8, 1924 at home south of Atchison, the daughter of Lawrence and Florentine (Zelfer) Weber. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School and worked for a short time at St. Mary’s College, Leavenworth, and then at Blish-Mize Company in Atchison, KS. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of the St. Joseph Church, Nortonville, KS., and the Altar Society. Mrs. Weishaar enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and raising flowers. She especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
She was married to Raymond J. Weishaar, on Oct. 6, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Church south of Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29th, 2000. Survivors include three sons; Gary Weishaar, Atchison, KS., Rick Weishaar, Topeka, KS., and Tim Weishaar, Topeka, KS., two daughters; Brenda and husband, Dean Rice, Horton, KS., and Beverly and husband Chris Domann, Nortonville, KS., a brother; Larry Weber, Atchison, KS., three sisters; Geraldine Gering, Atchison, KS., Marlene Lutz, Nortonville, KS., and Imogene Kentzler, Atchison, KS., and ten grandchildren. Her parents, husband and a son Raymond Weishaar Jr., 1954, preceded her in death.
