Fess Fesler

HEWINS – Services for Lyman Francis “Fess” Fesler were held at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 20, 2002, at the Church of Christ. The Rev. Kendall Fox officiated. Burial was in Ozro Falls Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Bill House, Larmon Holroyd, Maurice Utt, Kermit Murphy, Mike Young, Michael Young, Clyde Kyger, Alfred Burdette and Bernard Lemert.

Casket bearers were David and Ryan Bohannon, Don Cole and Jim and Jack Fesler.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and the Hewins Church of Christ.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Viola Collins

Viola T. Collins, 84, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Nov. 18, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Evangelical Free Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Collins was born Oct. 29, 1918, on a farm north of Winfield, to Orella (Coffelt) and Wiley Ross. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937.

While in high school she began working as a ticket agent and usher at the Regents Theater.

In the early 1940s she married Charles L. Collins, and they owned and operated the Coffee Cup Restaurant. She later began employment at the Cowley County office of the United States Department of Agriculture. She worked there more than 20 years as a program administrator for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

Her husband died Aug. 16, 1971.

Collins was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include a son, Robert Collins, Wichita; a sister, Mildred Knowles, Napa Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Manny Carrillo

MESA, Ariz. – Manuel Alberto “Manny” Carrillo, 34, of Mesa, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 3, 2002, in Mesa.

Burial was Nov. 10 in El Ultimo Adios Cemetery in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Carrillo was born Jan. 16, 1968, in Ojinaga. In April 1973 his parents and their four children immigrated to Winfield where he resided until 1986. He then relocated to Mesa where he resided until his death.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Carrillo, Matthew Carrillo and Adam Carrillo, and his ex-wife, Gail Carrillo, all of Mesa; his parents, Agustin and Margarita Carrillo, Alpine, Texas; four brothers, Agustin Carrillo Jr., Winfield, Jose Raul Carrillo and Jorge Carrillo, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Daniel Carrillo, Childress, Texas; and four sisters, Maria del Carmen Rodriguez, Maria Luisa Vargas, Maria Isabel Carrillo and Margarita Carrillo, and his grandmother, Enriqueta Carrillo, all of Alpine, Texas.

Harriet Weyant

Services for Harriet Ester Weyant were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 20, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Dr. D. Allen Polen officiated. Music included “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is Well With My Soul.”

Burial was in Abilene Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Saylor officiated.

Casket bearers were Larry Hatteberg, Kevin Keller, Ross Largent and Robert McKimson.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Winfield Rest Haven.

Thomas Davidson

MOLINE – Thomas Darvin Davidson, 80, longtime resident of Moline, died Nov. 19, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate.

Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 of Moline will conduct military honors at 3 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery at Elk City.

A memorial has been established with Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Davidson was born Jan. 20, 1922, in Elk City, to Lida Flo (Reed) and Edgar Lee Davidson. When he was a child, the family moved to Moline where he graduated from Moline High School in 1941. During high school he played all types of sports and later played third base for the New York Yankees farm team in Kansas City.

After high school he began working for the Corps of Engineers ammunition plant in Parsons and was later transferred to the defense plant in Eudora. In 1942 he entered the Army and served in the European Theater during World War II. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star with three clusters, the French Croix de Guerre and several other decorations.

After Davidson was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946, he began working for Conoco. He also served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. He retired from Conoco after more than 37 years of service.

Davidson was a member of Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388; Hope Lodge 155 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Howard, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Independence.

Survivors include a son, Tommy Lee Davidson, Chandler, Okla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wendell Robinson

Wendell Ray Robinson, 49, of 1421 Torrance, Winfield, died Nov. 21, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Cremation has been effected.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Robinson was born April 22, 1953, in Rogers, Ark., to Letha Rosina (Gau) and John Edwards Robinson.

Raised and educated in Eureka Springs, Ark., Robinson was employed as a truck driver for various companies.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Robinson, Springfield, Mo., and Eddie Robinson, Winfield; his mother, Letha Robinson, Winfield; his father, John Robinson, Eureka Springs, Ark.; two brothers, Randall E. Robinson and Roger L. Robinson, both of Winfield; and seven grandchildren.

David Kesler

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – David A. Kesler, 72, of Grand Junction, died Oct. 15, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction.

A celebration of his life was held Nov. 9 at his home. Martin Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Kesler was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Meiling Kesler, Grand Junction; a son, Leland Kesler, Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Stephanie Kesler, Anchorage, Alaska, and Songya Kesler, Grand Junction; and four grandchildren.

Carolene Newlin

LITTLE ELM, Texas – Carolene Anne Newlin, 68, of Little Elm, died Nov. 19, 2002, in Carrollton, Texas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

Memorial contributions to a charity of the donor's choice may be made through the funeral home.

Newlin was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Geuda Springs, to Amanda (Hauser) and Walter Graham. She attended grade school in Geuda Springs and later moved with her family to Winfield. As a teenager, she worked for a local dry cleaning business and graduated from Winfield High School in 1951.

On Jan. 30, 1952, she married Leslie G. Newlin in Houston where they made their first home. In 1971 they moved to Lubbock, Texas. She began working as an insurance adjustor for USF&G Insurance in 1974 and retired in 1997. Her husband died Dec. 24, 1984.

Survivors include a son, Billy Newlin, San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Cathy Mayfield, Lewisville, Texas; a stepdaughter, Virginia Gray, Hays; two sisters, Alene Miller, Winfield, and Irene Koby, Mabank, Texas; a brother, Delbert Graham, Winfield; four grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Steven Berry

FORT WORTH, Texas – Steven Karl Berry, 40, of Fort Worth, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 20, 2002.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita.

Mid-Cities Funeral Home of Haltom City, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

Berry was born Aug. 2, 1962, in Winfield to Edna and Robert Berry. He graduated from Winfield High School.

A maintenance worker with Findley Resources, he had lived in Fort Worth for two years.

Survivors include three children, Erin, Kelsey and Emily Berry; two brothers, Jim and Mike Berry; and two sisters, Shirley Farber and Linda Zimmerman.

Justin Brown

Justin Bradley Brown, 27, of Winfield, died Nov. 21, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident east of Udall.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established as a college scholarship trust fund for Brown's fiancee's daughter, Alexandria, and his nephew, Tyler. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brown was born Nov. 19, 1975, in Winfield, to Deambra Jane (Nichols) and Roger Garth Brown. He attended school in Winfield and later in Arkansas City where he graduated from high school in 1994. In high school he played football and basketball.

Brown received his associate's degree in criminal justice from Cowley County Community College. He moved to Huntsville, Texas, where he attended Sam Houston College for a short time.

In 1998 he returned to Winfield where he worked at Pizza Hut and Burger King. He was employed as a stock clerk at Cessna Aircraft at the time of his death.

Brown was a volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cowley County.

Survivors include his fiancee, Laura Peacock, and her daughter, Alexandria Zimmerman, Winfield; his parents, Deambra and Ray Stevens, Arkansas City, and Roger and Linda Brown, Wichita; a brother, Chad Brown, Belleview, Neb.; a stepbrother, Shane Fisher, Winfield; a stepsister, Sabrina Bonilla, Wichita; his grandparents, Ray and Virginia Nichols and Barbara Buck, all of Winfield, Joann Brown,Wellington, and Ray Stevens, Augusta; and his great-grandmother, Genevieve Chism, Winfield.

Martha Shelden

LUBBOCK, Texas – Martha Gene Shelden, 101, died Nov. 19, 2002, at Carillon Retirement Center in Lubbock.

She was born to Martha (Calvert) and J.G. Shelden in Fort Scott in 1901.

For many years she taught home economics in El Dorado schools before joining the faculty at Oklahoma State University in 1950. She later taught at Texas Tech in Lubbock.

Survivors include a nephew, Forrest J. Robinson, Winfield.

Viola Collins

Services for Viola Thelma Collins were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 22, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Schaefer officiated. Kathy Waite performed “Amazing Grace.”

A memorial has been established with the Evangelical Free Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Cortest

Josephine M. Cortest, 80, of 315 Millington, Winfield, died Nov. 23, 2002, at her granddaughter's home in Wichita.

The Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Cortest was born Jan. 19, 1922, at Tisdale, to Nicolasa (Carrizales) and Maxinino Manriquez.

On April 13, 1942, she married Concepcion “John” Cortest in Winfield. He died in 1998.

Cortest worked as a dietary aide at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center for 33 years until retiring in 1990. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lupe Villa, and a sister, Carmen Hernandez, both of Winfield; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
