Robert Baughman
WICHITA – Robert George “Bob” Baughman, 66, of Wichita, formerly of Howard, died Nov. 16, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Grace Lawn Cemetery
in Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Renal Care Group of Wichita, 1007 N. Emporia, Wichita, KS 67214. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Baughman was born Nov. 26, 1935, in Howard, to Welma Blanche (Anderson) and George Philip Baughman. He attended Upper Paw Paw rural school and grew up on a farm nine miles northwest of Howard.
In 1956 he moved with his family to Wichita and remained there until returning to the Howard community in 1968.
Disabled throughout his life, Baughman worked in furniture moving and at a pool hall in Howard for several years.
In 1982 he returned to Wichita to live with his mother and receive dialysis treatment for the remainder of his life.
Survivors include a brother, Eldon Baughman, Rogers, Ark., and two sisters, Virginia Rozelle, Hudson, Fla., and Nadine Taylor, Augusta.
Frances Kerbs
WELLINGTON – Frances Lucylle Kerbs, 84, of Wellington, retired St. Luke's Hospital housekeeper and Glasco Drug Store sales clerk, died Nov. 16, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ. Paul Hendrickson will officiate. Cremation has been effected.
Memorials have been established with the Church of Christ, 217 W. 13th, Wellington, KS 67152, and Wheat Capital Manor, 400 South C, Wellington, KS 67152.
Kerbs was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Del City, Okla., to Florence (Halverstadt) and George Meredith.
On Sept. 20, 1942, she married Lawrence Kerbs in Columbus, Ind. He died in December 1991.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Kerbs, Shawnee, Okla., Leland “Lee” Kerbs, Wellington, and LaRoy “Pete” Kerbs, Winfield; two daughters, Linda Reeve, Salina, and Lynette Kerbs, Winfield; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Louise Campbell
EMPORIA – Louise Theresa Campbell, 99, of Emporia, formerly of Moline, died Nov. 15, 2002, at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. today at the Moline United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gary Parsons officiated. Burial was in Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Moline United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Campbell was born March 17, 1903, in Basehor, to Louise (Krembzow) and John Herman Korb. She attended school in Fairmont and graduated from Oread High School in Lawrence.
On March 18, 1925, she married Glenn Marcus Campbell in Leavenworth. They purchased the Longton Bakery and remained there for six years before moving to Holly, Colo., to operate a bakery. In 1935 they purchased a bakery in Moline and operated Campbell Bakery there for more than 40 years. Her husband died Sept. 19, 1984.
Campbell was a past worthy matron of Ladonia Chapter 243 Order of Eastern Star in Elk Falls and a longtime member of the Moline United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women and the Lamplighter Sunday school class.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Edward G. Campbell, Emporia; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Fess Fesler
HEWINS – Lyman Francis “Fess” Fesler, 82, of Hewins, died Nov. 16, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hewins Church of Christ. Burial will be in Ozro Falls Cemetery
at Hewins.
Friends may call until 7 this evening at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale.
Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and the Church of Christ.
Fesler was born April 9, 1920, on a farm near Hewins, to Almeda (Winchell) and Henry H. Fesler. After his mother's death in 1925, he and his brother were raised by their father on a farm southwest of Hewins. Fesler was educated in Hewins and Cedar Vale schools.
At an early age he began working on area ranches. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Kenneth Williams and W.F. Meisch and the Chautauqua County road crew. He later became a rancher and never retired from his life as a cowboy.
On Oct. 22, 1938, he married Irene Oller. She died in 1985.
On Feb. 16, 1991, he married Doris Jackson in Dexter.
Fesler was a member of the Hewins Church of Christ and served as a Sunday school teacher for over 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Fesler, Hewins; a daughter, Velma Kare, Brownsville, Texas; four stepdaughters, Carol McLaughlin, Houston, Anita Utt and Tammy Kelly, both of Cedar Vale, and Norma Ragan, Rohwer, Ark.; two grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren
Judith Weldon
WICHITA – Judith Aleen (Bell) Weldon, 65, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 17, 2002.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 8021 W. 21st North. Burial will be in Kechi Township Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hillside Funeral Home East from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wichita Children's Home, 810 N. Holyoke, Wichita, KS 67208.
Weldon was a social worker for the Kansas Children's Service League.
Survivors include her husband, Russell D. Weldon, Wichita; two sons, David H. Weldon, Wichita, and Jeff Weldon, Derby; two daughters, Susan Stevenson, Glenview, Ill., and Carrie Claassen, Whitewater; and 12 grandchildren.
Carolene Newlin
Services for Carolene Anne Newlin were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 23, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Maple City Cemetery.
Eugene Shields performed “A Hill Called Mount Calvary.” Irma Scholfield performed “Amazing Grace,” “Precious Memories” and “He Leadeth Me.”
Casket bearers were Shane and Chad Young, Jeff and David Gray and Ike and Kirk Koby.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Margaret Stamper
FLORENCE, Ala. – Margaret Stamper, 75, of Florence, died Nov. 22, 2002.
Services were at 11 a.m. today at Spry Serenity Chapel in Florence. Brother Harry Underwood officiated. Burial was in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Stamper was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Henry A. Stamper, Florence; a son, Glenn H. Stamper, Madison, Ala.; a daughter, Gloria Jean Stamper, Adamsville, Tenn.; a sister, Dorothy Johnson, Wichita; a brother, Shirley Stout, Winfield; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edith Richardson
HOWARD – Edith Mary Richardson, 95, longtime resident of Howard, died Nov. 22, 2002, at the Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Julie Shields will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery
north of Howard.
A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Richardson was born Feb. 23, 1907, on a farm north of Howard, to Mary Edith (Miller) and John Charles Oliver. The family moved to Missouri when she was an infant. She began school there before returning to Kansas and attending Cresco, Antioch and Fiat rural schools in the Elk County area.
On Jan. 23, 1924, she married Jesse E. Richardson in Howard. They owned and operated a farm west of Howard for many years.
Her daughter, Beverly Ann (Richardson) Lazarus, died Feb. 17, 1974, and her husband died Jan. 9, 1988.
A homemaker, Richardson was active in the Elk County Extension Council and taught classes in canning and preserving food. She served as a 4-H leader and worked many years for the Howard Fair Association. She was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her grandsons, Mark Lazarus, Corinth, Texas, and Daniel Lazarus, Grapevine, Texas; and two great-granddaughters.
Misha Davis
Misha Ariann Davis, 20, of 908 E. Eighth, Winfield, died Nov. 21, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident east of Udall.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at Miles Funeral Service from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established as a scholarship trust fund through Commercial Federal Bank in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or bank.
Davis was born July 25, 1982, in Winfield, to Montie Kay (Davis) and Timothy Doom. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 2000. She was attending Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City.
Davis had been a waitress at Gallaway's and was employed at Wal-Mart at the time of her death.
Survivors include her fiance, Dustin Knight, her mother, Montie Kay Davis, and her brother, Corey Davis, all of Winfield; her half-sister, Amie, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and her grandparents, Bill and Jo Rita Davis, Winfield, Celia Chace, Wichita, and Patrick and Linda Doom, Wichita.
Vern Case
ARKANSAS CITY – Vern M. Case, 82, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 23, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn. Oxford Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Case was born March 31, 1920, in Arkansas City, to Leota W. (Reynolds) and George A. Case. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1938.
On March 9, 1942, he married Helen Louise McKibben in Miami, Okla. They later divorced.
On Feb. 29, 1968, he married Jerry Barker in Newkirk. She died June 21, 1996.
He then remarried his first wife on Nov. 24, 1996, in Arkansas City.
Case worked for several years at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital before retiring in 1985. He served on the Arkansas City Commission from1983 to 1985 and was mayor of Arkansas City in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Case, and two stepsons, Richard Arland Barker and Michael David Barker, all of Arkansas City; and a half-sister, Dorothy J. Hawkins, Springfield, Mo.
Phyllis Nichols
BURDEN – Phyllis E. Nichols, 84, lifelong resident of Burden, died Nov. 23, 2002, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.
Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Nichols was born Aug. 12, 1918, on a farm west of Burden, to Frances (Wiegle) and Ansel B. Shannon. She was raised in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1936.
On Sept. 19, 1936, she married James E. Nichols in Perry, Okla. She lived on their farm for 66 years. Her husband died Oct. 10, 1989.
A homemaker, she was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church where she had served as president of the United Methodist Women. She was a Sunday school teacher and youth group sponsor, served on several committees and was also a member of the the choir for 50 years. She had also been involved in the Jolly Neighbors Club and the Cowley County Landowners Association.
Survivors include her son, Stanley Nichols, Winfield; her daughters, Nianne Mohlstrom, Wichita, and Sue Simmons, Burden; her brother, Doyle Shannon, Winfield; her sisters, Blanche Leftwich, Burden, and Naomi Howard, Wichita; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Margaret Pearson
OXFORD – Margaret H. Pearson 73, of Oxford, died Nov. 22, 2002, at Riverview Manor.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Dennis Clough will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service tonight until 8 and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and the Oxford Needs and Opportunities Fund. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors include a son, Michael Bonesteel, Austin, Texas; a daughter, Cyndee Unger, Oxford; a stepson, Wayne Etter, Wellington; a brother, Jim Witte, Oxford; and three grandchildren.
Sidney Watrous
Services for Sidney Alan Watrous were held at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 23, 2002, at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. George Gardner officiated. Inurnment was in Highland Cemetery.
James Leland was the organist. The Fairmont String Quartet, John Harrison, Catherine Consiglio, Andrew Kolb and Nancy Lutterell, performed. Watrous' niece, Elsie Monlollon, played the dulcimer.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Martha Prothro
Martha “Jackie” Hurd Prothro, 88, formerly of Udall, died Nov. 23, 2002, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.
Friends may call at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane tonight until 8.
Memorials have been established with the Morton County Community Theatre Group and the Alzheimer's Disease Association. Contributions may be sent in care of the mortuary, 347 S. Laura, Mulvane, KS 67201.
Prothro was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Hugo, Okla., to Gladys (Jones) and Harvey J. Penington. She grew up in Antlers, Okla., and was class salutatorian when she graduated from Antlers High School in 1933.
In 1950 she and her husband, Pat C. Hurd, moved from Mulvane, where they owned and operated the Cub Cafe´, to the Udall community where they purchased the Udall Telephone Co. Now named Wheat State Telephone, the company and its subsidiaries are still owned and run by the family.
Prothro's first husband, Pat C. Hurd, died in October 1974. Her second husband, Raymond Prothro, died in 1995.
She had resided at Cumbernauld Village for nine years.
Survivors include her daughters, Temple Lee Reed, Rolla, and Sally Ann Young, Garfield, Ark.; a brother, John Raymond Pennington, Sarasota, Fla.; a half-sister, Jane Tanner, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.
Billy Bohannan
BOLIVAR, Mo. – Billy Bohannan, 73, of Bolivar, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Nov. 25, 2002.
Pitts Chapel of Bolivar will announce arrangements. Cremation has been effected.
Bohannan was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Cedar Vale, to Mabel and Newton Bohannan. He was raised on the family farm and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Bohannan graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Montana State University and a master‘s degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin. In addition to doing graduate work, he was an instructor in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin.
Bohannan retired after 28 years as an assistant director of wood engineering research at the U.S. Forest Service laboratory in Madison, Wis.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Bohannan, Bolivar; a son, Bruce Bohannan, Lafayette, Colo.; a daughter, Robin Lipstein, Boulder, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Joangelia Westmoreland, Wynne, Ark., and Laura Covington, Eureka Springs, Ark.; two brothers, Cecil Bohannan, Topeka, and Rollin Bohannan, Cedar Vale; a sister, Betty Boss, Osage City; three grandchildren and four stepgrandsons.
Wendell Robinson
Services for Wendell Ray Robinson were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 25, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Private inurnment will be later.
Music included “Seven Spanish Angels,” by Willie Nelson, and “Footprints in the Sand,” by Cristy Lane.
