Anna Peirce

EL DORADO – Anna Peirce, 91, of El Dorado, died Nov. 25, 2002, at her residence.

Services were at 2 p.m. today at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial was in Burns Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Burns United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Peirce was born May 6, 1911, in Garden City, Mo., to Vina (Kiser) and William Reid. She grew up in Garden City.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she married Robert T. Peirce in Garden City. They moved to El Dorado in 1934 and to the rural El Dorado area a short time later. He died June 17, 1995.

A homemaker, Peirce was a member of the Burns United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Sunday school and taught Bible school.

Survivors include two sons, Ray W. Peirce, Hesston, and Jim R. Peirce, Winfield; a daughter, Margie Burns, El Dorado; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Justin Brown

Services for Justin Bradley Brown were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 26, 2002, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gordon Tasker officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Doug Miller gave the eulogy, and Dixie Stull read from scripture.

Music included “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” sung by Vince Gill, “Wrapped Up in You,” sung by Garth Brooks, and “The Dance,” sung by Chad Brown.

Casket bearers were Dirk Foust, Rodney Mann, Ryan Martin, Bill Nilles, Danny Patterson, Paul Petersen, Kory Robinson and Daniel Stiner.

A memorial college scholarship fund for Brown's fiancee's daughter, Alexandria, and his nephew, Tylar, has been established at CornerBank.

James Bell

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – James Maurelle Bell, 82, of Chattanooga, died Nov. 26, 2002.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the U.S. National Cemetery. Dr. Ron Tankersley will officiate. Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Bell was born June 25, 1920, in Winfield, to Erma and Nathaniel Bell. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II.

Bell retired from Dixie Portland Flour Mills where he worked in transportation for 45 years and was a member of the Chattanooga Traffic Club. He was also a member of the Loret Villa Boat Club and the U.S. Coast Guard.

His wife of 59 years, Mary Alice Bell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Gaston and Connie Danner; a son, James Bell; a sister, Marie Barker, Winfield; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Batson

HOWARD – Marjorie Mary Batson, 91, of Howard, died Nov. 27, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Howard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Julie Shields officiating. Private burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

She is survived by her husband, John Batson, and several nieces and nephews.

Maudene Ross

Maudene Daniels Ross, 86, longtime resident of Winfield, died Nov. 26, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Private burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Senior Center at Baden Square. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Ross was born June 12, 1916, in Udall, to Winnie (Leach) and Robert Rutter. She was raised and educated in Udall.

On Oct. 20, 1934, she married Marshall Daniels. They made their home in Winfield where she worked for Binney & Smith for more than 25 years. Her husband died Jan. 4, 1977.

On June 24, 1978, she married Inger M. Ross in Newkirk, and they made their home in Winfield. After they retired, they spent winters in south Texas. Mr. Ross died Jan. 18, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Don Daniels, Winfield; three grandsons, three great-grandsons and three stepgreat-granddaughters.

Justin Brown

Justin Bradley Brown, 27, of Winfield, died Nov. 21, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident east of Udall.

Services were at 10 a.m. Nov. 26 at Miles Funeral Service. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established as a college scholarship trust fund for Brown's fiancee's daughter, Alexandria, and his nephew, Tylar. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brown was born Nov. 19, 1975, in Winfield, to Deambra Jan (Nichols) and Roger Garth Brown. He attended school in Winfield and later in Arkansas City where he graduated from high school in 1994. In high school he played football and basketball.

Brown received his associate's degree in criminal justice from Cowley County Community College. He moved to Huntsville, Texas, where he attended Sam Houston College for a short time.

In 1998 he returned to Winfield where he worked at Pizza Hut and Burger King. He was employed as a stock clerk at Cessna Aircraft at the time of his death.

Brown loved children and enjoyed his volunteer work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cowley County. He loved weight lifting, softball and Kansas City Chiefs football.

Survivors include his fiancee, Laura Peacock, and her daughter, Alexandria Zimmerman, of the home; his mother, Deambra Jan (Nichols) Stevens, and his stepfather, Rex Stevens, Arkansas City; his father and stepmother, Roger and Linda Brown, Wichita; a brother, Chad Brown, and his wife, Lisa, Bellevue, Neb.; a stepbrother, Shane Fisher, Winfield; a stepsister, Sabrina Bonilla, Wichita; his aunts and uncles, Cindy and Larry Lake, Bloomington, Ill., Steve and Lynn Nichols, Littleton, Colo., Robyn and Ron Parker, Wichita, and Ross and Jana Brown, Wellington; his grandparents, Ray and Virginia Nichols, Winfield, and Joan Brown,Wellington; his stepgrandparents, Barbara Buck, Winfield, and Ray Stevens, Augusta; his great-grandmother, Genevieve Chism, Winfield; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Bob Brown and Helen Stevens.

James Corder

AVA, Mo. – James Franklin Corder, 92, of Ava, died Nov. 26, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Robert Sorensen officiating. Burial will be in Ava Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Corder was born March 12, 1910, to Henry Franklin and Frances Gertrude (Pullium) Corder.

On April 6, 1933, he married Ada M. Bohannan in Sedan.

Corder moved to the Ava area from California in 1976.

He had been employed as a heavy equipment mechanic and worked for Livingston Graham Sand and Gravel in El Monte, Calif., until retiring in 1975.

Corder was a deacon of Bethany Baptist Church of Ava.

His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Jo Weyrauch, Squires, Mo., Nita Kimes, El Dorado; Jean Wischow, Simi Valley, Calif., and Janice McKail, Tacoma, Wash.; two sons, Jim Corder, Ava, Mo., and Jerry Corder, Santee, Calif.; a brother, Carl Corder, Winfield; a sister, Thaice Lange, Weippe, Idaho; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Misha Davis

Services for Misha Ariann Davis were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 27, 2002, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.

Music included “Across the Universe,” “Sister,” “Fur Elise” and “Violin Concerto No. 5 in D Minor.”

Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Clara Wickstrom and Rose Marie (Sengmany) Wise.

Casket bearers were Terri Avery, B.J. Birkle, Grant H. Cole Jr., Randy Kaiser and Jamie and Steve Markley.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Nichols

Services for Phyllis E. Nichols were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 27, 2002, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ellie Foster and Reta Joy Campbell officiated.

Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang “I Believe in a Hill Called Mount Calvary” and “O, That Will be Glory.” Keith Anglemyer was the organist.

Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Bob and Marge Briscoe, Dorothy Clower, Pauline Miller, Don Roberts, Melvin Ruggles, Ruth Scott, Bob Shaver and LeRoy Wheeler.

Casket bearers were Jess Biddle, Tim Bumgarner, Kevin Howard, Eric Mohlstrom, Derek Nichols and Ty Simmons.

Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Rockhold

ARKANSAS CITY – Michael Lynn Rockhold, 45, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 28, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Cremation has been effected. Private services will be held later. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rockhold was born March 30, 1957, to Rocky and Pat (Elam) Rockhold. He attended Arkansas City schools and lived in Parsons for several years before returning to Arkansas City.

Survivors include his son, Eli Rockhold, Parsons; and his parents, Rocky and Pat Rockhold, two brothers, Duane Rockhold and Drexell Rockhold, and two sisters, Christine Simmons-Martin and Teresa Whitener, all of Arkansas City.

Steven Berry

FORT WORTH, Texas – Steven Karl Berry, 40, of Fort Worth, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 20, 2002.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita.

Mid-Cities Funeral Home of Haltom City, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

Berry was born Aug. 2, 1962, in Winfield to Edna and Robert Berry. He graduated from Winfield High School.

A maintenance worker with Findley Resources, he had lived in Fort Worth for two years.

Survivors include three children, Erin, Kelsey and Emily Berry; two brothers, Jim and Mike Berry; and two sisters, Shirley Farber and Linda Zimmerman.
