Ruth Riley

DEXTER – Ruth Riley, 88, of rural Dexter, died Dec. 8, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hicks Chapel southeast of Dexter. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Miles Funeral Service.

An education scholarship fund has been established through the Cowley County 4-H Council and Hicks Chapel. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Riley was born July 18, 1914, in rural Manchester, Okla., to Emma (Wood) and Guy Cromwell. She was raised and educated in Manchester and Gore, Okla., and graduated from Gore High School in 1932.

Following graduation she worked at the Manchester Journal. In 1935 she attended the University of Texas in Austin. She later attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva and in 1938 moved to rural Dexter.

She taught in several rural schools, including Prairie Eagle, Highland, Glendale and Maple City, all in Kansas, and Victory School in Oklahoma.

On April 27, 1938, she married Orie Riley in Anthony, and they made their home in rural Dexter. She retired from teaching in 1950.

Riley was the Courier's Hicks Chapel-Otto correspondent for many decades.

The couple wintered in Texas from 1980 to 1993, and she tutored Hispanic children in the HOSTS program.

Riley attended Hicks Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years and was the pianist until her death. She was a member of United Methodist Women, the Order of Eastern Star and the Otto Extension Unit and was a 4-H community leader for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Orie Riley, rural Dexter; a son, Jim Riley, Dexter; two daughters, Carol Christenson, Winfield, and DeGaye Latta, Yuma, Colo.; two brothers, Roy Cromwell, Enid, Okla., and Frank Cromwell, Wakita, Okla.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Michael Bertrand

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas – Michael Eugene Bertrand, 56, of North Richland Hills, formerly of Wellington, died Dec. 8, 2002, in Richland Hills.

Services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Oxford Cemetery. The Revs. Danny Ginn and Dave Carter will officiate. Oxford Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

The Bertrand Education Fund has been established. Contributions may be made through Ridgmar Oil & Gas Co., P.O. Box 121938, Fort Worth, Texas, or Oxford Funeral Service, P.O. Box 123, Oxford, KS 67119.

Bertrand was raised in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1964. He served four years in the Navy, then attended Wichita Business College.

On Nov. 23, 1979, he married Dana Feaster in Fort Worth. They had resided in the area for most of their marriage.

Bertrand was the comptroller for Ridgmar Oil & Gas Co.

Survivors include his wife, Dana Bertrand, North Richland Hills; three sons, Michael and Travis Bertrand, both of North Richland Hills, and Trent Bertrand, Dallas; his parents, Alvin and JoAnn Bertrand, Wellington; three brothers, Tom and Randy Bertrand, both of Wellington, and Ronnie Bertrand, Topeka; and three grandchildren.

Ted Butterworth

OXFORD – Ted Butterworth, 79, lifelong resident of Oxford, died Dec. 8, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Oxford Baseball Association and the Oxford First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Butterworth was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Oxford, to Anna (Ford) and James Samuel Butterworth.

On May 18, 1941, he married Dona Heter in Wichita.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, including at Hiroshima.

A retired Boeing mechanic, he was a member of the Oxford Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dona Butterworth, Oxford; two sons, Jerry Butterworth, Wellington, and Joel Butterworth, Wetumka, Okla.; a daughter, Judy Houston, Oxford; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Hazel Spengler

Hazel C. Spengler, 81, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Dec. 8, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and Hospice Care of Kansas of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Spengler was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Winfield, to Sarah Ella (Miller) and Ed Askins. She was raised and educated in Winfield.

On May 17, 1947, she married Jack Spengler in Winfield. He died Jan. 8, 1988.

Spengler worked as a clerk at the F.W. Woolworth store for about eight years before it closed. She worked full time in the kitchen of St. John's College from 1968 to 1984 and then part time until the college closed in 1986.

She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Gladys Morgan, Junction City, and a brother, Carl Askins, Winfield.

James McCulley

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – James William “Jim” McCulley, 69, of New Braunfels, formerly of Elk County, died Dec. 8, 2002, in New Braunfels.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Longton Cemetery. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

McCulley was born Aug. 30, 1933, in Independence, to Artie Adelia (Agee) and Charles E. McCulley. He attended Oak Valley grade school and graduated from Longton High School. He later attended Corpus Christi Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In the early 1950s he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

On June 1, 1957, he married Lenore Hope Frank in Howard. McCulley was employed at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita until moving to Grand Prairie, Texas, in 1969. In Grand Prairie he worked for the LTV Co.

McCulley was employed in the Civil Service as an industrial engineer for the United States Army in Corpus Christi until being transferred to the Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas. In 1984 McCulley and his wife returned to Wichita where he continued to work for Civil Service as an industrial engineer for the Air Force.

A member of the Southern Baptist Church, he served as a pastor for 12 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lenora McCulley, New Braunfels; two sons, James W. “Bill” McCulley Jr., Kempner, Texas, and Rodney McCulley, Oxford; three brothers, Carl Ballenger and Charles McCulley, both of Wichita, and John McCulley, Springfield, Ore.; three sisters, Geraldine Hogan, West Memphis, Ark., Mary Belle Stong, Independence, and Berniece Kitterman, Yakima, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Ruth Riley

DEXTER – Services for Ruth C. Riley were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 11, 2002, in Hicks Chapel. The Rev. Bradley Fisher officiated, and Don Foltz read the scripture. Burial was in Maple City Cemetery.

Bwana Drennan was the pianist. The congregation sang “Amazing Grace” and “Joyful, Joyful.”

Honorary casket bearers were Ashley and Tami Cooley, Cassie Latta, Kendra Riley and Darin, Deborah, Deitra and Traci Wedd.

Casket bearers were Charles and Kyle Cooley, David Hardiman, Ross Latta, Jon Riley and Doyle Wedd.

A memorial has been established as an Education Scholarship Fund through the Cowley County 4-H Council and Hicks Chapel.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Carmen Hernandez

Carmen Hernandez, 79, of 202 E. Fourth, Winfield, died Dec. 11, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

The Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Sunday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 until service time.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Hernandez was born Jan. 1, 1923, in Winfield, to Nicolasa (Carrizales) and Maximino Manriquez.

On Oct. 21, 1939, she married Elias Hernandez in Fremont, Calif. He died Sept. 18, 1999.

A homemaker, she was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.

A son, Louis, and a daughter, Rose, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Hernandez, Chicago, and Louis Hernandez, Tonkawa, Okla.; two daughters, Frances Barron, Winfield, and Rachel Hernandez, Chicago; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Margaret Kirkpatrick

Margaret Opal Kirkpatrick, 89, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, died there Nov. 29, 2002.

Cremation has been effected. A memorial service is planned for a later date. Inurnment was at Union Cemetery Dec. 5.

Kirkpatrick was born Feb. 11, 1913, in Winfield, to Grace M. (McCreary) and Charles O. Veach. She graduated from Latham High School.

During World War II, she worked at Boeing. She later worked as a nurse's aide at the Basham Hospital in Eureka.

In 1960 she married W. Charles Kirkpatrick. He died in 1989.

She moved from Eureka to Winfield in 1987.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Floyd Veach, Thompson Falls, Mont., and a sister, Dorthea Roseman, Algona, Wash.
