Orville May

CEDAR VALE – Orville Leon May, 68, of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 12, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 10 a.m. to noon Monday.

May was born Jan. 18, 1934, in Winfield, to Chloe (Goodwin) and Frank May. He was raised and educated in Winfield.

On June 28, 1949, he married Sylvia Nahnsen in Churdan, Iowa. They moved to Winfield and had a daughter, Susan, who died as a child. They later divorced.

On Feb. 13, 1968, May married Wanda Lou Philpott in Catoosa, Okla. They made their home in Catoosa for many years.

May was employed by Reddy Pipe & Supply Co. for almost 30 years before he retired. His wife preceded him in death. In 1994 May moved to Winfield to live with his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Dorothy May. In 1996 he became a resident of Cedar Vale Nursing Center.

Survivors include a brother, Richard May, and a sister, Marcia Lewis, both of Winfield.

Charles Kromminga

LITTLETON, Colo. – Charles Arthur “Chuck” Kromminga Jr., 70, of Littleton, died Dec. 1, 2002, in Orange, Calif.

Services were at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lakewood, Colo. Pastor Steven Wheeler officiated. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery. Music included “In the Sweet By and By,” “How Great Thou Art” and “I Know that My Redeemer Lives.”

Casket bearers were Gregory, Steven, Kevin and Adrian Kromminga and Todd and Johnathon Burns.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Seniors Van Fund.

Kromminga was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Yankton, S.D., to Winifred and Charles Kromminga.

After graduating from Arvada (Colo.) High School, he began his career in 1949, working for Joslins in Denver. He retired in 1995 after 45 years of service. After retiring he worked part time for Automotive Avenues and the Denver Bronco Organization, both in Denver.

On June 17, 1956, he married Marilynn June Newton in Wheatridge, Colo. They made their home in Lakewood, Colo., and more recently in Littleton.

A member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Kromminga served in various volunteer positions.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynn Kromminga, Littleton; three sons, Gregory Kromminga, Fairboult, Minn., Steven Kromminga, Winfield, and Kevin Kromminga, Orange, Calif.; a daughter, Kimberly Burns, Red Wing, Minn.; a brother, Russell Kromminga, and a sister, Marilyn Russell, both of Denver; and seven grandchildren.

Hazel Spengler

Services for Hazel C. Spengler were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 13, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Mark and Becky Schotte sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Martha Brandenburg was the organist.

Casket bearers were Allen, Ronald and Wayne Askins, Randy Emerson, Doug Miller and Blaine Spengler.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and Hospice Care of Kansas.

Donald Rogers

Donald Dee Rogers passed away from complications of cancer at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield on Dec. 9, 2002.

Born to Ordess W. and Dorothy Hyde Rogers in 1927, he was raised in Augusta by his father and stepmother, Mary Alice Rogers. He attended Ponca Military Academy in Ponca City, Okla., and thereafter joined the Navy during World War II.

Following his discharge from service, he attended the University of Oklahoma where he played football, and ultimately completed his education at Wichita State University.

His employment at Cessna Aircraft led to a career in marketing in the aviation avionics industry, culminating in a position as vice president of marketing for the Telex Corp.

Rogers was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, a brother and his spouse.

He is survived by five children, Tony Rogers, Chris Rogers and Wade Rogers, all of Dallas, Teri Rogers of Kansas City and Rick Rogers of Frederick, Md. He was the proud grandfather of eight.

For those wishing to pay their respects, a memorial room will be arranged at Dunsford's Funeral Home in Augusta on Saturday, Dec. 21, between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. Interment will be limited to family.

Bob Harding

Bobby G. “Bob” Harding, 65, of Winfield, died Dec. 15, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the First Assembly of God church and the Winfield Wrestling Club. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Harding was born April 20, 1937, in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Alice Gladys (Garland) and Asa Clifton Harding. He was raised in Arkansas and Winfield and later moved to Stillwater, Okla., where he finished his schooling.

In 1955 he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Bon Homme Richard. In 1958 he was honorably discharged and returned to Winfield.

On Aug. 2, 1958, he married Frances Dill in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield where he worked for 17 years at Sheneman's as a salesman, custom meat cutter and manager.

He was then employed as a supervisor at Cessna for five years and at Morton Buildings for 10 years before he opened his own shop, Pine-N-Hearts, which specialized in handcrafted furniture and woodwork. He also served five years as a correctional officer at the Cowley County Sheriff's Department before retiring in 1999.

Harding coached youth football when his children were in school.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Harding, and two sons, Randy Harding and Steve Harding, all of Winfield; two daughters, Cindy Manske, Lawrence, and Jamie Henderson, Winfield; a brother, Kenneth Harding, Niland, Calif.; a sister, Roxy Delong, Derby; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Fanny Oliver

CEDAR VALE – Fanny Virginia Oliver, 94, of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 15, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home until 7 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Valley Manor or a charity of the donor's choice.

Oliver was born Sept. 6, 1908, near Cedar Vale, to Henrie (Pack) and Otis Dale.

On Oct. 25, 1933, she married Robinson Woodrow Oliver in Pawhuska, Okla. He died Jan. 18, 1992. A son, Charles Oliver, also preceded her in death.

A homemaker, she had been a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor's nursing and rehabilitation facility for several years and kept busy piecing quilts.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Epperson, Phoenix, and Lois Rutter, Cedar Vale; a son, Jerry Oliver, Derby; a brother, Charles Dale, Cedar Vale; a sister, Clara Bolton, Sedan; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Carmen Hernandez

A Mass of Christian burial for Carmen Hernandez was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 16, 2002, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

The Rosary was said at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated.

Gemma Palsmeier was the vocalist, and Laurabelle Haines was the organist. Music included “In the Garden,” “Amazing Grace” and “Ave Maria.”

Richie Villa was an honorary casket bearer.

Casket bearers were Sean Hernandez, Lance Hernandez, Erik Hernandez, Robert Barron Jr., Manuel Barron and Steven Barron.

Sam Waldschmidt

ARKANSAS CITY – Wade Samuel “Sam” Waldschmidt Jr., 58, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 12, 2002, east of Arkansas City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Arkansas City Youth Baseball Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Waldschmidt was born April 10, 1944, in Winfield, to Margaret D. (Menefee) and Wade Waldschmidt Sr. He was raised in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1962. He later attended Johnson County Community College.

He worked for the General Electric Jet Engine Maintenance Facility at Strother Field for several years before serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo.

On Oct. 5, 1976, Waldschmidt married Sandra Woodard in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Arkansas City and Dexter. He worked as a supervisor for Cessna Aircraft Co.'s paint shop for 15 years and was most recently a security guard at Southwestern College.

He was a member of the Studebaker Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Waldschmidt; a brother, David Waldschmidt; and two sisters, Anna Jane Cherney, Wichita, and Camile Pond, Arkansas City.

Charles Branson

Charles L. Branson, 80, of 1604 Country Club Road, Winfield, died Dec. 17, 2002, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Military committal services will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart & Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Branson was born Feb. 28, 1922, in rural Nash, Okla., to Beatrice (Hatch) and Charles L. Branson. He was raised in Amorita, Okla., and graduated from Amorita High School in 1941.

Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 96th Infantry in the Philippines. After being discharged in 1946, he moved to Dexter and began farming with his family.

On May 6, 1949, he married Wilma Cole in Winfield. They made their home in Dexter where he continued to farm until 1963. They then moved to Winfield, and Branson began working for the Kansas Department of Transportation as a mechanic shop foreman. He retired in 1986 after 23 years of service.

Branson attended the First Church of the Nazarene and was a member of American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Branson, Winfield; a son, Terry Branson, Round Rock, Texas; a daughter, Marcia Elam, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Bill Branson, Vinita, Okla.; three sisters, Maxine Frazier, Thelma Stoabs and Emogene Branson, all of Winfield; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.
