Irvin Patton

CALDWELL – Irvin Patton, 73, of Caldwell, died Dec. 23, 2002, in Caldwell.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Central Christian Church. The Rev. John-Park Winkler will officiate. Burial will be in Caldwell City Cemetery.

Patton was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Caldwell, to Mary (Dillon) and Earl Patton.

He was an oil field worker and a farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Barry Patton and Bart Patton, both of Winfield; a brother, Doyle Patton, Clearwater; a sister, Doris Booth, Wellington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Charles Kowing

LIBERAL – Charles E. “Chuck” Kowing, 74, of Liberal, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 25, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Services were at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal. The Rev. Ken Hathaway officiated.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kowing was born June 27, 1928, in Winfield, to Thelma (Lowe) and Cleo Kowing. He was raised and educated in Winfield.

During World War II he served in the Marines.

On June 19, 1949, he married Juanita Atkinson in Winfield.

A resident of Liberal for 44 years, Kowing retired in 1992 as a truck driver with Yellow Freight.

Kowing was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge Fargo 300, Scottish Rite, Southwest Shrine Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Lane Day Post 3166 and Teamsters Union Local 795. He was a former member of Elks Lodge 1947.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Kowing, Liberal; three sons, Greg Kowing and Douglas Kowing, both of Dumas, Texas, and David Kowing, Arvada, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.

Jack Flagler

MULVANE – Jack Flagler, 83, of Mulvane, died Dec. 25, 2002, at the Veterans Administration hospital in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday ?n the Senter-Smith Mortuary chapel. Burial will be in Mulvane Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Flagler was born July 5, 1919, in Oklahoma City, to Anna (Arnholz) and Walter L. Flagler.

On March 27, 1947, he married Mary M. Wentworth in Wichita.

A U.S. Army veteran, Flagler was a truck driver and leather worker.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Flagler, Mulvane; his children, Tuffy Flagler, Cambridge, Kay Shilts, Belle Plaine, Debra Lawing, Chico, Calif., and Rebecca Holton and Jody Flagler, both of Mulvane; a brother, Louis Flagler, Wichita; four sisters, Alice Rickel, Mulvane, Ella Gray, Wichita, and Mildred Herrmann and Susie Lawson, both of Sapulpa, Okla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Vida Baughman

HOWARD – Vida Grace Baughman, 99, longtime resident of Howard, died Dec. 25, 2002, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Revs. Julie Shields and Gary Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Longton Senior Center. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Baughman was born Jan. 27, 1903, on a farm in Elk County, to Nina (Flanders) and William Jay. She attended rural school in the Elk County area.

On Sept. 30, 1923, she shared a double wedding with her twin sister, Vera, and married James Howard Baughman at Howard. A homemaker, she operated a farm in Elk County with her husband until moving to Wichita in 1957.

In 1968, they retired and returned to make their home in the Howard community. Her husband died Jan. 1, 1995.

Baughman was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Melba Smith, Longton; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Edward Howe

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Edward William “Ted” Howe, 93, of Broomfield, died Dec. 21, 2002, in Lafayette, Colo.

Services will be at 10 30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Howe was born Nov. 20, 1909, north of Cambridge, to Mary Eunice (Bonnel) and Burt L. Howe. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1929.

On Feb. 24, 1938, he married Dottie Morrow in Newkirk, Okla. He farmed in the Cambridge and Burden areas and later moved to Mulvane and was employed at Boeing. Following his retirement he and his wife moved to Colorado to be near their son.

He was a member of the Northwest Church of Christ in Westminster, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie Howe, Broomfield, Colo.; a son, Marvin L. Howe, Federal Heights, Colo.; a sister: C. Marie Howe, Winfield; three grandsons, five great-grandchildren and a number of stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.

Edward Bever

Services for Edward E. Bever were held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Swisher-Taylor & Morris chapel. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Floral Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace” and “Sing Me into Heaven.”

Casket bearers were Roy Smith, Larry Kelley, Alfred Barnes, Max McCrea, Norman McCrea, Donald Atwood, William McNiff and Richard McCrea.

A memorial has been established with William Newton Hospital.

Wayne Duncan

Services for Wayne W. Duncan were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 27, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Casket bearers were Duncan's grandsons, Michael, Rob and Ron Duncan, Kevin and Brian Jordan and Drew and Neil Yellen.

Ray Ankrom

Services for Ray Eugene Ankrom were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 27, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ryan Carpenter officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Tammy Carpenter sang “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military graveside services, and the Burden lodge of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed Masonic services.

Honorary casket bearers were Beecher and Herb Brunton; Jerry Goff; Barney, Bob and Jim Lundy; Jordan and Logan Mays; Fred Meek and Randall Watt.

Casket bearers were Arthur Dale, Erik, Hal and Robert Ankrom; Dusty Dinkins; Kim Goff; Johnny Mays; Steve Otto and Kyle Womacks.

A memorial has been established as an athletic scholarship fund through Commercial Federal Bank.

Donald Cook

ARKANSAS CITY – Donald R. Cook, 71, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 25, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home chapel. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cook was born July 3, 1931, at Sedan, to Bertha (Metheny) and James Cook. He attended schools in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1951. After high school he joined the Air Force and returned home in 1960.

On Dec. 20, 1969, he married Bernice Lloyd in Newkirk, Okla., and they made their home in Arkansas City.

Cook worked for the City of Arkansas City, first as a sanitation worker and then as a foreman.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and also a member of the Moose Lodge.

Cook was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy (Neal) Cook; and three brothers, Harold Cook, Everette Cook and Ralph Cook.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Cook, Arkansas City; a daughter, Theresa Frazee, Burkville, Texas; three brothers, Ocie Cook, Winfield, John L. Cook, Arkansas City, and Kenneth Cook, Independence; a sister, Lucille Hull, Arkansas City; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas Oliver

ARKANSAS CITY – Thomas W. “Tommy” Oliver, 74, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 24, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Oliver was born Oct. 5, 1928, in Arkansas City, to Lucy (Bowyer) and Dee Oliver. He grew up in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1946.

Right after high school he joined the Army and served in the Korean War.

On Nov. 12, 1948, he married Nita Careathers in Arkansas City. They made their home in several locations, including Germany, New Jersey, Texas, Georgia and Alabama, before settling in Arkansas City in 1969.

Oliver was an instructor for the Civil Service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Spencer Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254, Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18, the Arkansas City Historical Society, the Optimist Club and the Gideons.

Oliver was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Kerry Oliver, and a brother, Darrell Oliver.

Survivors include a daughter, Nita Oliver, Birmingham, Ala.; his stepmother, Nellie Gragert, Arkansas City; a brother, Walter Oliver, Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Betty Oliver Howe, Las Cruces, N.M.; two cousins, Irma Wagoner and Lois McKee, both of Wichita; and many nieces and nephews.
