Edward Howe

BROOMFIELD, Colo. – Edward William “Ted” Howe, 93, of Broomfield, died Dec. 21, 2002, in Lafayette, Colo.

Services will be at 10 30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Howe was born Nov. 20, 1909, north of Cambridge, to Mary Eunice (Bonnel) and Burt L. Howe. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1929.

On Feb. 24, 1938, he married Dottie Morrow in Newkirk, Okla. He farmed in the Cambridge and Burden areas and later moved to Mulvane and was employed at Boeing. Following his retirement he and his wife moved to Colorado to be near their son.

He was a member of the Northwest Church of Christ in Westminster, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie Howe, Broomfield, Colo.; a son, Marvin L. Howe, Federal Heights, Colo.; a sister: C. Marie Hamlin, Winfield; three grandsons, five great-grandchildren and a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Ileen Lytle

ANTHONY – V. Ileen Lytle, 78, of Anthony, died Dec. 27, 2002, in Wichita.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary in Anthony. Chaplain Paul Gilstrap will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

Lytle was born Sept. 27, 1924, in Anthony, to Ada Lee (Law) and George Walter Nichols.

On April 26, 1952, she married E.C. “Ike” Lytle in Raton, N.M. He died in 1992.

A waitress and hostess, she was a member of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Anthony.

Survivors include four sons, John Yeary, Beloit, Jerry Yeary, Winfield, Robert “Bob” Lytle, Hutchinson, and Eldon “Smokey” Lytle, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Debbie Battenberg, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Hollis “Buss” Nichols, Wichita; a sister, Dorotha Downing, Anthony; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Goldena Troutman

LONGTON – Goldena Edna Troutman, 84, formerly of Longton, died Dec. 27, 2002, at Elk Manor in Moline.

Services were at 1 p.m. today at the Longton United Methodist Church. The Rev. George Riley and Pastor Robin Haines officiated. Burial was in Altoona Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Troutman was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Upola, to Elsie Rosena Elizabeth (Schreiber) and William Lester Fields. She attended school in the Lafontaine and Fredonia area.

On March 23, 1937, she married Corbet Luther Troutman in Fredonia. They made their home briefly in Wilson County before moving to Upola and later settling in Longton. In 1954 they opened Troutman Grocery, which they operated for 27 years. They also ran an auction business. Her husband died Jan. 15, 2000.

Troutman was a past worthy matron of Ladonia Chapter 243 Order of Eastern Star of Elk Falls and a longtime member of the Longton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Bill Troutman, Oklahoma City, and a sister-in-law, Betty Ryals, Moline.

Hazel Tolliver

MORNING VIEW, Ky. – Hazel F. Meeks Tolliver, 64, formerly of Burden, died Dec. 27, 2002, at her home in Morning View.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time.

Survivors include a son, James “Jim” Tolliver, Newport, Ky.; two daughters, Juanita Lavonne Tolliver, Morning View, and Beverly Sanders, Alexandria, Ky.; two brothers, Harold Meeks, Prairie Grove, Ark., and Howard Meeks, Oklahoma; six sisters, Sylvia Kimberland, Pearl Shelton, Pauline Lee and Karen Bunch, all of Wichita, Louise Knight, Beaumont, Texas, and Eunice Scouten, Oklahoma; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Grace Keeton

Grace A. Keeton, 98, a resident of Winfield Rest Haven, died there Dec. 27, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may sign a register at Miles Funeral Service Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Keeton was born June 1, 1904, in Allison, to Carrie Isabelle (Mates) and Frank Pierce Phipps. She was raised in Valley Center and graduated from Valley Center High School in 1922. Following graduation, she worked at a grocery store in Valley Center.

On Nov. 28, 1929, she married Calvin B. Keeton in Newton. They moved to Winfield in 1947, and she worked for the Selective Service for a few years. In the early 1950s, she began working in the cafeteria at Winfield High School and also a bakery.

Her husband died Dec. 1, 1983.

Keeton was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Calvin B. Keeton Jr., Wichita; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jacque Metz

OXFORD – Jacque Elizabeth Metz, 81, of Oxford, died Dec. 28, 2002, at the home of her son in Edmond, Okla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oxford Funeral Service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mission Hospice, 7301 Broadway, Suite 210, Oklahoma City, OK 73116. They may also be made through the funeral home.

Metz was born May 18, 1921, in rural Billings, Okla., to Ruble and Ray Lemmon. She grew up in Oxford.

On July 22, 1939, she married Vernon L. Metz in Wellington. He died in 1998.

A homemaker, from March 1942 to June 1943 she also worked on B-17s and B-29s at the Boeing plant in Wichita.

She volunteered much of her time, mostly in Buffalo, Wyo., where she lived for over 30 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Kelle, Oakville, Wash.; a son, Richard, Edmond, Okla.; two sisters, Peggy Hoop, Oxford, and Pat Lemmon, Hutchinson; a brother, Dean Lemmon, Orlando, Fla.; five grandsons, two great-grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren.

Sam Keller

Sylvester H. “Sam” Keller, 95, of 1319 John, Winfield, died Dec. 28, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Keller was born March 23, 1907, on a farm near Halstead, to Anna Augusta (Nolting) and William J. Keller. He received his early education in the Riverside, Mount Pleasant and West Emma rural schools and graduated from Halstead High School in 1925. He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering in 1933.

Keller was employed in government projects in Kansas for a year before joining the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in 1934. He served SCS as an engineer in Mankato, Lebanon, Cawker City and Burr Oak.

On Dec. 15, 1935, he married Agnes Weyant in Abilene. They later moved to Oklahoma where he served as an SCS engineer in Duncan, Konawa, Ada and Chickasha.

In 1946 they moved to Winfield where he began working as the district conservationist for the Cowley County Soil Conservation District, the Timber Creek Watershed project and the Winfield lake project. He retired in 1972.

In 1992 Keller received an award from the Soil & Water Conservation Service for his 18-year development of the publication “Native Grass Finder,” which is now used in counties in the bluestem prairie regions of Kansas and Oklahoma.

A longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, Keller attended the Methodist Seekers and Mizpah classes. He was affiliated with the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, the Winfield Senior Advisory Board and the Society of Soil & Water Conservationists. He was also a member of the Association of Retired SCS Employees and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a longtime volunteer and served as president of Winfield Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Keller, Winfield; two sons, Clayton W. Keller, Overland Park, and Warren D. Keller, Berkeley, Calif.; two daughters, Judy Keller Hatteberg, Wichita, and Carole Keller Cranston, Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia Yeast, Peoria, Ariz., and Helen Keller, Newton; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Georgene Smith

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Georgene Waite Smith, 80, of Huntsville, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 21, 2002.

In following her final request, she was cremated and her ashes were scattered at sea.

Smith was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Winfield, to Edna and George Waite. In 1941 she graduated from Winfield High School where she had been a cheerleader and active in music.

While attending Southwestern College she met and married James Smith.

She is survived by a son, Matthew Smith, New York City, and a granddaughter, Julie Regehr, Eastlake, Colo.

Fran Broadhurst

The Rev. Frances Neill “Fran” Broadhurst, 82, of Winfield, died Dec. 29, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery South in Kansas City, Mo. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cambridge Presbyterian Church or to an organization of the donor's choice.

Broadhurst was born March 27, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., the only child of Radah (Carbaugh) and Thomas F. Broadhurst. She graduated from Parkville (Mo.) High School in 1938, earned a bachelor of arts degree from Park College in Kansas City in 1942, a master of arts degree in Christian education from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1953, and a master's degree in counseling from the University of Kansas in 1968. She was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1981.

Most of her professional life was spent in Kansas. After graduating from college, she spent several years in the family's grocery and general merchandise business and taught high school students.

With her seminary training and the counseling degree, she served as a Christian educator in two congregations and as a teacher and administrator at both the College of Emporia and Southwestern College. She also spent some time doing campus ministry at Western New Mexico University in Silver City.

Until her retirement she served as pastor and then co-pastor of the Cambridge Presbyterian Church. As a member of the Presbytery of Southern Kansas, she served on three committees: administration, community outreach and sexual misconduct.

In Winfield Broadhurst was a founding member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Task Force, a member of the board of Families Actively Communicating Together and a volunteer in the public schools. She also served on the Social Outreach Service board of the Sunflower Parish of the United Methodist Church and Cambridge Presbyterian Church in eastern Cowley County.

Broadhurst received the Park College Distinguished Alumna Award, the Award for Dedication to Students from the Jewish Student Association at the College of Emporia; and – the first administrator to receive the award – the Award for Dedication to Students given by the Student Government Association at Southwestern College.

She received a Danforth Foundation fellowship for “the Study of Women in Campus Ministry” and is listed in the 1975 “Who's Who Among American Women.”

She is survived by many close friends and “adopted” children and grandchildren.

Faith Phillips

Faith S. Phillips, 100, of St. Louis, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 29, 2002, at her daughter's home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time.

Phillips was born Feb. 6, 1902, in Axtell, to Euphemia (Watson) and Dr. William Strayer. She received a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University and a master's degree from the University of Chicago and was a member of Phi Mu sorority.

She was an extension specialist in child development and parent education at Oklahoma State University and traveled in five states. Invited to the White House by President Herbert Hoover, she attended the First White House Conference on Parenting and Childhood Education in 1929. She also served as a national chairwoman of the Department of Child Development and Parental Education of the American Home Economics Association.

On March 11, 1937, she married Wendell E. Phillips in Tulsa, Okla. They lived in Winfield where they were members of the First United Methodist Church.

Phillips was a member of P.E.O. and a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include a son, Howard W. Phillips, Conway, Mo.; a daughter, Pamela Bartels, St. Louis; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Harvey Kearns

Harvey Thomas Kearns, 77, of 10223 141st Road, Winfield, died Dec. 28, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors between 7 and 8:30.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Kearns was born Jan. 3, 1925, near Tisdale, to Osie (Brooks) and Raymond Kearns. He was raised and educated in Tisdale and later moved to Winfield where he attended high school. As a young man, he worked in the fur business with Roy Kadau.

A veteran of World War II, Kearns entered the U.S. Marine Corps on July 13, 1944, and was stationed in the Okinawa Islands. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1946.

On June 30, 1946, he married Dorothy Audry Peters in Hutchinson.

Kearns farmed and worked in the oil fields. He worked for Hittle Service Co. from the late 1940s until the early 1950s when he began working for Richardson Brothers.

In 1965 he began employment with Sweetland Hinson, setting up machinery and driving trucks delivering farm implements. He retired in 1982 following 17 years of service.

Kearns attended Tisdale United Methodist Church and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544. He served on the Salem Township board for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Kearns, and a daughter, Beverly Kearns, both of Winfield; a son, Tommy Kearns, Coppell, Texas; three brothers, Donald Kearns, Robert Kearns and Richard Kearns, all of Winfield; and two grandchildren.

Edward Howe

Services for Edward William “Ted” Howe were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 31, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Clint Brown officiated. Inurnment was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included “Precious Memories” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Ernest Gropper

WINDOM, Minn. – Ernest “Ernie” Gropper, 108, of Windom, formerly of Heron Lake, Minn., died Dec. 29, 2002, at Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Sogge Good Samaritan Chapel. The Rev. Kathleen Brandt will officiate. Burial will be in Jeffers Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel an hour before the service.

Anderson-Schmidt-LaCanne Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Mary Brewer and Cindy Huckvale, both of Winfield, and a grandson, Jim Gropper, Burleson, Texas.

Pearl Slagle

Pearl R. Slagle, 90, of Winfield, died Dec. 30, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with Good Samaritan Village, the American Cancer Society and Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Slagle was born April 29, 1912, on a farm southeast of Winfield, to Rebecca Jane (Miller) and Thomas Jasper Brooks. She was raised and educated in Winfield. As a young woman, she worked at the Cowley County Farm and Hospital.

On July 31, 1932, she married William Dewey Slagle in Oklahoma City. They made their home in Winfield. After her children were raised, she worked as a dietary aide at William Newton Hospital. In 1952 she began working at Binney & Smith and remained there until she retired in 1977.

Slagle was a member of the First Baptist Church but attended Tisdale United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Binney & Smith's 25-Year Club and the Dirty Dozen Club and a former member of the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Melvin Slagle, and an infant son and daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Joann Shipp, Winfield; a brother, Earl Brooks, Napa, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Lydia Parkerson

Lydia P. Parkerson, 99, longtime resident of Cowley County, died Jan. 1, 2003, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.

A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Parkerson was born Aug. 3, 1903, in Omaha, Neb., to Augusta (Kamforska) and Joseph Schima. When she was three, the family moved to Prague, Okla. She was educated in Oklahoma schools.

On Feb. 12, 1920, she married Wesley L. Parkerson in Prague. They spent several years in Prague and Anthony. In 1939 they moved to a farm at Wilmot where they farmed until retiring in 1960. In 1962 they moved to Winfield.

Her husband died Dec. 19, 1975. For the past seven years, she had lived at Good Samaritan Village.

Parkerson had been a member of the former Wilmot Christian Church and later became a member of First Christian Church.

A son, Wesley L. Parkerson Jr., died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Louise Cordell, Winfield; a half-sister, Lenora Harrold, Tahlequah, Okla.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Cleo Thompson

WICHITA – Cleo Violet Thompson, 89, formerly of Belle Plaine and Haysville, died Dec. 31, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor in Wichita.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Webb Mortuary in Clearwater. The Rev. Randy Mashburn will officiate. Burial will be in Ninnescah Cemetery at Udall.

A memorial has been established with Presbyterian Manor, 4700 W. 13th North,Wichita, KS 67212.

Thompson was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Douglass, to Nellie Pearl (Parkins) and Bert Pegg.

She married Lee Francis Thompson who died Aug. 27, 1998.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Haysville.

Surviving nieces and nephews include Don Parkins, Mulvane, and Dean Pegg, Haysville.
