Luella Ratliff
(Feb. 5, 1938 - Nov. 25, 2000)

Luella Ratliff, 62, Westphalia, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.
Known as "Lou", she was born Feb. 5, 1938, in Ottawa, the daughter of Cleo L. and Naomi Anderson Wood. She completed her high school education and married Gail Ratliff May 5, 1956, in Scott Valley. She spent more than 50 years in the Westphalia vicinity and was a homemaker.
Amont those preceding her in death was her father, who died in 1992.
Survivors include her husband, Gail Ratliff of Westphalia; a son, David Ratliff of Westphalia; three daughters, Teri Campbell of Fort Scott, Julie Willard and Tracy Brown, both of Westphalia; her mother of Garnett; two brothers, Chester Wood of Omaha, Neb., and Chuck Wood of Westphalia; two sisters, Jo Cushing of Kincaid and Mary Cahoone of Cottonwood Falls; and 14 grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

Charlotte Emily Weaver
(July 10, 1914 - Nov. 25, 2000)

Charlotte Emily Weaver, 86, La Cygne, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Oak Haven Nursing Facility in Richmond.
She was born July 10, 1914, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Harry G. and Carolyn Evers Miller. She and Harry Weaver were married Feb. 6, 1937, in Galesburg, Ill., and they became the parents of three children.
They lived in Dodge City from 1949 until moving to Kansas City, Kan., in 1953. She worked for Helzberg Diamonds and The Jones Store for 15 years before retiring in 1977.
She and her husband moved to the rural Parker and La Cygne area in 1979.
Mrs. Weaver was an avid reader and accumulated a large library of novels. She served on the La Cygne Library Board for about two years.
Her hobbies included sewing for her daughters, growing flowers and feeding and watching birds.
Her memberships included Parker Chapter No. 307 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Fort Madison, Iowa.
Those preceding her in death were her husband, Harry Weaver, who died Jan. 12, 1991; a brother, Carl Miller; and an infant sister.
Survivors include her two daughters, Linda Polley of Parker and Nancy Reed of La Cygne; a son, William Weaver of Colorado; five grandchildren; and five great-grandsons.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Mangold Funeral Home in La Cygne, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, also in La Cygne.
n Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children.

Maurice J. Peine
(Jan. 23, 1907 - Nov. 25, 2000)

Maurice J. Peine, 93, Garnett, a longtime resident of Greeley, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.
The son of Joseph and Anna K. Bowman Peine, he was born Jan. 23, 1907, in Greeley. He spent most of his life in Greeley before moving to Garnett 24 years ago. He was a farmer and stockman before retiring.
Mr. Peine and Marie Evelyn Otten were married Sept. 3, 1935, in Greeley. She preceded in him death.
He was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett. He had served on the boards of the Greeley Cooperative Association and the Greeley schools and on the St. John's Catholic Church of Greeley committee.
Survivors include two sons, Joe Peine and Tom Peine, both of Greeley; four daughters, Marjorie Clovis of Lawrence, Roberta Thomas of Tucson, Ariz., Patty Owings of Wellsville and Judy Brock of Lenexa; two sisters, Hilda Walker of Kansas City, Mo., and Harriett Kirkpatrick of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Greeley.

Marion Lyle Garst
(Died March 27, 2001)

Marion Lyle Garst, 81, Tellico Plains, Tenn., died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Sweetwater Hospital in Sweetwater, Tenn.
Mr. Garst retired from Moorman Manufacturing Co. and was a veteran of World War II.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Garst, of Tellico Plains; two sons, Richard Garst of Plackard, Ala., and Dale Garst of Tellico Plains; two daughters, Patricia Stauffer of Tellico Plains and Frances Richardson of Jonesboro, Ark.; five brothers, Mack Staley of LaJunta, Colo., John Garst of Travelers Rest, S.C., Paul Daggett of San Diego, Calif., Donnie Daggett of Osawatomie and Clovis Daggett of Belen, N.M.; a sister, Esther Sharks of Rhinelander, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were held Sunday in Trading Post Cemetery in Trading Post, Kan. Services were under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton.

Fred F. Prothe
(April 19, 1918 - March 28, 2001)

Fred F. Prothe, 82, Urbana, Mo., a Miami County native, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo.
He was the youngest of the 10 children of John and Dora Rodewald Prothe and was born April 19, 1918, near Fontana. He graduated from Block Grade School in rural Paola.
He and Hazel Holtz were married Nov. 1, 1941, in Block. They made their home in Fontana until moving to Urbana a year ago.
Mr. Prothe was a retired farm and had served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Block.
Mr. Prothe enjoyed playing cards and visiting.
Nine brothers and sisters were among those preceding him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Prothe of the home; two sons, Gary Prothe of Urbana, formerly of Paola, and John Prothe of Emporia; two daughters, Mary Ann Green of Cleveland, Mo., and Vera Drotleff of Jackson, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in the church. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home of Wheatland, Mo.
Memorials may be made in his name to the church.

Melva A. Thomas
(Feb. 16, 1916 - April 1, 2001)

Melva A. Thomas, 85, well-known resident of Drexel, Mo., and former publisher of The Drexel Star, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, in Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville, Mo.
She was born in Sacramento, Calif., Feb. 16, 1916, the daughter of Edwin Larkin and Mary Adeline White Tobin. She was the oldest of five children and the only daughter. Her family moved to the Kansas City/Independence, Mo., area when she was a young girl. She grew up in the northeast section of Kansas City and graduated from Northeast High School in 1934.
While in high school, she met Clyde W. Thomas, and they were married Nov. 27, 1935, in Independence. The couple continued to live in Independence until the family moved to Drexel in 1954 to take over the nearly defunct newspaper
Under their guidance through the rest of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the paper doubled in size and circulation. The newspaper was known as a driving force in the growth of that period in Drexel. Mrs. Thomas primarily served as the business manager of the newspaper, but was integral in all parts of the production.
Illness in 1979 led Mrs. Thomas and her husband to retire and sell the newspaper to their son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Trudy Thomas. During their retirement, they traveled extensively until her husband's death in 1988. Mrs. Thomas continued to live in Drexel until July 2000, when she moved to Crown Care Center in Harrisonville, Mo.
In addition to the operation of The Drexel Star, Mrs. Thomas was a part of many activities in Drexel, including the Parent-Teacher Association, Lions Club Auxiliary, Baptist Church Women's Circle and other civic and community projects. She also was a charter member of the Cass Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary and a longtime member of the Cass County Democratic Central Committee.
While living in Independence, her husband was a typesetter for the Inter-City News, and she worked for Montgomery Ward's main store at Belmont and St. John streets.
They were active members of the Maywood Baptist Church in Independence. After moving to Drexel, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Drexel.
Others preceding her in death were three brothers, Clyde Richard Tobin, who was reported missing in fighting in the South Pacific during World War II; Isaac Tobin, who died in 1990; and Raymond Edwin Tobin, who died in 1995.
Surviving are her two daughters, Mary Kathleen Wise of Freeman, Mo., and Sherrill Loraine Stalnaker of Lubbock, Texas; a son, William Patrick Thomas of Drexel; a brother, Jack O'Leary Tobin of Independence; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandsons; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Runyan Chapel in Drexel. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery near Drexel.
Memorials may be made to the Cass Medical Center Foundation in her name, or Drexel Senior Meals in care of Barara Taylor.
