Jesse Hampton
(July 16, 1911 - March 28, 2001)

Jesse Hampton, 89, Iola, former resident of the Parker community, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Allen County Hospital in Iola.
The son of Melville R. and Sarah J. Sullivant Hampton, he was born July 6, 1911, in Goodrich, Kan. He grew up in the Goodrich and Parker area.
He and Vera King were married March 28, 1934, in Paola. They made their home in the Parker community until moving to Iola in 1947.
He worked for Great Lakes Pipeline Co. and then its successor, Williams Brothers Pipeline Co., until his retirement. He began as a backhoe operator and then became a pipeline inspector and engineer.
Mr. Hampton, known as "Lee," also had a lifelong interest in farming and raising beef cattle.
Those preceding him in death included his wife, Vera Hampton, who died July 31, 1997; two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include a son, Robert Hampton of the home and two brothers, Robert E. Hampton and Olen Hampton, both of La Cygne.
Services were Saturday in Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola. Burial was in Goodrich Cemetery.

William Foxx
(Aug. 7, 1925 - March 29, 2001)

William Foxx, 75, Garnett, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Aug. 7, 1925, in Peru, Kan., a son of Harry N. and Myra Amanda Smith Foxx. He lived in the Garnett area most of his life and was a 1943 graduate of Garnett High School.
He was self-employed as a farmer, floor finisher and carpenter. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for several years.
Mr. Foxx served with the U.S. Army in the 82nd Paratrooper Division during World War II.
He had served as commander of American Legion Post No. 48 and managed the American Legion baseball team for five years.
He and Georgetta Browning were married Sept. 16, 1944, in Mound City. She survives, of the home.
Those preceding him in death included eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald R. Foxx of Breckenridge, Colo., and Bryan Foxx of Fort Scott, Kan.; a daughter, Donna Kimmell of Le Roy, Kan.; a foster daughter, Betty Smith of Munford, Ala.; a sister, Velva Mackey of Bartlesville, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
Services were Monday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Funeral Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Garnett Senior Citizens Center.

Mary Etta Horst
(Oct. 18, 1916 - May 23, 2001)

Mary Etta Horst, 84, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in her Shawnee home.
She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Garnett, the daughter of Diannah Elizabeth Karns Halstead and William Henry Halstead II. She attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Okla.
She had lived in the Kansas City area more than 60 years and was an officer at the University of Kansas Medical Center before going to work for Penn Central Oil Co. She retired in 1980 with 30 years of service at Central Oil.
She and Clarence L. Horst were married Jan. 17, 1935, in Liberty, Mo.
Her memberships included the First Baptist Church of Shawnee and American Business Women's Association. She liked to travel.
Those preceding her in death included three sisters and five brothers.
Survivors include a son, Clarence Dean Horst of Spring Hill; a daughter, Shirley Jean Horst Walker of Poway, Calif.; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday in the church and Tuesday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

John LeRoy Tinsley
(July 4, 1926 - May 22, 2001)

John LeRoy Tinsley, 75, formerly of Olathe, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in his home in Parker.
He was born July 4, 1926, in Lenexa and his parents were Robert and Myrtle Venable Tinsley.
He and Bertha Kitchell were married June 21, 1950. They lived in Olathe for 14 years before moving to Parker 12 years ago.
Mr. Tinsley was employed by Reno Construction for 40 years before retiring in 1988. After moving to Parker he worked for the City of Parker as water and street superintendent for five years. He received the outstanding citizen award of Parker in 1996.
He had been a member of Local Union No. 101 since 1954.
Those preceding him in death included two daughters, Connie Tinsley and Teresa Tinsley; four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha Tinsley of the home; five daughters, Ida Shue, Beverly Freeman, Myrtle Douglas, Kathrine Bresee and Donna Tinsley, all of Parker; two sisters, Barbara Stevinin of Platte City, Mo., and Roberta Kitchell of La Cygne; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in W.L. Frye and Son Funeral Home in Olathe. Burial was in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens.

Robert Glen Wilson
(Oct. 7, 1916 - May 21, 2001)

Robert Glen Wilson, 84, Osawatomie, died May 21, 2001, in Delmar Gardens in Lenexa.
Known as "Bob", he was born Oct. 7, 1916, in Kansas City, Kan. His parents were Ralph and Irene Kern Wilson. He grew up in Osawatomie where he attended local schools.
He and Georgia M. Stanton were married May 2, 1935, in Ottawa. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children. She preceded him in death Nov. 9, 1998.
His career with the Missouri Pacific Railroad began in the early 1940s and he retired as an engineer in 1976.
His memberships included the First Presbyterian Church, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 921, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and Lions Club, all of Osawatomie, and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
In addition to his wife, those preceding him in death were five sisters who died in infancy; a half brother; and one grandchild.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Wilson of Lenexa and Ralph L. Wilson of Sterling, Kan.; a daughter, Linda K. Lockey of Independence, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Wilson, Jack Wilson, David Wilson, Scott Beumer, Paul Beumer and Matt Beumer. Honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Wilson and Rebecca Wilson.
Memorials are to Crossroads Hospice, 12815 W. 87th Parkway, Lenexa, KS 66215.

Ferrol L. Baxter
(July 3, 1913 - May 23, 2001)

Ferrol L. Baxter, 87, Overland Park, a longtime resident of Lane, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Windsor Court Assisted Living Center in Overland Park. He had lived at Windsor Court for the past year.
He was born July 3, 1913, in Pomona, Kan., the son of John and Lula Karnes Baxter. He began his education in Boyd rural school near Pomona and later moved with his family to Lane. He was a 1931 graduate of Lane High School.
He and Creta Lee Bump were married Feb. 15, 1936, in Santa Anna, Calif. She preceded him in death Oct. 18, 2000.
The Baxters resided in Compton, Calif., for 10 years after their marriage where he worked as a truck driver for Helms Bakery and later worked at the Nixon Grocery Store. After moving back to Lane in 1946 he worked as a milk hauler for Bennett's Creamery in Ottawa for many years. He then operated a road maintainer for Franklin County for 10 years before retiring in the early 1980s.
His hobbies included fishing the area rivers for flathead catfish and gardening. He was an avid hunter in his younger days. He enjoyed the outdoors.
In addition to his wife, those preceding him in death were a son, Jackie Baxter; a daughter, Nancy Baxter; and three brothers, Jack Baxter, Kenneth Baxter and Max Baxter.
Survivors include three daughters, Candace Humerickhouse and Susan Hiett, both of Olathe, and Patricia Manes of Spring Hill; a brother, Merlin Baxter of Sun City, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Lane Cemetery with Pastor Dennis M. Baxter officiating.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Myasthenia Gravis Association in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.
