Meribeth Louise Tatum
(July 20, 1916 - May 22, 20011)

Meribeth Louise Tatum, 84, Colony, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Allen County Hospital in Iola.
She was born July 20, 1916, in Gas City, Kan., the daughter of J.J. and Eva L. Casey Applegate.
She worked for North American Aircraft during World War II. A nurse practitioner, she then worked for Drs. Ryan and Ryan in an ear, nose and throat practice in Kansas City from 1945 until 1980. Colony had been her home for the past 18 years.
She and I.A. Tatum were married Dec. 31, 1945, in Kansas City. He preceded her in death.
She attended a Methodist church while living in Kansas City. She was a member of the Wyandotte County Eagles Auxiliary No. 87 for 20 years.
Survivors include a stepson, Dennis Tatum of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were Friday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Colony. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

Helen E. Mattingly
(Jan. 2, 1910 - May 22, 2001)

Helen E. Mattingly, 91, Le Roy, Kan., a former Osawatomie resident and Le Roy funeral director, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, while visiting in Jacksonville, Fla.
She was born Jan. 2, 1910, in Kirksville, Mo., the daughter of Dr. Thomas E. and Goldina Haas Hastings. She grew up in Monett, Mo., where she received her education and was a 1928 high school graduate.
She attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Mo., for a year before moving with her family to Osawatomie.
She and Don E. Mattingly of Osawatomie were married Dec. 29, 1935. They moved to Le Roy in 1939 and together they operated Mattingly Funeral Home until his death in 1990. Mrs. Mattingly continued to operate the funeral home until her death. She was the oldest active funeral director in Kansas.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Le Roy where she was a teacher in the Sunday School. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and many different civic organizations in Le Roy.
Two brothers and two sisters were among those preceding her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. L.L. Mattingly of Orange Park, Fla., and Ned Mattingly of Winfield, Kan.; a daughter, Karen Nichols of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Betty Vohs of Denver; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Mattingly Funeral Home. Burial was in Logue Cemetery east of Le Roy. Arrangements were under the direction of Swisher-Taylor and Morris Funeral Home of Winfield.
Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospitals or St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., in care of the funeral home, 803 Loomis, Winfield, KS 67156.

Daniel Warren Chaline
(May 25, 1962 - May 22, 2001)

Daniel Warren Chaline, 38, Osawatomie, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 169 north of Paola.
He was born May 25, 1962, in Houston, Texas, the son of Robert Elton and Billie Pearl McAlpine Chaline. He had moved to Osawatomie in March.
He had also lived in Tonganoxie, Kansas City, Kan., and Clearwater Beach, Fla.
He was a 1979 graduate of Big Bend Community College in Washington, D.C., and a 1996 graduate of Johnson County Community College School of Nursing.
He was employed as a forklift operator by Kansas City Cold Storage in Bonner Springs.
He served six years with the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan.
He was a member of the Western Cherokee Nation of Arkansas and Missouri and Teamsters Local Union No. 838. He was also a member of Faith Builders International Church in De Soto and had participated in Operation Sunshine and R.O.C.K., organizations within the church.
He and Patricia Ann Ramsey were married Oct. 1, 1992, in De Soto.
Those preceding him in death were his grandparents, Clarence Chaline, Henry Francis McAlphine and Irene Featherstone.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Chaline, of the home; five daughters, Julie Ann Rose Chaline of Osawatomie, Ashley Lee Ann Chaline of Overland Park, Skylar Michele Chaline of Gardner, Alicia Chaline of Manhattan and Katrina Chaline of Tonganoxie; two sons, Thomas Daniel Christian Chaline of Tonganoxie and Robert Warren Chaline of Manhattan; his parents, Robert Chaline of Houston, Texas, and Billie Pearl Chaline of Pasadena, Texas; a grandmother, Naomie Thibbeaux of Houston; five brothers, Richard Chaline of Pittsburg, Randall Chaline of Fort Stockton, Texas, Gerald Chaline and Roger Chaline of Houston and Brian Chaline of Palm Bay, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Lois Chaline of Pasadena and Lisa Chaline of Anoka, Minn.; and one grandson.
Services were held Saturday in the church. Military services were held at the graveside in De Soto Cemetery. Arrangements were cared for by Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner.
Memorials may be made to Operation Sunshine at Faith Builders International Church, 6390 Peoria, De Soto, KS 66018.

Mable Stults Brizendine
(May 10, 1919 - July 22, 2001)

Mable Stults Brizendine, 82, Fort Scott, a former resident of Drexel, Mo., and Spring Hill, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, in Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.
She was born May 10, 1919, in Archie, Mo., the daughter of William T. and Emma Lee Boydston Green. The family moved to Drexel when she was a child. She attended rural CD No. 1 school in Cleveland, Mo.
She and William N. Stults were married in 1935 in Drexel. They became the parents of six children. He preceded her in death in 1971.
They moved shortly after their marriage to Los Angeles, Calif., where they lived nearly five years before returning to Drexel. In 1960 they moved to the Jingo community north of La Cygne. They lived there until 1968 when they moved to the Spring Hill area.
She married Earl Brizendine in 1979 in Albuquerque, N.M. He died in May 1997.
Mrs. Brizendine continued to live in the Spring Hill area until 1995, when she moved to Fort Scott to be near family members.
She was a member of the Drexel Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school for several years.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, working with crafts, baking, cooking and garage sales.
A stepdaughter, Virginia Majors, and a stepson, Leonard Stults, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are her six children, Max Stults of San Diego, Calif., Mike Stults of Kansas City, Mo., William Stults of Fort Scott, Adis Stults and Harold Stults, both of Osawatomie, and Rita Barnard of Creve Coeur, Ill.; seven stepchildren, Kenneth Brizendine of Lancaster, Calif., Marion Brizendine of Kansas City, Mo., Betty Samples of Oklahoma City, Okla., Shirley Looney and Carolyn Hucheson, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; Margaret Lewis of Grandview, Mo., and Connie Mackey of Independence, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; 24 stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home and burial will be in Rockville Cemetery in Drexel.

Leo Christopher Budke
(April 25, 1915 - July 18, 2001)

Leo Christopher Budke, 86, a former Osawatomie resident and retired banker, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in his home in Mesa, Ariz.
He was born April 25, 1915, in Tipton, Kan., and was one of the eight children of William J. and Margaret H. Koster Budke. He graduated in 1932 from St. John's High School in Beloit, Kan.
He was the first person from Mitchell County, Kan., to be drafted into the U.S. Army Dec. 2, 1940. He served five years, including three as a commissioned officer. He was discharged Jan. 16, 1946.
He and Virginia Aileen Howard were married Feb. 17, 1947. They became the parents of two children. She died June 8, 1974.
He married Eleanor Lee Eddy Waggoner Sept. 6, 1975.
Mr. Budke was a banker in Cawker City, Kan., and Osawatomie until he retired and moved to Arizona in 1983.
He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. He was a member of the American Legion and Lions Club. He was presented the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services in 1998 by the Lions Club International Foundation.
He was known as a friend to everyone he met.
Preceding him in death include two brothers, Leonard Budke and Larry Budke, and two sisters, Helen Gengler and Irene Schmitz.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Budke of the home; his daughter, Marcia Roberts of North Pole, Alaska; a son, James Budke of Overland Park; a stepdaughter, Diana Reed of Tempe, Ariz.; two brothers, Joseph Budke and Charles Budke; a sister, Connie Wesley; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass was Wednesday in St. Peter and Paul Church in Cawker City, followed by burial in the church cemetery with military honors. Local arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie where a visitation was held Monday night.
