Lucille Charolette Coker
(March 1, 1912 - July 18, 2001)

Lucille Charolette Coker, 89, a longtime resident of Osawatomie and retired Osawatomie businesswoman, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Johnson County Nursing Home in Olathe.
She was born March 1, 1912, in Osawatomie. She was the eighth of the nine children of John Thomas and Katie Belle Drown Jenkins. She grew up in near Osawatomie and attended rural Union Valley School. She was a 1931 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
She and Frank Lloyd Coker were married Oct. 17, 1932, in Madison, Kan. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children.
Mr. and Mrs. Coker owned and operated the Coker Stores at the intersection of Sixth and Main streets in Osawatomie for many years before they retired in 1981. The Coker Store was operated by the third generation of the family before it was sold.
Her memberships included the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie where she was a member of its United Methodist Women and the church choir. She was also a member of Chapter DO of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Busy Bee Prayer Group, both of Osawatomie.
Those preceding her in death included her husband; a daughter, Patricia Dee Coker, who died in infancy; four sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Coker of San Antonio, Texas, and Tom Coker of Olathe; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in the church, followed by P.E.O. services. Julie Jeffries was the soloist, accompanied by Shelly Holm, organist. Pallbearers were Ryan McDougal, Cory McDougal, Scot Coker, Bret Coker, Joel Coker, Chad Coker, Dalton Coker, Devin Coker, Larry Coker Jr. and Keith Holm. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.
Arrangements were cared for by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.
Memorials are to the church.

David Paul Brown
(May 1, 1987 - July 21, 2001)

David Paul Brown, 14, rural Paola, died early Saturday, July 21, 2001, in a one-vehicle accident west of Osawatomie on John Brown Highway near the intersection with Bethel Church Road.
He was born May 1, 1987, in Paola and was the youngest of the six children of William Ralph and Georgie Lee Mote Brown.
He was promoted in May from Osawatomie Middle School. He participated in basketball in school, city soccer and tae kwon do.
His grandparents preceded him in death.
Surviving are his mother, Georgie Lee Brown of the home; his father, William R. Brown of Lane; three brothers, Joshua William Brown of Lane, Caleb Andrew Brown of Osawatomie and Jesse Joseph Brown of Paola; and two sisters, Melissa Lee Collins of Lane and Nicole Rena Billups of Gardner.
Services were Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Highland Park Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.
Contributions may be made to the David Brown Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

Victoria Rose Groves
(Sept. 18, 1961 - July 18, 2001)

Victoria Rose Groves, 39, Osawatomie, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in her home.
She was born Sept. 18, 1961, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of David Martin and Merrie Mac Swanson Shadron. She and Kenneth Ray Groves were married Nov. 6, 1987. He died Oct. 30, 2000.
Survivors include her father of Hendersonville, N.C.; her mother, Merrie Gibson of Winnetka, Calif.; and her sister, Sandra Shadron of Bloomington, Minn.
Inurnment was in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo. Local arrangements were cared for by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Margaret M. Selle
Dec. 15, 1910 - July 19, 2001)

Margaret M. Selle, 90, a former Paola resident, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Beverly Health Care Center in Spring Hill.
She was born Dec. 15, 1910, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Henry and Amelia Carstensen in Kansas City, Kan. She grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and attended public schools there.
She married Walter Selle in 1929. He died in 1986.
Mrs. Selle was active in her church. She worked in real estate for many years. After retirement, she moved to southern Missouri and then later to Bella Vista, Ark. She returned to this area 2 1/2 years ago due to health reasons.
Surviving are her two sons, Richard H. Selle of Paola and Rollo D. Selle of Lakeview, Ark.; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A memorial service was Wednesday in Faith Lutheran Church in Prairie Village.

Robert L. Chambers
(Jan. 13, 1948 - July 17, 2001)

Robert L. Chambers, 53, a former Paola resident, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday, July 17, 2001, in his home in Springfield, Mo.
He was born Jan. 13, 1948, in Paola, the son of George L. and Jennie L. Ricketts Chambers. He had lived in Springfield for the past 14 years.
He graduated from Paola High School in 1966.
He joined the Kansas National Guard in Paola and was on active duty in Vietnam. Upon his return, he worked at Pemco Inc. and Miami County Cooperative Association in Paola. He had worked at Custom Metalcraft and U-Haul in Springfield until his death.
Surviving are his wife, Tara Chambers, and her children, Shannon, Adam, Kristin and Jacob; his parents, George and Jennie Chambers of rural Paola; a sister, Vicky Merimee of Olathe; and a brother, Richard Chambers of Parker.
Services were Friday at the Greenlawn Funeral Home and burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, both in Springfield.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Lloyd W. Freeman
(Oct. 19, 1900 - July 8, 2001)

Lloyd W. Freeman, 100, Collbran, Colo., a former resident of Linn County, died Sunday, July 8, 2001.
The son of Walter and Ione House Freeman, he was born Oct. 19, 1900, in Centerville. He lived in a sod house with his parents on their homestead in western Kansas for a time.
After graduating from Blue Mound High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in science and education from Pittsburg State University. He furthered his education at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colo.
His teaching career began in Linn County and Spring Hill. He then moved to Colorado where he taught until retiring.
He and Florence McGee were married Aug. 1, 1931. She died Dec. 10, 1995, in Collbran.
Mr. Freeman was a member of the Collbran Congregational Church.
A brother, Lee Freeman, was among those preceding him in death.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Freeman of Grundy, Va., four daughters, Anita Huiatt of Murray, Utah, Nina Sonnenberg of Matthews, N.C., Wynona Batman of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lita Hill of Collbran; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were July 13 in the church.

Those attending from Kansas were Charles and Edna Lanham of Mound City, Earnest and LaVerne McGee of Centerville and Mary and Abby Greene of Kansas City.

Raymond Howard Ashwell
(Jun 17, 1918 - Dec. 25, 2001)

Raymond Howard Ashwell, 83, Edinburg, Texas, a former Paola resident and businessman, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in McAllen Medical Center. He had been fighting cancer for two years.
He was born June 17, 1918, in Affton, Mo.
He married Flossie Cloteen Homer June 12, 1940, in Marshall, Mo. They moved to Paola in 1944.
Mr. Ashwell had worked at Marley & Co. before moving to Paola. While here, he was superintendent of the former Hayes Quarry for many years and was a partner in the Miami County Livestock Sale Barn. He also farmed.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2673 of Paola.
He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Private services were Dec. 29 at Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill, Mo.
Memorials have been established in his name to the Masonic Lodge in Paola.
