McBRIDE, Viola G. McBride, 100 years old of Nortonville, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Village Villa Nursing Home in Nortonville, KS.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM, Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the Nortonville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norma Thompson, officiating. Burial will be in the Nortonville Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2:00 PM until service time at the church. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. McBride are suggested to Nortonville United Methodist Church or Jefferson County Hospice and may be sent in care of the O’Trimble Funeral Home, PO Box 267, Nortonville, KS 66060 who is in charge of the arrangements. Viola G. Gantenbein was born on June 26, 1906 in Dickinson County, Kansas, the daughter of Ulrich and Frieda (Tobler) Gantenbein. She graduated from Enterprise High School, Enterprise, KS, attended Emporia State Teachers College, Emporia, KS and Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. She taught school for six years in Dickinson County, KS. After moving to Nortonville, she worked for the First National Bank of Nortonville for a few years. Mrs. McBride was a member of the Nortonville United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, was a member of the Nortonville Methodist Women’s Society of the church, the Homemakers Club, and charter member of the Nortonville Garden Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, crocheting, knitting, spending time in her yard and flower garden, fishing and baking cookies to share with her friends and neighbors.

Viola had relatives from eight states from Alaska to North Carolina help her celebrate her 100th birthday in June of 2006.

Viola and Willard D. McBride were married on June 25, 1931 at the church parsonage in New Basel, KS in Dickinson County. He preceded Viola in death on September 9, 1969. Three brothers, Harvey, Lester and Earl Gantenbein, and one sister, Clara Smith, also proceeded in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Gigstad of Nortonville, KS and Marlene Brown of Leavenworth, KS; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Edwin Gantenbein of Grove, OK and one sister, Wilma Childers of Fort Morgan, CO.

CAVANAUGH, Alma M. Cavanaugh, 90 years old of Denton, KS, passed away, Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Atchison Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at St. Benedict’s Church, Bendena, KS with Fr. Roderic Geller as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Benedict’s Church Cemetery, Bendena. A family rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM, Monday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM with a Prayer Service being recited at 7:00 PM, also at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Cavanaugh are suggested to the Denton Senior Citizens Center. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Alma M. Bunck was born on July 8, 1916 at Everest, Kansas, the daughter of William J. and Anna T. (Hrnchir) Bunck. She graduated from Everest High School. She had worked for the Horton Garment Factory at Horton, KS and as a devoted farm wife. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Bendena, the church council, and was a communion minister of the church. Alma belonged to the Denton Card Club, she attended the monthly meeting of the Denton Senior Citizens group and she enjoyed gardening.

Alma and W.J. Cavanaugh were married on November 27, 1952 at All Saints Church in Everest, Kansas. He preceded Alma in death in 1983. Her parents; three brothers, Albert, William and Edward Bunck; and one sister, Amy Bunck, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include Alma’s daughter and husband, Margaret and Scott Wright of Troy, KS; two granddaughters and their husbands, Shanna and Justin Smith & Jessie and Casey Jarrett, all of Troy; two great granddaughters, Kirsten and Emma; two sisters, Jeanette Gronniger of Denton and Sr. Mary Margaret Bunck of Atchison, KS; numerous nieces and nephews.

HUNDLEY, Robert E. “Papa Bob” Hundley, 79, Atchison, KS passed away Friday, March 2, 2007 at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the First Baptist Church, Atchison, KS. Burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Monday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave. Atchison, KS. 66002. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial donations to the First Baptist Church, American Cancer Society or the American Stroke Association in care of the funeral home. Bob was born July 24, 1927 in Atchison, KS the son of Earl Lee and Mary Elizabeth “Mae” (Brown) Hundley. He was a graduate of Atchison High School and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in WW II and the Korean War. Bob was a watchmaker for 5 years, and later owned and operated Hundley Insurance. He was a member of the Lion’s Club for 52 years and a member of the Masonic Lodge #158. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Men’s Breakfast, the Country Mart Coffee Club and he was a member of Bellevue Country Club. He was cofounder of the Shannon Township Volunteer Fire Department and was in charge of Atchison’s 4th of July fireworks celebration for over 52 years. He and his family were honored as the Kiwanis’s family of the year in 1993.

He married Thomasine “Tommie” Wilson in April 23, 1950 in Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother in law William Davis.

Survivors include his sister Betty Lee Davis and niece Terri Dieker of Jacksonville, FL. Children David Hundley and his wife Stephanie, Robyn Hinton and her husband Gregg, Brian Hundley and his wife Michelle, Leigh Anne Hunt all of Atchison, KS. Lisa Sparks and her husband Gary of North Kansas City, MO and Pennie Wallerstedt and her husband John of Atchison, KS. Grandchildren Maggie and Dusty Smithee, Heidi Hinton, Hayleigh and Adam Diebolt, Alison Hinton, Jessica and Chase Hundley, Bryce and Jenna Hundley, Tyler Hunt, and Madison and Britlyn Sparks. Great granddaughter Hayden Scholz, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

MUELLER, Samuel McRoberts Mueller, 86, of Atchison, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2007 at the Medicalodge of Atchison.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, KS with the Rev. Gerard Senecal O.S.B., as celebrant. A parish rosary will be recited at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, at St. Benedict’s Church with visitation to follow until time of service. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Memorial contributions may be made to Atchison Catholic Elementary School or St. Benedict’s Church. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, KS is in charge of the arrangements. Samuel Mueller was born January 1, 1921 in Washington D.C., the son of Lt. Colonel C.P. Mueller and Nancy Belle (McRoberts) Mueller. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, TX in 1940; attended North Texas University in Arlington, TX and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX. He served in the Navy from 1942-1945 during World War II working as a First Class Fleet Welder for submarine repair. Mr. Mueller was a sign shop manufacturer and owned and operated the Acme Sign Company in San Antonio, TX, from 1950-1983. Samuel and Marguerite Moore were married on April 15, 1948 in New Braunfels, TX. Before moving to Atchison, they also lived at the Lewis and Clark Village, Rushville, MO, where Samuel had served on the Lewis and Clark Council.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Mueller, of the home; three cousins; two nieces and two nephews.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clive Mueller.

CHMIDLING, Marilyn C. Chmidling, 67, Nortonville, KS passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 5, 2007 at St. Joseph Church, Nortonville, KS. with Fr. John Reynolds, celebrant. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery. A parish rosary will be said at 5:00 P.M. Sunday followed by the visitation until 7:00 P.M. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Church and left in care of O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Mrs. Chmidling was born June 15, 1939 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Matthew and Ruby (Boatwright) Wolters. She attended Atchison Catholic Schools and Mount Saint Scholastica. She was a cook for St. Joseph School and Village Villa in Nortonville and later served as the Dietary Manager. Marilyn was a member of the St. Joseph Church and served on the Altar Society. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crocheting, singing, gardening, cooking, playing cards, and going to the casino.

Marilyn married Bill Chmidling on April 16, 1955 at St. Joseph Church, Atchison, KS. They were married 50 years until his death on October 19, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Caroline Sue Chmidling and a brother Tom Wolters.

Mrs. Chmidling is survived by her children Raymond Chmidling and his wife Lynette of Belle Fourche, SD; Theresa Chmidling of Nortonville, KS; Mike Chmidling and his wife Ruth of Leavenworth, KS; Mary Agnes Highfill and her husband Nelson of Atchison, KS; Mark Chmidling and his wife Jenny of Lansing, KS; and Janice Wilson of Leavenworth, KS. 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandsons, sister Judy Darrah of Shawnee, KS and a brother Jim Wolters of Kansas City, MO. and numerous nieces and nephews.

SONNENMOSER, Virginia Mae Sonnenmoser 80, Rushville, MO. went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 5, 2007 at St. Benedict Church, Atchison, KS with Father Gerard Senecal, O.S.B. celebrant. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A prayer service will be said at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, March 4, 2007 with visitation until 7:00 P.M. at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorials are suggested to Hands of Hope Hospice in St. Joseph, MO or ACES in Atchison, KS. and may be left in care of Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home 800 Kansas Ave. Atchison, KS. 66002. Born Virginia Mae Kuhnert on December 23, 1926 in Bendena, Kansas, she lived on a farm near Independence Creek most of her childhood. After working as a governess for families in Kansas City, Virginia returned to rural life. On April 22, 1947 she married Otto Franklin Sonnenmoser. She lived the rest of her life on their farm near Rushville, MO. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish in Atchison, KS.

Virginia’s love for farming was evident in her hard work. Many will remember buying eggs or chickens from her. Countless residents in Southwestern Buchanan County will fondly remember seeing her driving tractors or grain trucks, keeping the farm going with her sons after losing her husband in 1983.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Clara Kuhnert; two brothers, Theodore and Willis Kuhnert; a sister, Thelma Kuhnert and her precious infant daughter, Agnes Claire Sonnenmoser.

She is survived by five children, Virginia Anne (and Gerald) Smith, Kansas City, MO; Otto F. Sonnenmoser, Rushville, MO; Elizabeth S. (and David) Coffman, Columbus, NE; Kenneth E. (and Linda) Sonnenmoser, Mission Hills, KS and John C. (and Pamela) Sonnenmoser, Rushville, MO. Virginia has six surviving grandchildren, Brian Perry, Kansas City, MO; Darren Perry, Parkville, MO; Karen Brooks, Columbia, MO; Jennifer Barta, Columbus, NE; April Coffman, Columbus, NE and Jonathan Coffman, Columbus, NE. She has seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers, Arthur Kuhnert, Lawrence, KS; Harold Kuhnert, Atchison, KS; George Kuhnert, Pea Ridge, AR and Vernon Kuhnert, Bartlesville, OK; four sisters, Fern Myers, Blue Springs, MO; Ann Leonard, Philomath, OR; Betty Lipscomb, Springfield, MO; Alice Williams, Blue Springs, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
