Joyce Marie Atchison
(Nov. 21, 1943 - March 22, 2002)

Joyce Marie Atchison, 58, Osawatomie, died Friday, March 22, 2002, in the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 21, 1943, in Walker, Kan., the third of the seven children of John Thomas and Margaret Irene Riedel Baumstimler. The family later lived in the Lane community before moving to the rural Osawatomie area. She was a 1961 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
She and Richard Leroy Atchison were married Oct. 19, 1963, in Emporia. They moved many times because of his military career. They became the parents of two children. He preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1982.
Mrs. Atchison was a homemaker, but did work for a time at the Ball Glass Plant in Chicago, Ill.
Her father, John Baumstimler, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Jerome Atchison of Conifer, Colo., and daughter, Jolene Brumagin of Union City, Pa.; her mother, Margaret Irene Johnston of Osawatomie; a brother, John Thomas Baumstimler of Virginia Beach, Va.; five sisters, Juanita Sue Harter of Osawatomie, Judith Ann Schultz of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mary Jane Couture of Oakland, Maine, Jodi Rae Alley of Pratt, Kan., and Jenice Evans of Blairstown, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Cremation followed the service.

Lois Dale Cady
(July 21, 1908 - March 21, 2002)

Lois Dale Cady, 93, a native of La Cygne and former Parker area resident, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Louisburg Care Center.
Known as Dale, she was born July 21, 1908, near La Cygne, the second of the 10 children of Jesse and Coral May Shattuck Crisler. She was a 1926 graduate of La Cygne High School.
She obtained her normal school certificate from Pittsburg State University and taught country school in Linn County from 1926 until 1933.
She and Warren Henry Cady were married March 25, 1933, in Lawrence. They lived in Centerville for four years and then in Lander, Wyo., for one year. They moved to Parker in 1938 and settled on the Cady family farm. They remained there until 1961 when they moved to Junction City, Kan. After the death of her husband March 24, 1968, she returned to the Cady farm where she lived until moving to La Cygne in 1989. She resided in Mound City Nursing Center from 1993 until moving to the Louisburg Care Center in 1998.
Mrs. Cady was charge cook in the main kitchen at Osawatomie State Hospital from 1950 to 1955 and attended college classes at Ursuline Academy in Paola.
She then taught in Parker schools from 1955 until 1961 and fifth grade at Fort Riley, Kan., on the U.S. Army base from 1961 until 1969. During this time she earned a bachelor's degree in 1962 from Emporia State University and her master's degree in 1966. She taught reading in the Prairie View School District from 1969 until completing her teaching career and retiring in 1973.
Her family and friends were very important to her. She loved to sew and crochet, making afghans for her children and grandchildren; and traveling with friends. She had toured 49 of the 50 states, many Canadian provinces and the Bahamas.
She was interested in community affairs all of her life. Mrs. Cady was the first librarian of the Parker Library. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Parker and a charter member of its women's association, now known as United Methodist Women. She was a member of Parker Chapter No. 307 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and had served as district aide. She was a member of Cadmus Grange No. 350 for more than 55 years and a life member of the Parker Community Historical Society.
Her other memberships included Loyal Workers Club of Parker, Parker Senior Citizens, Linn County Republican Women, Linn County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, National Education Association, New Mission Parish board of directors and Mid America Council on Aging.
Others preceding her in death included two brothers, Jay Crisler and Alden Crisler, and a sister, Ruth Hay.
Survivors include her son, Gene Cady of Olathe; her daughter, Janice Stahl of rural Parker; four sisters, Sue Senate of Streator, Ill., Eula Holden of San Antonio, Texas, Erma Hampton of La Cygne and Rosalie Davis of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Frank Crisler of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Wayne Crisler of Spring Hill; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday in the church, followed by burial in Cadmus Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Mark Cady, Scott Cady and Kent Stahl, and her nephews, Mike Brown, Ron Senate, Bob Crisler and Jim Hampton. Arrangements were cared for by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.
Memorials may be made to the church in care of the funeral home.

Wanda Irene Manchester
(Jan. 12, 1932 - March 23, 2002)

Wanda Irene Manchester, 70, Osawatomie, died Saturday, March 23, 2002.
She was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Miami County, Kan., the daughter of Barney and Elsie Zebert Brocker. She graduated from Louisburg High School in 1950.
She and Byron Manchester were married June 4, 1950, and they made their home on a farm near Wagstaff, Kan. They sold the farm in 1957 and moved to Eureka, Kan. They owned and operated the Dairy Queen there for six years.
In addition to being a homemaker, she also had worked as a waitress and housekeeper.
Among those preceding her in death were a granddaughter, Donna L. Manchester.
Survivors include her husband, Byron Manchester of Osawatomie; two sons, Douglas B. Manchester and Bret E. Manchester, both of Osawatomie; two daughters, Kelley L. Thompson of Weir, Kan., and Rene I. Woods of Arma, Kan.; her mother, Elsie Brocker of Paola; a sister, Bonnie Debrick of Paola; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Spring Grove Friends Church southwest of Osawatomie. Inurnment will be in the Wagstaff Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Runyan-Dickey Funeral Home in Louisburg.
Memorials may be made to the Spring Grove Friends Church.

Adrian Graves
(March 25, 1918 - March 25, 2002)

Adrian Graves, 84, a lifelong resident of the Garnett area, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett.
He was born March 25, 1918, in Anderson County, the son of Pasha and Pearly May Burrows Graves.
He helped neighbors with odd jobs and did lawn work.
Those preceding him in death were three brothers, Leonard Augustus Graves, Ossman Pasha Graves and DuWayne Burrows Graves; and two sisters, LeNora Ardeth Conlan and LaVerna Agnes Tilton.
Survivors include a sister, Loma Anita Lawrence of Garnett, and nieces and nephews.
Services were Wednesday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett, followed by burial in Garnett Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to TRI-KO Inc. in Garnett, in care of the funeral home.

Ruth W. Griffith
(Oct. 27, 1925 - March 23, 2002)

Ruth W. Griffith, 76, Osawatomie, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, in the Olathe Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Mildred, Kan., one of the seven children of Preston and Sarah Burkhead Diehm. The family moved to Paola where she attended school.
Osawatomie became her home when she married Elwyn L. Griffith March 13, 1947, in Osawatomie. They became the parents of seven children and her family was the joy of her life.
In order to stay at home with her children, she started a day care for children in her home. She has continuously cared for children in her home until her recent illness.
In 1989 she and her husband became the owners and operators of Griff's Family Restaurant. They sold the business in 1991.
Mrs. Griffith was a member of the First Baptist Church and its MERA Sunday School Class, Osawatomie Rebekah Lodge No. 336 and John Hinkle Post No. 204 of the American Legion, all of Osawatomie.
Those preceding her in death were her husband, Elwyn L. Griffith, who died April 1, 1992; two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her seven children, Terry L. Griffith of Spring Hill, Bob G. Griffith of Raytown, Mo., Billy D. Griffith and Rita S. Schlesener, both of Paola, Sharon K. Griffith of Peculiar, Mo., Janie Minden of Osawatomie and Shelly Miller Hill of Long Beach, Miss.; two sisters, Thelma Hipkins and Ruth Short, both of Kansas City, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in the church. All of her grandchildren, Jimmy, Jered and Jason Minden, David W. Schlesener, Sarah Fields, Erica Warren, Angie, Kim, Fred, Chad, Brent and Wesli Griffith, Crystal and Tiffany Hill and Brandon Gaines, were pallbearers. Burial was in Miami Memorial Gardens north of Osawatomie.
Memorials may be made to the church in care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Roberta Mae Kitchell
(May 12, 1933 - March 21, 2002)

Roberta Mae Kitchell, 68, La Cygne, formerly of Bonner Springs, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in her home.
She was born May 12, 1933, in Kansas, a daughter of Robert Joseph and Myrtle Frances Venable Tinsley.
She and Charles Edward Kitchell Sr. were married Nov. 18, 1950, in Lenexa.
Mrs. Kitchell was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church in La Cygne.
Those preceding her in death were her husband, who died Oct. 23, 1985; five brothers, Johnny Tinsley, Robert Tinsley, Donald Tinsley, William Tinsley and Charles Henry Tinsley; two sisters, Irene Springer and Joyce Feldman; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include four children, Charles E. Kitchell Jr. of Chino Valley, Ariz., Daisy Capp of La Cygne, Linda Friday of Kansas City, Kan., and Susan Laurie of Raytown, Mo.; a sister, Barbara Stevenin of Platt City, Mo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday in Coffel-Schneider Mangold Funeral Home in La Cygne. Burial was in Cadmus Cemetery.
Memorials made be made to Hospice of Olathe Medical Center or the American Cancer Society.
