Robert E. Knox

Robert E. Knox, 50, Osawatomie, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, in his home.
He was born Dec. 22, 1952, in Lawrence, the son of Dorothy Marie Knox. He lived in Parsons, Kan., for a number of years before moving to Osawatomie in 1994.
Mr. Knox worked for TRI-KO Inc. in Osawatomie.
Services were today (Wednesday) in the First Baptist Church in Osawatomie, followed by burial in Osawatomie Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to TRI-KO Inc. or Miami County Humane Society.
Homer Leon Long
DEC. 21, 1908 - JUNE 13, 2003
Homer Leon Long, 94, Garnett, a native of Linn County and former Parker resident, died Thursday, June 13, 2003, in Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.
He was born Dec. 21, 1908, northeast of Centerville. His parents were Grover McDonald Long and Maude Ola Blair Long Griffith.
Mr. Long was a farmer all of his life and also owned and operated the Long Truck Line from 1960 until 1969.
He and Ethel Collins were married Feb. 24, 1932, in Paola. She preceded him in death May 22, 1993.
Mr. Long was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and Grange.
Others preceding him in death were a sister, Nellie Dunlop, and four brothers, James Griffith, Griff Griffith, Everette Griffith and Wilbur Griffith.
Survivors include a daughter, June L. Smoley of Paola; two sons, Wayne E. Long of Paola and Steven J. Long of Mound City; a brother, William Griffith of Raytown, Mo.; two sisters, Marjorie Stroup of Alvin, Texas, and Mary Westergren of Paola; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held today (Wednesday) in the Goodrich Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The Residencies in Pleasanton or Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett in care of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City.
Elver Oberheide
APRIL 23, 1923 - JUNE 17, 2003
Elver Oberheide, 80, Paola, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in the University of Kansas Medical Center.
He was born April 23, 1923, in Block, the son of John and Elizabeth Prothe Oberheide. He grew up in the Block community and after completing the eighth grade, he went to work on the family farm.
On April 10, 1959, he and Dorothy Nadine Brandt were married in Paola. They became the parents of one son.
Mr. Oberheide was a farmer all of his life. He also worked as a welder for Taylor Forge Engineered Systems in Paola for three years. Later he went to work for Kansas City Structural Steel Co. of Kansas. He retired from this firm in 1986 with 25 years of service.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Paola.
His pastimes included spending time with his grandchildren and other family members, gardening and his church activities.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Oberheide, who died in December 2000.
Survivors include his son, Wayne Oberheide of Olathe; a brother, Damon Oberheide of Paola; a sister, Dema Pope of Leawood; and two granddaughters.
Visitation is set for 6 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church, followed by burial in the Paola Cemetery.

Aaron Eldon Alexander
JUNE 7, 1990 - JULY 29, 2003
Aaron Eldon Alexander, 13, Mound City, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, of injuries suffered in a vehicle accident in rural Bourbon County.
The son of Kevin Wayne and Janice Golden Alexander, he was born June 7, 1990, in Fort Scott. He attended grade school in Prescott and Mound City and was currently a student at Jayhawk-Linn Junior High School in Mound City.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Pleasanton.
His hobbies were tearing apart and rebuilding things and he especially enjoyed helping his father with automobile restoration. He had a love for custom hot rods that he shared with many people.
Those preceding him in death were a grandfather, Eldon Alexander, and a great-grandmother.
Survivors include his parents, a sister, Jennifer Alexander, and a brother, Shaun Alexander, all of the home, and his grandparents, Raymond and Bertha Golden of Fort Scott and Joe and Eunice Elliott of Mound City.
Services were Saturday in the Mound City Grade School, followed by burial in the Curry Cemetery.

Andrew Almendarez Sr.
JULY 3, 1927 - JULY 30, 2003
Andrew Almendarez Sr., 76, Spring Hill, former Osawatomie resident, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in his home.
The son of Matilde and Petra Mendez Almendarez, he was born July 3, 1927, in Gowen, Okla. He grew up in Henrietta, Okla., where he attended local schools.
He served in the U.S. Army Corps from Dec. 7, 1945, until Dec. 25, 1946. After his discharge he returned to Oklahoma before moving to Kansas City.
Mr. Almendarez and Nattie Valadez were married and they became the parents of seven children.
He and Shirley Kempton were married March 7, 1970, in Peculiar, Mo., and they became the parents of three children. They lived in Grandview, Mo., and Shawnee before moving to Osawatomie in 1971. They had lived in Spring Hill since 1992.
Mr. Almendarez began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1960 as a railway mail carrier. He worked in the Shawnee Mission branch and in Stanley before his retirement in 1987.
Those preceding him in death were three brothers, four sisters and a stepdaughter.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Almendarez, of the home; his 10 children, Gloria Shotwell of Cantonsville, Md., Cynthia Hunter of Kansas City, Kan., Susan McDaniel of Edwardsville, Kan., Charles Almendarez of Marshall, Texas, Debra Bates of Shawnee, Pamela Bonner of Leavenworth, Andrew Almendarez Jr. of Belleville, Ill., Sharon Folsom of Osawatomie, Randall Almendarez of Topeka and Stefenie Graham of Spring Hill; two stepchildren, Richard Crust of Maryland and Ronald Crust of Lenexa; his brothers and sisters, Petra, Lucinda, Juanita, Matilde, Junior, Jessie, Paul and Geneva; 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie with Capt. Andrew Almendarez Jr. officiating. Pallbearers were Kelly Graham, Derek Almendarez, Shane Almendarez, Cameron Almendarez, Christopher McDaniel and Jacob Goldman. Burial was in the Cadmus Cemetery
with military services.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home.
Charles William Barker
JAN. 9, 1935 - AUG. 2, 2003
Charles William Barker, 68, rural Osawatomie, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Olathe Medical Center.
Known as "Charlie," he was born Jan. 9, 1935, in Osawatomie. He was the youngest of the five children of Thomas Robert and Emma Margaret Rauhut Barker. He was a 1953 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
Mr. Barker had worked in construction, but for most of his working years he was an over-the-road trucker.
He and Janice Fay Inscore were married Nov. 4, 1954. They made their home in the Osawatomie area and raised two children.
Mr. Barker was a member of the First Baptist Church of Osawatomie.
Those preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Ruth Blackwell.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Barker of the home; a son, Charles Ray Barker of Osawatomie; a daughter, Catherine Fay Barker of Osawatomie; a brother, Robert Barker of Osawatomie; two sisters, Betty Troutman of Osawatomie and Frances Troxel of Herrington, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, followed by burial in Osawatomie Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name at the First Option Bank in Osawatomie.
