Kenneth John Hermreck

Kenneth John Hermreck, 72, Garnett, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at his home.
He was born July 30, 1931, in Garnett, the son of Peter Joseph and Cecelia Kenkel Hermreck. He grew up in the Garnett community and attended area country schools.
Mr. Hermreck served with the U.S. Army from 1950-1953 during the Korean War and was stationed in Iceland.
He and Norma Grimm were married July 22, 1954, in Cheyenne, Wyo.
He had worked numerous places in pipeline work and drove a truck hauling produce cross country. From 1960 to 1962 he lived in Welda where he and his wife operated the Hilltop Tavern. He then moved to Garnett and worked for Reno Construction for 21 years. Before retiring July 22, 1990, he worked for seven years for United Construction Co., driving a truck to haul equipment.
Mr. Hermreck was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a 21-year member of the American Legion; and a member of Teamsters Local 541.
His hobbies included fishing, gardening and working on automobiles.
Those preceding him in death included a daughter, Lorie Hermreck, who died Nov. 2, 1993; three brothers, Gerald Hermreck, Paul Hermreck and Charles Ray Hermreck; and two sisters, Vera Benus and Doris Browning.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Hermreck of Garnett; two sons, Joe Hermreck of Lancaster, Kan., and Gary Hermreck of St. Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Sue Zentner and Debbie Welsh, both of Garnett, and Peggy Miller of Colony, Kan.; two sisters, Darlene Seaton of Ottawa and Edna Mae Thoutt of Brighton, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church in Garnett. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery.
Ilene Buckman Maloney
Ilene Buckman Maloney, 87, Gardner, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004. The Osawatomie native had lived in Gardner about two years. There will be no services as Mrs. Maloney had donated her body to science. Survivors include her siblings, Lorraine Fields and James Buckman, both of Osawatomie, and her children. A complete obituary will appear in next week's edition of the Osawatomie Graphic.
Memorial services for Marian Spears of Wilmington, Del., will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Louisburg Cemetery. Mrs. Spears, 84, died Dec. 24. Mrs. Spears is the widow of the late Henry Spears, a native of Louisburg. She is known by many in the Louisburg and Osawatomie communities as the couple often returned for the Louisburg Alumni activities and to visit his sister and brother-in-law, Everett and Emma Reeder, former Osawatomie residents now living in Paola.
Dorothy Marie Boots
OCT. 16, 1904 - JAN. 29, 2004
Dorothy Marie Boots, 99, Garnett, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care in Garnett.
Known as "Dora," she was born Oct. 16, 1904, in Scipio, Kan., the daughter of Fred and Thresa Brummel Litsch. She and Henry King were married Jan. 10, 1927.
After the death of her first husband, she and John Moore were married May 3, 1952. He also preceded her in death. Her third marriage was to Claude Boots on July 7, 1976. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Boots, a homemaker, was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett.
Survivors include two brothers, Fred Litsch of Garnett and LeRoy Litsch of Osawatomie.
Services were Monday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Holy Angels Cemetery
in Garnett.
Leonard Adolf Brandt
APRIL 18, 1922 - JAN. 26, 2004
Leonard Adolf Brandt, 81, rural Paola, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 18, 1922, in the Block community, the son of John and Alvina Geuy Brandt. He was a lifelong resident of the Block area. He attended East Valley country school near Paola.
He married Katherine Monthey on March 6, 1946, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Block. They became the parents of four children.
Mr. Brandt farmed his entire life in the Block area, raising crops, cattle and hogs. The only time he worked off the farm was in the 1950s when he was employed at Taylor Forge Engineered Systems.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Block, where he was baptized and later confirmed on April 5, 1936.
He enjoyed trips to the Miami County Cooperative facility in Fontana to visit with friends and discuss farming. He also enjoyed playing cards and snooker, hunting, and fishing.
Those preceding him in death included a son, Leonard D. Brandt, who died at birth.
Surviving are his wife, Katherine Brandt of the home; his son, Darrell Brandt, and two daughters, Darleen Medlin and Nancy Honn, all of Paola; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were Friday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Debrick Cemetery.

Edna R. Brayton
JUNE 24, 1917 - FEB. 1, 2004
Edna R. Brayton, 86, La Cygne, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in Royal Terrace Nursing Home in Olathe.
She was born June 24, 1917, in Mound City, the daughter of Lee and Ethel Venters Schasteen.
Mrs. Brayton was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mound City and of Delta Sigma Chi Bridge Club.
Her husband, Charles Ellis Brayton, preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1987.
Survivors include a son, Bob McGee of La Cygne; a daughter, Sue Dover of Olathe; a brother, Edgar Schasteen of Mound City; six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were today in Coffel-Schneider Mangold Funeral Home in La Cygne.

Leslie Copeland
OCT. 25, 1908 - JAN. 31, 2004
Leslie Copeland, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, in Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett.
She was born Oct. 25, 1908, in Windsor, Mo., the daughter of Leslie and Myrtle Stratton Gray. She graduated from high school in Windsor.
On Aug. 3, 1931, she and Marshall E. Copeland were married in Windsor.
Mrs. Copeland had lived in the Garnett area for the past 44 years and was a homemaker. Soon after her 90th birthday, she moved to Parkside Place Apartments. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Garnett.
Those preceding her in death included her husband; a daughter, Shirley Fooshee, who died Dec. 20, 2003; a sister, Mary Ellen Mosier; and three brothers, George Gray, Ralph Gray and Myron Gray.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Copeland of De Soto and Rodney Copeland of Colchester, Vt.; a sister, Mildred Mayfield, Platt City, Mo.; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church, followed by burial in Garnett Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Bernard C. Hesse
APRIL 14, 1934 - JAN. 29, 2004
Bernard C. Hesse, 69, Greeley, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 14, 1934, in St. Marys, Kan., the son of Conrad and Edith Grace Brunin Hesse. He was raised in St. Marys and had lived in Greeley since 1964.
Mr. Hesse worked in construction for many years before going to work for Taylor Forge Engineered Systems at the Greeley plant. His retirement came in 1999.
He and Kathryn Joan Gehr were married April 28, 1962, in Topeka. She died Dec. 21, 1997.
His memberships included St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Greeley.
Others preceding him in death included a son, Brent Hesse, who died Aug. 13, 2003.
Survivors include two sons, John Hesse and Allen Hesse, both of Greeley; four daughters, Julie Katzer of Garnett, Carla O'Connor of Ottawa and Jennie Brown and Jill Hesse, both of Greeley; two brothers, Conrad Hesse and Francis Hesse, the deceased's twin, both of St. Marys; two sisters, Inez Norwood of Grand Junction, Colo., and Stella Tyler of St. Marys; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were Monday in the church, followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery, also in Greeley.
