Billy Orlo Brownback
MARCH 30, 1929 - MARCH 22, 2004

Laurie A. Ritch, 48, Billy Orlo Brownback, 74, Pharr, Texas, former resident and business owner in Linn County and a 1948 graduate of Parker Rural High School, died Monday, March 22, 2004.

The son of Orville and Leora Brownback, he was born March 30, 1929, in Centerville. He grew up on a farm in Linn County and then served his country as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army.

After completing his military service, Mr. Brownback drove vehicles for a trucking company and logged more than 30,000 hours of crop dusting.

He then settled into rural water line contracting by forming his own company, Brownback Construction in Pleasanton, which he successfully operated for 16 years. In 1983 he held an auction to sell out his company and retired. At that time, he moved to Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Brownback of the home; two sons, Michael Reves of Hankamer, Texas, and Terry Brownback of Americus, Kan.; two daughters, Cindy Martin of Camas, Wash., and Sherry Pack of Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Robert Brownback of Parker; two sisters, Mae Dean Hodgson of Eureka, Kan., and Delores Baldwin, Miller, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were March 24 in the Texas Trails RV Park in Pharr and Saturday in the First Christian Church in Pleasanton.

Sean David Burgoon
MAY 21, 1970 - MARCH 27, 2004

Laurie A. Ritch, 48, Sean David Burgoon, 33, Osawatomie, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, in Overland Park Regional Medical Center from injuries suffered earlier in the day in a one-vehicle accident.

He was born May 21, 1970, in Paola, the son of Stephen Robert and Jane Ann Johns Burgoon. He grew up in Osawatomie and attended local schools.

He was employed as a laborer in the construction industry.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Another pastime was playing video games, many of which he had mastered. He was a gun collector and a member of the National Rifle Association.

His wife of 14 years was Karen Daulton of Osawatomie.

Those preceding him in death were his mother, who died in a vehicle accident in 1971; his father, who died in 1995; and his grandparents, Derwood Jones and Mary Burgoon.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a sister, Jacinda Burgoon of Osawatomie; his grandparents, Florence Johns of Osawatomie and C.R. Burgoon; two half sisters, Brandie Burgoon and Stephanie Burgoon; and a half brother, Sevy Burgoon.

Services were today in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery. Pallbearers were Allen Hudson, David Rhodes, Gib Davis, Brian Dial, Ricky Daulton, Richard Keeton, Travis Maupin, Scott Hobert and Dusty Hoffman.

Memorials may be made to the Sean David Burgoon Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.

Marion Eva Clark
AUG. 23, 1924 - MARCH 21, 2004

Marion Eva Clark, 79, Drexel, Mo., died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Camden Health Center in Harrisonville, Mo. She suffered with breast cancer.

She was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Bismarck, N.D., the daughter of Anthony and Eva Bartole.

Her husband, John E. Clark, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Clark was known as a loving person and one who never met a stranger.

Two brothers were among those preceding her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Carlene Hale of Blue Springs, Mo., and Barbara Boettcher of Archie, Mo.; three sisters; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were Thursday in Sharon Cemetery in Drexel under the direction of Runyan Funeral Home of Drexel.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Kansas City Hospice.

Ida Maxine Funk
OCT. 22, 1928 - MARCH 29, 2004

Ida Maxine Funk, 75, Fort Scott, a native of Linn County, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Fort Scott Manor after a long illness suffering with cancer.

Known as Maxine, she was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Linn County, the daughter of Buford Franklin and Vera Rose Bowman Nickell. She graduated in 1946 from Parker Rural High School and received her teaching certificate from Pittsburg State University. She taught school for one year in Linn County and two years in Miami County.

On Nov. 6, 1948, she and Calvin Benjamin Funk were married in Fontana. They made their first home on a farm south of Cadmus and became the parents of two daughters. In the late 1950s they moved to Mound City. They later moved to Fort Scott.

Mrs. Funk retired from the Linn County Courthouse in Mound City where she had worked in the offices of the register of deeds and the country clerk. After her retirement, she worked for Wal-Mart in Fort Scott.

Her pastimes included sewing for her grandchildren and only recently had started doing computerized custom embroidery

Mrs. Funk was a member of the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Fort Scott.

Those preceding her in death included a brother, John Buford Nickell.

Survivors include her husband, Calvin Funk of the home; two daughters, Linda Hafer of Laurinburg, N.C., and Glinda Caline Heffernan of Fort Scott; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Cheney-Witt Funeral Home, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott. Services will at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Grace Baptist Tabernacle, 502 S. Margrove, Fort Scott. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Fort Scott.

Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice Inc., in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.

Rev. William Maurice Gardner
JAN. 19, 1925 - MARCH 18, 2004

The Rev. William Maurice Gardner, 79, a former pastor in Wea, Garnett, Greeley and Gardner, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., after suffering a stroke.

He was born Jan. 19, 1925, the son of Clarence H. and Mabel Gardner. He attended Conception Abbey Seminary in Conception, Mo., and was ordained June 7, 1952, at St. Peter's Cathedral.

His first assignment was Holy Name Parish in Kansas City, Kan., where he was chaplain to the University of Kansas Medical Center. He became pastor of Assumption in Gardner and at Sacred Heart in Gardner, where he was instrumental in getting the rectory built.

He later went to St. Lawrence in Easton, Kan., and then to Queen of the Holy Rosary in Wea, where he served from 1971 to 1977. He then served at Holy Angels in Garnett, St. John's Catholic Church in Greeley and back to Sacred Heart in Gardner.

Mr. Gardner had a natural artistic talent. At every parish, he used that talent to preserve and repair the churches and rectories.

He retired to the farm in Osage City, Kan., in 1989. He suffered a stroke and returned to Kansas City, Kan., where he lived in the Vianney Center at Savior of the World Pastoral Center.

Preceding him in death were a brother, Clarence C. Gardner, and two sisters, Dolores Kobets and Cleo Downey.

Survivors include his two brothers, Edmund Gardner and Thomas F. Gardner.

He willed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for science and teaching. A memorial Mass will be April 23 in Savior of the World Pastoral Center, 12601 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The time will be announced later. Joseph A. Butler and Son of Kansas City, Kan., is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Chancery Office, 12601 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, KS 66109; Conception Abbey, Conception, Mo.; or Maryknoll Sisters, Maryknoll, NY 10545.

Lola Marie Blankenship
JAN. 10, 1918 - JULY 19, 2004

Lola Marie Blankenship, 86, Rantoul, died Monday, July 19, 2004, in Olathe Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Ottawa, the daughter of Eugene Kelly and Philene May Barnes Whitacre. She grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1936. She was active in track and swimming.

She and George Hoyt Blankenship were married Sept. 4, 1937, in Paola. They moved to Kansas City, Mo., and returned to Franklin County in 1971. They were married for more than 65 years before his death on Jan. 15, 2003.

Mrs. Blankenship was a homemaker. While living in Kansas City, she worked for Gerson's Wholesale Jewelry.

She was baptized at the Leeds Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., and attended the United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, Kan. She served as president of the Ottawa Women's Athletic Association.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In her retirement years she enjoyed making crafts.

Four brothers and two grandchildren, Lois Sheree Ruby and Ronald Vincent Ruby, were among those preceding her in death.

Survivors include her two daughters, Lois Anne Bruner of Rantoul and Linda Mae Kistner of Vassar, Kan.; a sister, Virginia Mae Sutherland of Everman, Texas; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were Thursday in Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa. Burial was in Princeton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Franklin County Cancer Foundation Inc. or the Muscular Dystrophy Association and can be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.
