Betty J. Self Ely
AUG. 29, 1923 - SEPT. 30, 2004

Betty J. Self Ely, 81, a resident of Sugar Valley Lakes near Mound City, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola.

Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Ketchum, Okla., she was the daughter of Austin and Ruby Ringle Kindred.

Her first husband, Earl Self, preceded her in death. She later married Robert Ely, who survives, of the home.

Mrs. Ely was employed for a number of years as manager of a Montgomery Wards Catalog Store prior to retiring.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mound City.

Other survivors include her son, Bina Self of Sugar Valley Lakes; her daughter, Drena Turner of Coffeyville, Kan.; three stepchildren, Gregory Ely of Sugar Valley Lakes, Steve Ely of Gladstone, Mo., and Janet Jackson of Louisburg; and six grandchildren.

Services were Monday in the church. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan. Arrangements were under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home of Mound City.

Memorials may be made to the church.

James Robert Hiles
JULY 7, 1942 - MARCH 5, 2004

James Robert Hiles, 61, a former Paola resident, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Friday, March 5, 2004, at his home in Gallatin, Tenn.

A memorial graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Somerset Cemetery east of Paola.

"Jim," as he was more commonly known, was the son of Edgar Eugene and Elizabeth Opal Barnett Hiles. He was born July 7, 1942, in Burlington, Kan. The family moved in 1953 to Paola, where he attended school. He graduated from Johnson County Community College.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He moved to the Kansas City area from Paola in 1985 and to Tennessee in 2000.

Mr. Hiles was a police officer in Paola and Wyandotte County before retiring. While living in Paola, he helped out at the former Jim's Electric Shop.

He was a former Mason.

Although he never married or had children, he loved children.

His parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include his two sisters, LeEtta Brewer of Gallatin and Letha Lack of Springdale, Ark., and a brother, Jack Hiles of Overland Park.

Irean Bell Kyle
AUG. 15, 1909-OCT. 4, 2004

Irean Bell Kyle, 95, Garnett, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in Garnett.

Born Aug. 15, 1909, in Basehor, she was the daughter of Henry Daniel and Della DeMaranville Dunn. She attended school in Bonner Springs.

She and Walter Daniel Kyle were married Dec. 10, 1929, in Bonner Springs. They moved to Linn County in 1946 and then to Garnett in 1954 where she lived for the remainder of her life.

She had worked as a machine operator for H.D. Lee in Ottawa for more than 20 years.

Mrs. Kyle had attended the Assembly of God since the late 1950s where she had taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed quilting and canning.

Those preceding her in death were her husband, who died Feb. 19, 1973; a son, Chester Kyle; a daughter, Wilma Nickelson; a brother, Ira Dunn; and three grandsons.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Reed of Garnett; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett, Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a fund to help defray funeral expenses.

Wanita A. McLean
JUNE 27, 1913 - SEPT. 22, 2004

Wanita A. McLean, 91, Escondido, Calif., a Miami County native, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at a hospital in Escondido.

She was born June 27, 1913, in Stanton Township in Miami County, the daughter of Harry and Laura Ogden Sherar. She grew up in Miami County and graduated in 1930 from Paola High School.

She graduated in 1933 from nursing school at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. She worked at the hospital several years and then did private nursing. She was a registered nurse for 24 years before retiring.

Mrs. McLean joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps on Dec. 8, 1942, and trained at Fort Riley, Kan. She was sent to England and served until Feb. 1, 1946, attaining the rank of captain.

After returning to the states, she went to San Francisco, Calif. She married T.M. McLean of Concordia, Kan. They lived in Carmel, Calif. They later moved to Escondido. Her husband preceded her in death.

Others preceding her in death were a sister, Dorothy Sherar Nutt, and a brother, Harold Sherar.

She is survived by three nephews and three nieces, including Arline Nutt Hrenchir of Paola.

Mrs. McLean was cremated and will be buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery of rural Paola at a later date.

Karen J. Boney
MARCH 5, 1939 - NOV. 23, 2004

Karen J. Boney, 65, rural Fontana, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, in Olathe Medical Center.

She was born March 5, 1939, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Maynard and Mildred Morgan Kallaus. She grew up in Urbandale, Iowa, and graduated in 1957 from Urbandale High School.

As a young woman, she moved to the Kansas City area, where she was employed at Lifetouch Publishing Co. She worked for the publishing company for more than 20 years before retiring.

She and Harry Boney were married Aug. 10, 1992, in the Rose Garden in Kansas City, Mo. After their marriage, they lived in the Kansas City area until moving to rural Fontana. She worked for Farm Bureau in Paola until her illness.

Mrs. Boney enjoyed hunting, taking long walks on their acreage with her dogs, working with her flowers, reading novels and spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Boney of the home; three sons, Mike Smith of Buckner, Mo., Tim Smith of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Steve Smith of Oak Grove, Mo.; a daughter, Jeri Ruddy of Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers, Dick Kallaus of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jerry Kallaus of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Donna Avaux of Des Moines, Iowa; and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service was Friday in the First Christian Church in Osawatomie. Arrangements were by Wilson and Son Funeral Home of Paola.

Robert A. Breen
DEC. 21, 1904 - NOV. 20, 2004

Robert A. Breen, 99, Wheeling Ill., the father of Sherie A. Cole of Osawatomie, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in his home.

He was a professional horseman and worked as a steeplechase jockey and huntsman. He also trained horses for fox hunting and hunter and jumper shows and taught English riding while managing various stables in the Chicago area.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, Elsie, who died in 1978.

Other survivors include another daughter, Jean Piotrowski of Wheeling; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Inurnment was Nov. 23 in Warren Cemetery in Gurnee, Ill.

Steven Douglas Childs
SEPT. 22, 1952 - NOV. 22, 2004

Steven Douglas Childs, 52, Osawatomie, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

He was born Sept. 22, 1952, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Ralph Edward and Beatrice Faye Grazier Childs. He grew up in Kansas City, graduating in 1970 from Argentine High School.

He and Elaine Cannon were married Feb. 28, 1981, in Osawatomie. They lived in Argentine before moving to Turner, Kan., in 1986 and then to Osawatomie in 1996. They became the parents of two daughters.

He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a switchman from 1970 until becoming disabled in 1996.

His memberships included the Fair Haven Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan.

Those preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, David.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Childs, of the home; two daughters, Amy Lynn Arnold of La Cygne and Emily Ann Manning of Osawatomie; a brother, Daniel Childs of Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Christine Crowder and Kathy Burnett, both of Kansas City, Kan.; and six grandchildren.

Services were Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Beagle Cemetery. Pallbearers were Glen Cannon, Daniel Childs, Lee Emery, Matt Emery, Shane Hall and David Childs. Honorary pallbearers were John Cannon, Brian Arnold, Blake VanDonsel, Clint Childs, Brandon Arnold, Jacob Arnold and Chad Smithhisler.

Memorials may be made to the Steven Childs Hillsdale Wildlife Park Memorial.
