Stella May Bolen
Nov. 30, 1920 - Dec. 29, 2005

Stella May Bolen, 85, longtime resident of Beagle, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola.

Born Nov. 30, 1920, in La Cygne, she was the ninth of the 10 children of Phillip Henry and Mary Alice Pannell Thompson. She attended Fairview School at La Cygne and Mound Creek country school southwest of Beagle.

On April 24, 1941, she and Virgil Kenneth Bolen were married in Kansas City, Kan. They lived there for two years before moving to Beagle. After the death of her husband on March 17, 1994, Mrs. Bolen moved to Burlington to live with a niece for about four years. In the late 1990s, she moved to Osawatomie, where she lived with another niece until entering the nursing home two years ago.

During the time her husband served with the U.S. Army in World War II, she did laundry for the Army in Cheyenne, Wyo. Mrs. Bolen was employed at Osawatomie State Hospital from 1962 to 1975.

Mrs. Bolen attended Beagle United Methodist Church and was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers.

Others preceding her in death include four brothers and five sisters.

While she and her husband did not have any children, they helped raise their nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her niece, Fenevia Lyons, of the home in Osawatomie.

Graveside services were Tuesday in the Mound Creek Cemetery southwest of Beagle.

Memorials may be given to the Paralyzed Veterans in care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Louis J.Carter
Dec. 31, 1934 - Dec. 27, 2005

Louis J. Carter, 70, Rantoul, a former Paola and Fontana resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Olathe Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 31, 1934, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Hazel Carter. He was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Carter, in Paola. He attended Paola schools. He also lived in Fontana and Gardner before moving to Rantoul in 1987.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He and Dorothy Seck were married Oct. 31, 1953, in Louisburg. They later divorced. He married Wava Wyatt Schwab on Sept. 8, 1978, in Miami, Okla.

Mr. Carter was a truck driver before retiring in 1997. He was previously employed by Trans Am of Olathe, Yellow Freight of Lenexa, Bone's Transportation, Watt's Transportation and Penny's Ready Mix, all of Ottawa.

In his younger years, he was a well known race car driver at the Miami County Raceway.

He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2673 of Paola.

A brother, Roy Geiger, was among those preceding him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Wava Carter of the home; two daughters, Cyndi Carter and Robin Van Dyne, both of Independence, Kan.; three sons, David Carter of Breckenridge, Minn., Raylin Carter of Paola and Tyler Carter of Rantoul; two stepdaughters, Lori Horan of Leavenworth, Kan., and Kathy Feighner of Lane; a stepson, Brian Schwab of Rantoul; and numerous grandchildren.

Mr. Carter has been cremated. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.

The family suggests contributions to the Louis J. Carter Memorial Fund in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa, KS 66067.

Harold Eugene Farris
June 10, 1953 - Dec. 6, 2005

Harold Eugene Farris, 52, San Diego, Calif., formerly of Osawatomie, was found dead Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, in his home.

He was found by a co-worker who went to his home after Mr. Farris did not come to work or call in.

Known as "Pinky," he was born June 10, 1953, in Paola, the son of Harold and Ruth Farris. He attended school in Osawatomie and was a 1971 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

After graduating, he moved to Klamath Falls, Ore., and joined the U.S. Navy, where he remained for 22 years.

He was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Osawatomie.

He met and married Vivian Stamey while living in California. She preceded him in death Sept. 23, 1998.

Survivors include his father, Harold Farris of Arkansas; his mother, Ruth Farris Doublin of Wickliffe, Ky.; his stepfather Bailey Doublin; a brother, Richard Farris of McClure, Ill.; four half sisters, Carol Paine of Olathe, Leona Snyder of Carl Junction, Mo., Connie Deffenbaugh of Lenexa and Jean Lile of Parker; a half brother, Leslie Farris of Osawatomie; and two stepchildren, John Stamey and Donna Stamey, both of California.

Mr. Farris was cremated, and his ashes will be placed with his wife's remains. No services are planned.

JoAnn Facteau
Feb. 20, 1953 - Dec. 27, 2005

JoAnn Facteau, 52, longtime Paola resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

She was born Feb. 20, 1953, in Paola, the daughter of James and Lillian Nadine Achey Pearce.

She married Ron Facteau on Jan. 12, 1981, in Paola.

Mrs. Facteau worked as a certified nurse's aide for 11 years at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Olathe and then went to work at North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola.

She enjoyed doing puzzles.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Lloyd Pearce and Gary Pearce, and a grandson, Mike Casida III.

Survivors include her husband, Ron Facteau of Paola; a daughter, Tilisha Groshong of Drexel, Mo.; two sons, Michael Casida Jr. of Paola and Christopher Casida of Drexel; four brothers, Michael Pearce and Lenny Pearce, both of Osawatomie, Randy Pearce of Paola and Bruce Pearce of Moberly, Mo.; four sisters, Mary Jane Dillard and Debbie Brewer, both of Paola, Nancy Pearce of Olathe and Tina McKinley of Drexel, and 13 grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Paola Cemetery.

Memorials my be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

Fred W. Ahring Sr.
March 1, 1915 - MARCH 18, 2006

Fred W. Ahring, 91, Garnett, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, in Life Care Center of Burlington.

He was born March 1, 1915, in Culver, Kan., the son of Louis H. and Dora Gardner Ahring. He grew up in the Culver area before moving to the Garnett area in 1938. He was a farmer, carpenter and custom wheat harvester.

He and Marjorie Bartlett were married June 23, 1938, in Iola.

In his younger days, he enjoyed coon hunting. He always looked forward to seeing his many customers during wheat harvest. He and his wife helped many young people by giving them a job on the harvest crew.

Those preceding him in death included two sons, Bob Ahring, who died Nov. 8, 2004, and Fred Ahring Jr., who died Jan. 17, 2006; a brother, Alvin Ahring; and a granddaughter, Tracy Ahring, who died Oct. 12, 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Ahring of Garnett; a son, Rick Ahring of Parker; two daughters, Janice Beeman of San Diego, Calif., and Bonnie Messenger of Wellsville; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church in Garnett. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Memorials may be made to the church in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

Duard Elgin Cox
Dec. 29, 1926 - MARCH 13, 2006

Duard Elgin Cox, 79, Blue Mound, died Monday, March 13, 2006, in the Veterans Medical Center in Topeka.

The son of Clifford and Ruby Zimmerman Cox, he was born Dec. 29, 1926, in Blue Mound. After graduating in 1944 from Mound City High School, he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He and Jane Marie Mulkey were married Jan. 30, 1955, in the Federated Church of Mound City.

He was a board member of Anderson County Rural Water District No. 1 and a past director of Farmers State Bank. His memberships included the Federated Church of Blue Mound, Gideons International and Hewitt-New Post of the American Legion in Mound City.

Those preceding him in death included two brothers, Merle Cox and Worland Cox, and a sister, Verna Agatha, who died in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Cox of the home; two sons, Bruce Cox and Brent Cox, both of Blue Mound; and a brother, Waldon Cox of Pleasanton.

Services were Thursday in the Federated Church of Blue Mound. Burial was in Sunny Slope Cemetery in Blue Mound.

Memorials may be made to the church or the VA Hospital activity fund in care of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, KS 66056.
