Fern A. Millington
Nov. 19, 1921 - May 16, 2006

Fern A. Millington, 84, Garnett, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, in Richmond Health Care and Rehabilitation.

She was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Centerville, the daughter of Harry and Ethel Kline. She and Floyd Millington were married Feb. 10, 1975, in Garnett. Mrs. Millington was a homemaker in her own home.

Those preceding her in death included her husband, who died Nov. 30, 1987.

Survivors included two nieces, Marilyn Staley and Doris Randel, both of Williamsburg, Kan., and two nephews, Frank Randel of Coffeyville, Kan., and Gene Cunningham of Williamsburg.

Memorial services were Monday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Garnett Public Library or Midland Hospice in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66064.

Veda F. Pennington
May 1, 1923 - May 16, 2006

Veda F. Pennington, 83, Overland Park, a former Parker resident, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, in Manor Care Skilled Nursing in Overland Park.

She was born May 1, 1923, and was the youngest of the three children of Urless and Leona Wineland. She grew up in the rural Parker community and graduated in 1940 from the Parker Rural High School.

She married Jimmy Morrison in 1941 in Amarillo, Texas, where they made their home in Amarillo. He was killed in World War II.

In the mid 1940s she married James William Preston Pennington in Kansas City, Mo. They became the parents of one son. Her husband preceded her in death April 30, 1976.

Mrs. Pennington worked for Western Union for a short time. She also worked as a teacher's aide from 1968 until 1988 in the Shawnee Mission School system.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, both in Overland Park, the Grantioch Homeowners Association and the Gold Star Wives Club.

Others preceding her in death include her son, James Randal Pennington, who died Feb. 4 of this year, and her two sisters, Pearl Wineland Crull and Velma Wineland Boyd.

Graveside services were Friday in Mound Creek Cemetery under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home of Osawatomie.

Memorials have been established to the Parker Community Historical Society, P. O. Box 173, Parker, KS 66072.

William Thomas Cross, 81, Smithville, Mo., the father of Carol A. Glover of Paola and Lisa J. Rickey of Osawatomie, died May 15, 2006.

Ray Eugene Shockey, 64, Trenton, Mo., the father of Sherri Meaux of Paola, died May 18, 2006.

Louise Stocks
Louise Stocks, 86, Overland Park, the stepmother of Herman W. Stocks of Paola, died May 19, 2006.

Shirley Marciniak
Shirley Marciniak, 67, Shawnee, the mother of Philip Marciniak of Paola, died May 20, 2006.

Margaret Francis Smith
Margaret Francis Smith, 66, El Dorado Springs, Mo., the mother of Jo Shay of Paola, died May 11, 2006.

Paul Kenneth Foote
Paul Kenneth Foote, 91, Hume, Mo., the brother of Maxine Dixon of Pleasanton, died May 16, 2006 in Mercy Health Care in Fort Scott.

Jackie Martinez
Jackie Martinez, 67, Hutchinson, the brother-in-law of Jean and Richard Alonzo of Osawatomie, died May 19, 2006 in a Kansas City hospital. Survivors include his wife, Cleota Martinez, and two children.

Pauline Gunnels Owings
Pauline Gunnels Owings, 87, Drexel, Mo., died Sunday, May 14, 2006. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m today at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Merwin Christian Church in Merwin, Mo. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery in Drexel. Memorials may be made to the church.

Melody Loretta Fennel-Allen
Oct. 8, 1972 - June 18, 2006

Melody Loretta Fennel-Allen, 33, Olathe, a former Osawatomie resident, died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack in Ozark, Ala., on Sunday, June 18, 2006.

She was born Oct. 8, 1972, in Paola, the daughter of Vernon Lee Fennel Sr. and Sandra Ann Collingwood-Fennel. She was raised in Osawatomie and graduated in 1990 from Osawatomie High School.

She received her associates degree in accounting in 1997 from Fort Scott Community College. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was honored to be on the Dean's List throughout her college years.

She lived in Osawatomie before making her home in Olathe with her mother, Sandra; her daughter, Sabrina; and companion, Jerry Davenport.

She enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, making holiday dinners, sports, swimming and hanging out with friends. She was a dedicated mother and enjoyed every minute she was able to spend with her children.

Preceding her in death were a brother, Vernon Fennel Jr.; a sister, Susan Fennel; and her grandparents, Merle and Lucy Rigg Collingwood and Burley and Daisy Fennel.

Survivors include her companion, Jerry Davenport of Olathe; two daughters, Shelby Allen of Osawatomie and Sabrina Fennel of the home; her mother, Sandra Fennel of Olathe; her father, Vernon Fennel Sr. of Lane; a brother, Mark Fennel of Paola; and a sister, Carla Duncan of Bucklin, Mo.

Graveside services were Monday in the Osawatomie Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Melody Fennel- Allen Memorial Fund in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

Linda Catherine Cholak
March 15, 1948 - June 23, 2006

Linda Catherine Cholak, 58, Paola, a former resident of Osawatomie and Chicago, Ill., died Friday, June 23, 2006, in her home.

Born March 15, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., she was the oldest of the nine children of Irvin Lee and Carmelita Mary Catherine Mersman Osborn. She attended schools in Greeley and Osawatomie, graduating in 1966 from Osawatomie High School. She went on to Pittsburg State University and then continued her education at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Mo.

She worked in the insurance industry and worked for Fred Embry Insurance Co. from 1968 until the early 1970s. From the mid 1970s she worked for R.B. Jones Insurance and then Alexander and Alexander. In 1989 she transferred to the Denver office and in 1991 to Chicago where she worked for CNA Insurance from 1993 until 1995. At that time she went to work for the General Council on Finance and Administration of the United Methodist Church in Evanston, Ill. She retired from the church as risk manager in early 2005.

In March 2005 she moved from Chicago to Paola to live by the lake and be closer to her family. In April 2005 she was diagnosed with ALS.

She and Frank Damien Cholak were married Nov. 22, 1971, in Independence, Mo. They became the parents of one son before their marriage ended in divorce in 1985.

Mrs. Cholak was known as a collector and loved to entertain friends and family. She was also a world traveler, having been in all but three of the 50 states and many continents. She enjoyed shopping, watching movies, seeing the sun set and most of all spending time with her grandson.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Paola. She was a member of the Society of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters where she served as National Officers-Sections governor, regional vice president and national director as well as on numerous committees and task forces. She was a member of the Harry J. Loman Foundation where she was a board member.

Those preceding her in death were her father and a sister, Deborah Osborn.

Survivors include her son, Anthony Cholak of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; her mother, Carmelita Osborn of Garnett; four brothers, John Osborn of Greeley, Terry Osborn of Waverly, Kan., Frank Osborn of Lane and Bob Osborn of Paola; three sisters, Cleo Hansen of Lenexa, Betty Keim of Bartlesville, Okla., and Roberta LaCerte of Topeka; and one grandson.

Services were Tuesday in the church, followed by burial in St. Boniface Cemetery in Scipio, Kan. Pallbearers were Anthony Cholak, Doug Griffith, Tom Garland, John McAhan, John Slackmiller and Matt Herrick.

Memorials are to the ALS Association and may be sent in care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.

Mae Amanda Cook
Oct. 30, 1911 - June 20, 2006

Mae Amanda Cook, 94, Garnett, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, in Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care in Garnett. She had been a resident there since December 2003 when she was injured in a fall.

She was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Neodesha, Kan., the daughter of Charley Thomas and Nellie Mac Martin Cass. She and George Franklin Croan were married Sept. 26, 1933. They became parents of five children. Mr. Croan died May 28, 1958.

She and Ralph Earnest Cook, a former Osawatomie resident, were married May 8, 1963, in Miami, Okla. They lived on the Cook family farm east of Garnett. After his death on Dec. 18, 1986, she moved to Parkside Place in Garnett and then to Lawrence in 1999 to live with a daughter, Nellane Stussic, until falling and entering long term care.

Mrs. Cook worked as a nurses' aide for more than 30 years, loved to paint and was a prolific reader. She was a longtime member of the JJJ Card Club of Garnett.

Others preceding her in death were two infant children; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Survivors include her three children, Beverly King of Humboldt, Kan., George Croan of Garnett and Nellane Stussic of Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care or Midland Hospice in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.
