Roy DeVaughn Cook
May 10, 1922 - June 24, 2006

Roy DeVaughn Cook, 84, Pleasanton, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, in Country View Nursing Home in Prescott.

Mr. Cook owned and operated Cook's TV Center in Pleasanton for more than 50 years.

He was born May 10, 1922, in Pleasanton, the son of Roy and Ethel King Cook. He and Julia Spence were married Sept. 4, 1949, in Osawatomie.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.

His memberships included the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

An infant sister was among those preceding him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Cook of Pleasanton; a daughter, Dianna Smith of La Habra Heights, Calif.; a son, Greg Cook of Claremore, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Pleasanton Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasanton Cemetery Association or the nursing home activity fund in care of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, P.O. Box 525, Pleasanton, KS 66075.

William T. Funk Jr.
July 29, 1920 - June 20, 2006

William T. Funk Jr., 85, Mound City, formerly of Good-rich, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, in Olathe Medical Center.

He was born July 29, 1920, just north of the Cadmus Cemetery on Kansas Highway 7. He was the third of the four children of William T. and Nellie G. Brand Funk. He attended Twin Springs country school east of Cadmus and was a 1938 graduate of Parker Rural High School. He farmed for a time after graduating.

He then went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in Portland, Ore. He worked in the stone department until becoming a brakeman in 1941.

On Dec. 28, 1940, he married Ruth Vernell Byerley in Butler, Mo.

Mr. Funk, who was known as "Bill," served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He served in the Hawaiian Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, Virgin Islands and Palau Islands. He spent 30 days on Iwo Jima during the invasion of the island. He was honorably discharged April 11, 1946.

Mr. and Mrs. Funk moved to their farm south of Goodrich in 1946 where they remained until moving to Mound City in 1995.

He was a life member of Greeley Memorial Post No. 6887 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as district commander from 1978 through 1979 in the Second District. He was a Methodist and had attended the Methodist church in Goodrich. His hobbies included playing cards and fishing.

Those preceding him in death included his wife, who died March 19, 1997; a brother, Merlin Funk; a sister, Marietta Funk.

Survivors include a brother, Calvin Funk of Fort Scott; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and his companion, Jeane Baker of the home.

Graveside services with military honors were Saturday in Goodrich Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Akes, Gary Akes, Matt Akes, James Akes, Larry Kinder and Steve Kinder.

Memorials are to Greeley Memorial Post No. 6887 in care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.

Robert Burkhardt
Nov. 22, 1942 - July 7, 2006

Robert Burkhardt, 63, died Friday, July 7, 2006, in his home in Maple Hill, Kan., after a short illness suffering with pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with the disease in June.

He was born Nov. 22, 1942, in Abilene, Kan., the son of Alvin and Lydia Wassinger Burkhardt. He grew up in the Abilene and Chapman, Kan., areas and was a 1960 graduate of the high school in Chapman. He then served three years active duty with the U.S. Navy.

He and Marlyn Katzer of Greeley were married March 29, 1973.

Mr. Burkhardt joined the Topeka Police Department in 1971 and retired as a detective sergeant from that department in April 1996 with 25 years of service. For the past several years he worked as a security guard for Commerce Bank and Trust at one of its Topeka locations.

His hobbies were traveling in his recreational vehicle and fishing. He was an avid Kansas State University and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

His father preceded him in death in 1988.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Randy Burkhardt of Topeka; a daughter, Kristine Noland of Jamestown, Tenn.; his mother of Hays, Kan.; a brother, Ron Burkhardt of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Debbie, of Salina; and four grandchildren.

Services were Monday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery in Greeley.

Memorials may be made to Midland Hospice of Topeka in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS

Rebecca K. DeGruson
Feb. 18, 1947 - June 29, 2006

Rebecca K. DeGruson, 59, a former La Cygne resident, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, in her home in Pittsburg.

She was born Feb. 18, 1947, in Hart, Mich., the daughter of Max E. and Anna Mae Bryant Wellman.

She married Jerry DeGruson in 1967. They later moved to La Cygne, where they lived for 23 years. They spent a short time in Raton, N.M., and moved back to Pittsburg 10 years ago.

Mrs. DeGruson was a former member of the New Life Baptist Church of La Cygne.

A son, Todd Eugene DeGruson, died in 1970.

Those surviving are her husband, Jerry DeGruson of the home; two daughters, Leanna Marie Schmidt of Wylie, Texas, and Paula Kay Holt of Capaldo, Kan.; eight brothers, Charles E. Wellman, Roy Wellman, Robert Phillips, Randy Phillips, Kelly Phillips, Brian Phillips and Steven Phillips, all of the Leavenworth and Atchison areas, and Bill Phillips of Michigan; three sisters, Viola Mae Welsinger, Kathy Laun and Alicia Combs, all of Leavenworth; and four grandchildren.

Services were July 1 at Brenner Mortuary and burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Pittsburg.

The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.

Cheryl P. Erwin
Oct. 16, 1941 - July 6, 2006

Cheryl P. Erwin, 64, Parker, died Thursday, July 6,2006, in Olathe Medical Center.

Born Oct. 16, 1941, in Linn County near Parker, she was the daughter of Rolla Everett and Helen A. McCarty Hampton. She was a 1959 graduate of Parker Rural High School.

On April 15, 1961, she and Edward W. Erwin were married in Wichita. During her husband's 30-year career with the U.S. Navy, they lived from coast to coast and border to border. In 1981, they retired to Parker. Mr. Erwin died Sept. 17, 2000.

Mrs. Erwin spent her entire working life as an office worker. During a 20-year period, she worked in various offices and locations.

She was a member of the Parker United Methodist Church, the Parker Rural High School Alumni and Parker Community Historical Society, where she was a lifetime member.

Others preceding her in death were her father; an infant son, Daniel Everett Erwin; and a brother, Philip A. Hampton Sr.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Helen and Charles O. Haverfield of Parker; a brother, Charles M. Hampton Sr. of Parker; two sisters, Marilyn J. Rhoades of the home and Rolleen D. Stites of La Cygne; three stepbrothers, Charles L. Haverfield of Parker, and Robert Haverfield and Steve Haverfield, both of Yakima, Wash.; her foster daughter, Linda Walsh of Mound City; two foster grandchildren; and five foster great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday in the church with burial in Highland Cemetery south of Parker. Pallbearers were Rex Stites, Philip Hampton Jr., David Sheets, Ronald Hampton, Greg Hampton, Justin Sheets, Duane Hampton, James Hampton and Chuck Hampton Jr., all nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Parker Community Historical Society in care of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, P.O. Box 430, Osawatomie, KS 66064.

Jennifer Lee Herman
Jan. 2, 1978 - July 5, 2006

Jennifer Lee Herman, 28, Paola, a former Osawatomie area resident, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in her home.

Born Jan. 2, 1978, in Kansas City, Kan., her parents were Joseph and Mary Kay Kane Herman. She grew up southwest of Osawatomie in Mound Township and was a 1996 graduate of Prairie View High School.

She was currently employed as a Web page designer and was known for her knowledge of computers.

She enjoyed reading, watching movies, spending time on the family farm, animals, especially her cat Kitty, being with her family and cooking chicken enchiladas. She also enjoyed caring for the elderly.

Survivors include her parents of Osawatomie, and three sisters, Kathy Webb of Osawatomie, Diane Nuzum of Wichita and Mary Elizabeth Wilson of Osawatomie.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 500 Parker Ave., Osawatomie.

Masses may be made in her name to the church in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.
