Frank S. Johnson
Aug. 7, 1933 - July 2, 2006
Frank S. Johnson, 72, Garnett, formerly of the Kansas City area, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, in his home.
The son of Frank and Gladys Glassborn Johnson, he was born Aug. 7, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., where he lived most of his life until moving to Garnett in 1991.
Mr. Johnson was a stone mason and bricklayer, working many years for John Verstraight Masonry. He was known as an excellent mason and worked on smaller projects as long as his health allowed.
He enjoyed fishing and oil painting, but his greatest joy was his grandchildren.
Those preceding him in death included a brother, Donald Johnson, and a sister, Shirley Konkel.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda King Johnson of the home; two sons, Ronnie Sheffield of Mims, Fla., and Larry Sheffield of Coco, Fla.; two daughters, Michelle Nelson of El Dorado Springs, Mo., and Teresa Chambers of Garnett; four brothers, John Johnson of Bonner Springs, Bob Johnson of Smithville, Mo., and Denny Johnson and Wayne Johnson, both of Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Helen Johnson of Arizona, Nancy Feurgonson of Eldorado, Mo., and Dianne West of Kansas City, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Cremation followed.
Russell Lee Berry
July 21, 1948 - July 10, 2006
Russell Lee Berry, 57, Osawatomie, died Monday, July 10, 2006, in Olathe Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1948, in Osawatomie, he was the son of Jesse and Margaret Jane Reed Berry. He grew up in Osawatomie where he attended school, graduating in 1968 from Osawatomie High School. He then attended Fort Scott Community College on a scholarship.
Mr. Berry was employed by the Miami County Highway Department on the road and bridge crew. He had also worked as an aide at the Osawatomie State Hospital and in the water plant for the city of Osawatomie.
He was a member of the Ebeneezer Baptist Church in Osawatomie.
Those preceding him in death included his parents; a brother, James Berry; and a sister, Janet Bandy.
Survivors include two sons, Troy Walker of Kansas City, Mo., and Russell Berry Jr. of Overland Park; two brothers, Larry Joe Berry of Rochester, N.Y., and Jackie Berry of Osawatomie; two sisters, Judith Thompkins of Osawatomie and Joyce Spruill of Lenexa; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Dorothy D. Deel
Oct. 1, 1930 - July 10, 2006
Dorothy D. Deel, 75, Drexel, Mo., died Monday, July 10, 2006.
She was born Oct. 1, 1930, in Jingo, Kan., the daughter of Ray and Bessie Virgin Driskell. After the death of her father, her mother married Glen Miller.
She graduated in 1948 from Drexel High School and attended Ursuline College in Paola, receiving her teaching degree. She then taught schools in Miami and Linn counties.
She married to Wayne Deel in May 1950.
Mrs. Deel retired from J.C. Penney Catalog Center in 1992.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Deel of the home; three daughters, Vicki Hotsenpiller of Louisburg, Dixie Fink of Drexel and Debbie Shannon of Merwin, Mo.; two sons, Daryl Deel of Joplin, Mo., and Dennis Deel of Drexel; five sisters, Mabel Hill and Norma Meador, both of Belton, Mo., Virginia Glaze and Marilyn Jenkins, both of Paola, and Gerry Dalyrmple of Drexel; four brothers, Walter Miller of Belton, Clifford Driskell of Independence, Mo., Gene Miller of Drexel and Jack Miller of Oskya, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Visitation was Thursday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Drexel, Mo., followed by graveside services in Sharon Cemetery
near Drexel.

The Rev. Fergus Lickteig
Nov. 27, 1928 - July 8, 2006
The Rev. Fergus Lickteig, 77, Olathe, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, in Villa St. Francis Nursing Home in Olathe.
He was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Greeley, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Wolken Lickteig.
After attending St. John's School in Greeley, he entered in September 1944 the Carmelite Order at Mt. Carmel Prep Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He professed his simple vows in the Carmelite Novitiate in New Baltimore, Pa., on Aug. 22, 1949, and his solemn vows on Aug. 22, 1952, in Whitefriars Hall in Washington, D.C.
He was ordained a priest in Kansas City, Kan., on May 28, 1955. He obtained a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., and a master of arts degree in education from the University of Chicago. He then did graduate work at the University of Houston; Loyola University in New Orleans; and the Catholic University of American in Washington, D.C.
After his ordination, he taught Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, Ill.; DeSales High School in Louisville, Ky.; Mt. Carmel High School in Houston, Texas; and Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton, Mass.
In 1963 he was appointed seminary rector. He also served as principal at Carmel High School in Mundelein, Ill., and Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif. He had served as the director of Carmel Retreat in Mahwah, N.J., director of on-going formation for his Province and director of the Carmelite Novice in Middletown, N.Y.
He returned to Kansas in 1997 to served as Parochial Vicar of Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish in Leavenworth until his retirement in early 2001.
Those preceding him in death included two brothers, Raymond Lickteig and Alfred Lickteig, and three sisters, Agatha Myers, Beatrice Gilner and Irma Miller.
Survivors include three brothers, Dominic Lickteig of Defiance, Iowa, Bernard Lickteig of Houston and Francis Lickteig of Shawnee; and a sister, Elizabeth Gellhaus of Greeley.
A Mass of Christian burial was Friday in St. John's Baptist Church in Greeley. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery
in Scipio, Kan. Services were held Thursday in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leavenworth.

Elvis Harrison Malone
July 7, 1934 - July 11, 2006
Elvis Harrison Malone, 72, longtime resident of rural Paola, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, in Olathe Medical Center.
"Bud," as he was known, was born July 7, 1934, in Oregon County, Mo., the son of Herschel and Ardith Malone. He grew up in the Thayer area, attended Two Mile Grade School and graduated from high school in Koshkonong, Mo.
Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Hutchinson from 1952 until 1954.
While in Hutchinson, he met Betty J. Gisel and they were married Sept. 27, 1954, in Sunflower, Kan. They became the parents of five children. They lived in Hutchinson, Baldwin City and Chapman until making their home in rural Paola, for the past 40 years.
Mr. Malone worked for Kansas State University in his early years and traveled all over Kansas to dairy farms. While working for the university in artificial dairy insemination, he was able to receive his associates degree. Most of his life was spent working as a carpenter.
He was a member of Local No. 714 of the Carpenters Union, American Legion and Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed family vacations. While he and his wife were raising their children, they made it a point to take a vacation every year. He also enjoyed training horses, family gatherings, all the big Sunday dinners and playing and listening to music.
Three brothers and a sister were among those preceding him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Malone of the home; three daughters, Diane Malone of Windsor, Mo., and Peggy Scherman and Pat Sullivan, both of Paola; two sons, Jim Malone of Paola and John Malone of Osawatomie; two sisters, Bettie Kiell of Lead Hill, Ark., and Margaret Niedzwiedz of Osawatomie; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Mr. Malone was cremated.

Mabel Louise Rausch
Feb. 12, 1918 - July 14, 2006
Mabel Louise Rausch, 88, longtime Paola resident, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Johnson County, Kan., the daughter of Harry and Hettie Shreve Donham. She grew up on a farm in the Stilwell area and graduated from school in Stanley. After high school she lived in the Olathe area and was employed at a drug store.
She married Loris Rausch on March 11, 1941, in Paola. They became the parents of three children. After their marriage they lived in the Olathe area before moving to a farm west of Paola in 1961, where they farmed for many years.
Besides helping her husband on the family farm, she worked at the former Miami County Hospital in Paola. After her husband's death in 1984, she continued to live on the farm until 1995 when she moved into Paola.
Mrs. Rausch was a member of the Spring Ridge Ladies Aid.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed helping others in a time of need.
Others preceding her in death are a brother, Raymond Donham; a sister, Marjorie Hughes; and two great grandchildren, Christian Weatherbie and Ethan Weatherbie.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Prothe of Paola; two sons, Vernon Rausch of Paola and Dale Rausch of Greeley; one sister, Betty Townley of Blue Springs, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola and burial in Pleasant Valley Cemetery
in Stanley.
