James A. Blackwell
(June 8, 1926 - June 3, 2002)
James A. Blackwell, 75, Springfield, Mo., a former Osawatomie resident, died Monday, June 3, 2002.
He was born June 8, 1926, in Manes, Mo., the son of Joseph Warren and Ada Elizabeth Myers Blackwell.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Blackwell was a loan officer with M&R Loan Co. in Springfield.
He and his wife, Ruth Arline Barker Blackwell, made their home with their children in Osawatomie during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Wichita lodge since October 1952.
A sister, Lillie Benham, was among those preceding him in death.
Survivors include his wife of Springfield; two daughters, Carolyn Kemp of Billings, Mo., and Connie Buchholtz of Springfield; a sister, Mary Stevens of Abilene, Texas; and one grandson.
Services were June 7 in Walnut Lawn DeGraffenreid-Wood Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial was in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

Wilbur R. Harkins
(June 1, 1952 - June 1, 2002)
Wilbur R. Harkins, 50, Wichita, a former resident of the Lane area, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, near El Dorado, Kan., as a result of a vehicle accident.
He was born June 1, 1952, in Wichita, the son of Dennis M. and Harriet Ilo Carter Harkins. He grew up in the Lane area. He graduated from Emporia High School in 1970.
He and Sharyl Scheck were married in April 1980 in Emporia. They were later divorced.
He lived in the Emporia area from 1964 until moving to Wichita in 1986.
Mr. Harkins was employed as an engine installer for Midwest Engine Exchange in Wichita.
His father and a stepson, Scott Chestnut, preceded him in death.
Surviving are a son, David Joe Harkins of Emporia; a daughter, Angie Matthews of Topeka; his mother, Harriet Ilo Harkins of Ottawa; two stepsons, Adam Chestnut of Emporia and Klenton Chestnut of Melvern, Kan.; a stepdaughter, Mellissa Metcalfe of Wilsey, Kan.; a sister, Dixie Zahrowski of Gillette, Wyo.; seven brothers, Dennis Harkins of Ottawa, Roger Harkins of Osage City, Kan., Valerian Harkins of Oroville, Calif., Henry Harkins of Garden Plain, Kan., Phillip Harkins of Longview, Texas, Davy Harkins of El Dorado and Victor Harkins of Wichita; three grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.
Services were June 5 in the Princeton Cemetery.
Virgil Keith Miller
(Aug. 28, 1953 - Aug. 8, 2002)
Virgil Keith Miller, 48, Blue Mound, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Blue Mound.
He was born Aug. 28, 1953, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Keith and Venita Bruner Miller. After graduating from Crest High School in Colony, Kan., he attended Allen County Community College and graduated from Kansas State University.
He was a rancher and also operated an agriculture spray business.
He and Nancy Bain were married Feb. 21, 1976.
Mr. Miller was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association and attended the Wall Street Christian Church.
Those preceding him in death included an infant sister, Venita Marie.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Miller of Blue Mound; his parents of Kincaid, Kan.; a son, Jeffrey Keith Miller of Blue Mound; two daughters, Kristen Lee and Danielle Kay Miller, both of Blue Mound; a brother, Jim Miller of Garnett; and two sisters, Nancy Ann McCullough of Chilhowee, Mo., and Marita Meech of Fort Scott.
Services were Monday at the church. Burial was at the Sunny Slope Cemetery
in Blue Mound. Arrangements were made by Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City.
Memorials may be made to the Kansas State High School Rodeo Association in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, KS 66056.
Edward Everett Kellogg
(Nov. 28, 1932 - Aug. 3, 2002)
Edward Everett Kellogg, 69, Osawatomie, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Olathe Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Osawatomie, the oldest of the four children of James E. and Amelia Capelle Kellogg. He grew up in Osawatomie and graduated in 1950 from Osawatomie High School.
Mr. Kellogg was a yard clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
He entered the U.S. Army Reserves in October 1953 and served for two years. He then entered the U.S. Navy Reserves in May 1956 and served two years. He was in the U.S. Air Force Reserves with the rank of master sergeant from June 1960 until June of 1966 and then as a senior master sergeant from June 1966 until June 1976. While in the reserves he worked at the Parsons Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kan., and also as a recruiting officer.
Mr. Kellogg and Helen Conner were married May 21, 1956, in Paola. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children. Their marriage ended in divorce.
He and Shirley Jornes were married in 1970 in Independence, Kan. They had one son, Michael, who died shortly after birth. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1971.
His memberships include Hanlin-Kelly Post 2258 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Hinkle Post No. 204 of the American Legion and Osage Lodge No. 24, A.F.&A.M., all of Osawatomie; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2673 of Paola; Shriners No. 39 in Parsons, Kan.; and Scottish Rite No. 32 in Fort Scott.
Others preceding him in death included his son, Dale Kellogg; his stepfather, Carl Bussell; and a sister, Katheryne.
Survivors include his son, Charles Arthur Kellogg of Billings, Mo.; his daughter, Kathy Rene Miley of Hillsdale; two brothers, Charles Kellogg and Jules Kellogg, both of Rich Hill, Mo.; two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday in the Osawatomie Cemetery
with military honors conducted by a unit from Fort Riley, Kan. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.
Dolores May Husted
(Aug. 18, 1921 - Aug. 8, 2002)
Dolores May Husted, 80, longtime Paola resident, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.
She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in Wilson, Kan., the daughter of Earl and Laura May Lingo Spears. She lived in Lyons and Russell, Kan., as a child and graduated in 1939 from Russell High School.
She and Clifford Husted were married June 30, 1942, in Harrisonville, Mo. They moved to Paola following their marriage. They became the parents of one son. Her husband preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1986.
Mrs. Husted was a homemaker.
She and her husband attended the Osawatomie Southern Baptist Church for several years.
Her hobbies included sewing, crafts, reading and spending time with her family and friends.
Others preceding her in death were a grandson, John Husted; four brothers, Woodrow Spears, Reed Spears, Peter Spears and Dwayne Spears; and two sisters, Maxine and Donna.
Surviving are her son, Ronald Husted of rural Paola; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Monday in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Ruby Juanita Sears

Ruby Juanita Sears, 78, Garnett, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee Mission.
She was born April 25, 1924, in Gentry, Ark., the daughter of Jesse A. and Hazel I. VanFleet Rook. She grew up in the Welda, Kan., area and had lived in Garnett since her marriage to Harold Sears June 27, 1946, in Garnett.
Mrs. Sears was a homemaker and was a child-care provider for infants in her home.
Her memberships included the First United Methodist Church in Garnett and T.O.P.S.
Those preceding her in death include her husband, Harold Sears, who died in 1983; two brothers, Elmer Rook and John F. Rook; and a sister, Marjorie Finkenbinder.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Sears of Garnett and Randy L. Sears of Overland Park; a sister, Lola Belle Adams of Mound City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett, followed by burial in Garnett Cemetery.
