Eugenia Ann Gansen
(May 22, 1943 - March 7, 2003)

Eugenia Ann Gansen, 59, Parker, died Friday, March 7, 2003, in Olathe Medical Center.

"Gena,' as she was known by her family and friends, was born May 22, 1943, in Garnett, a daughter of Donald Dale and Barbara Jean Adams Meeker. When she was a child, the family moved to Ottawa, where she attended grade school and Ottawa High School, graduating in 1961.

Following high school, she was employed at Osawatomie State Hospital before moving to California. She worked for Bell Flower Medical Center as a surgical technician for three years before moving back to the La Cygne and Parker areas.

She was married in 1965 in California and became the mother of two children.

She received a bachelor's degree from Ottawa University in 1982. She also attended Johnson County Commumity College for a short time.

She moved to Wichita in 1978 and worked for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services office as an income maintenance officer for several years before retiring in 1998.

Due to health problems, she moved back to Parker in 1999 to live with her sister, Donna Nickell.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa.

She took an active interest in helping children with learning disabilities. One of her last accomplishments was quilting each one of her children and grandchildren a quilt for Christmas. Her other pastimes included crocheting, embroidering, watching birds, playing with her dog and spending time with her family.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, Vince Gansen, and her daughter, Vickie Gansen, both of Wichita; a stepdaughter, Babette Simanson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one other sister, Virginia Joe Hampton of Parker; two brothers, Jay Meeker of Shawnee Mission and Jeff Meeker of Garnett; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

Graveside services were Monday in the Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association or the Kansas Society for Crippled Children in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

Velma J. Hirt
(Jan. 30, 1929 - March 7, 2003)

Velma J. Hirt, 74, of Harris, Kan., died Friday, March 7, 2003, in Manor Nursing Home in Ottawa.

She was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Scipio, Kan., the daughter of Albert and Mary Pickert Rockers. She was a 1946 graduate of Garnett High School.

She and Wayne L. Hirt were married April 6, 1948, and she was a homemaker. She had lived near Harris since 1948.

Mrs. Hirt was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Emerald, Kan. She was a member of the Altar Society, a CCD teacher and worked in the summer school program in the church.

Those preceding her in death were her husband, who died April 2, 1988, and a brother, Merle Rockers.

Survivors include five sons, Wayne Hirt of Ottawa, Dude Hirt of Emporia, Terry Hirt of Garnett, Charlie Hirt of Richmond and Mike Hirt of Waverly, Kan.; a daughter, Lori Ann Bitts of Waverly; a sister, Dorothy Foltz of Overland Park; 14 grandchildren; and five grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday in the church, followed by burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association for liver disease research in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

Frank L. Fritz
(Jan. 24, 1941 - March 6, 2003)

Frank L. Fritz, 62, Garnett, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Jan. 24, 1941, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of Joseph Fritz Sr. and Lucille Preston Fritz. He grew up in Kansas City, Kan., and was a 1959 graduate of Turner High School.

Mr. Fritz first moved to Garnett in 1971. He then lived in Weston, Mo., from 1981 to 1984, and in Dallas, Texas, from 1984 to 1994, when he moved back to Garnett.

He was a fleet manager for Trans Am Trucking in Olathe.

On July 9, 1960, he and Sharon Elliott were married in Miami, Okla.

Those preceding him in death were his father and his mother, Lucille Fritz Gerber, and a son, Kary Fritz, who died March 18, 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Fritz of Garnett; two sons, Wesley Fritz of Garnett and Scott Fritz of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Joseph Fritz Jr. of Burlington, Kan., and Robert Fritz of Kansas City, Kan.; two stepbrothers, Bud Gerber of Olivet, Kan., and Herman Gerber of Kansas City, Kan.; two stepsisters, Frances Maye Mollett of Kansas City, Kan., and Linda Snavely of Basehor, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Ernest James Douglas
(Feb. 7, 1937 - March 5, 2003)

Ernest James Douglas, 66, Lane, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at his home.

Born Feb. 7, 1937, in Kansas City, Kan., he was the young-est of the four children of Henry Kid and Sara Elizabeth Thomas Douglas. He attend-ed Rosedale High School.

He was known as "Jim" and was a truck driver. He was a member of Teamsters Union No. 41 in Kansas City, Mo. He was forced to retire due to a disability in the mid 1970s.

He and Carol Ann Ruth were married July 3, 1957, in Kansas City, Kan., where they made their home. They became the parents of five children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973.

On Feb. 14, 1978, he and Irene Jeanette Bardezban were married in Kansas City, Mo. They made their home in Osawatomie. They were divorced in 1992.

His pastimes included playing horseshoes and bowling. He was an APA pool player.

Those preceding him in death included a stepson, James Crumby.

Survivors include four sons, Chris Douglas of Osawatomie, Rickey Douglas of Kansas City, Kan., and Kenneth Douglas and James Donald Douglas, both of Basehor, Kan.; a daughter, Karen Jones of Wichita; three stepchildren, Tisa Wimer, Mathew Troy Wimer and Linda Crumby, all of Kansas City, Kan.; a half sister, Linda Douglas of California; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his companion, Betty Fields.

Services were Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Kan.

Mervyn Rae Egbert
(March 15, 1932 - March 5, 2003)

Mervyn Rae Egbert, 70, Pleasanton, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 15, 1932, in Hugo, Colo., a son of Earl Wesley and Anna Louise Davis Egbert.

Mr. Egbert, who was known as "Merv," worked as an electrician with Missouri Public Service at the Sibley Power Plant in Sibley, Mo., for 25 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of Kansas City, Mo.

He and Virginia Farr Jenkins were married Dec. 16, 1990, in Pleasanton.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pleasanton where he served as an elder. He was a former member of the city zoning and planning commission for the city of Pleasanton.

Mr. Egbert served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Those preceding him in death included a brother, Stanley Egbert.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Egbert of the home; his mother, Anna Louise Egbert, a resident of the Prescott Nursing Home; a son, Thomas Michael Egbert of Pleasanton; three daughters, Carolyn Drake of Tulsa, Okla., Sheryl Theiss of Kearney, Mo., and Rebecca Lankenau of Pleasanton; a brother, Steve Egbert of Wichita; a sister, Phyllis Hughes of Walkerton, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton. Burial was in Battlefield Cemetery at Pleasanton.

Memorials may be made to the church in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 525, Pleasanton, KS 66075.

Sister Frances Walker
(April 30, 1911 - April 11, 2003)

Sister Frances Walker, OSU, 91, died Friday, April 11, 2003, in the Ursuline Motherhouse in Paola.

She was born Mary Isabel Walker on April 30, 1911, in Moline, Kan., the daughter of Hugh and Eva Frances Newman Walker.

She was received into the Ursuline community as Sister Mary Frances Hugh on Sept. 11, 1930, and made her final profession of vows on Sept. 12, 1934.

She received a bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1933 from Marymount College in Salina and a master's degree from Kansas State College in Manhattan in 1946.

Sister Frances served on the Ursuline Sisters' executive council from 1956 to 1968. She taught at Ursuline Academy and Ursuline College in Paola from 1934 until the academy closed in 1971, except in 1939 and 1940 when she served at St. John's School in Bartlesville, Okla. After her long tenure at Ursuline Academy, she taught at Job Corps in Excelsior Springs, Mo., for three years.

Returning to Paola, she became the coordinator of Paola Senior Center and helped to establish a transportation program for the needy, Paola Area Wheels of Mercy.

Sister Frances was an active member of the Paola Association for Church Action and for several years directed the PACA food pantry. She also served as coordinator of the Ursuline Retreat Ministry and directed the Ursuline Alumnae Association for several years.

Those preceding her in death include six brothers, Fred Walker, Ernest Walker, Bernard Walker, Edward Walker, Carl Walker and Dallas Walker.

Surviving are a sister, Ruth Walker Palmer of Wichita, and her Ursuline sisters.

The wake service was Sunday in the Ursuline Chapel, where the funeral Mass was celebrated Monday. Burial was in the Ursuline Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Ursuline Sisters of Paola.
