David Lauren Dollar
OCT. 30, 1938 - SEPT. 22, 2005

David Lauren Dollar, 66, Rogersville, Mo., a Paola native, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, following a short illness.

He was born Oct. 30, 1938, in Paola, the son of David Alfred and Gladys Ellen Dollar. He attended Paola schools and graduated in 1956 from Paola High School.

He lived a life of service to his family, his country, his profession and his community, beginning with joining the U.S. Army following his high-school graduation. Following his military service, he enrolled in Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, graduating in 1968. He attended the University of Illinois for his postgraduate studies.

Mr. Dollar began his teaching career at Southwest Missouri State University in 1969, where he taught communication and public relations until his retirement in 1999. He served his department and the university in many capacities throughout his career.

He served his country again in the Missouri National Guard for 20 years, retiring as a command sergeant major. He continued to volunteer his services, counseling military retirees following his retirement.

He married Suzanne Sims on Aug. 26, 1962. They became parents of two children.

He had a unique relationship with each grandchild and made the grandchildren a priority in his life.

Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Dollar; his son, David Christopher Dollar; his daughter, Melissa Anne Gourley; his mother, Gladys Dollar of Paola; two brothers, Don Dollar of Monett, Mo., and Dale Dollar of Paola; and five grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, beginning with a military burial service in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Lake Springfield. A memorial service followed in First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, followed by a celebration of life. Gorman-Scharp Funeral Home directed the arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to the David L. Dollar Scholarship Fund at Missouri State University, Department of Communications, or St. John's Hospicecare.

Carl D. Hoffman
OCT. 14, 1954 - SEPT. 19, 2005

Carl D. Hoffman, 50, Osawatomie, a former Paola resident, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, in the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion/CUH in Aurora, Colo.

Known as "Hop," he was born Oct. 14, 1954, in Garnett, the son of Howard Dewayne and Carolee Smothers Hoffman. He grew up in Miami County and graduated in 1974 from Paola High School.

He married Deanna Norton on Oct. 22, 1993, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Osawatomie. They made their home in Osawatomie.

Mr. Hoffman was employed in the former Pinecrest Haven Nursing Center in Paola and Heritage Manor, now known as Life Care Center of Osawatomie in the maintenance department. His last employment was for three years at the manufacturing plant that made Guidon fiberglass truck covers.

He was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2673 of Paola for many years with children's activities, helping with bingo and participating with the Lakemary Christmas party.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working with woodcrafts, playing pool, watching all sporting events, but most of all, visiting with his friends and family. He also enjoyed helping friends in need, whether it was inviting them for dinner or giving them a place to sleep for the night.

Preceding him in death were his son, Charles Hoffman; his father, Dwayne Hoffman; a brother, Chuck Hoffman; a sister, Donna Hoffman; his stepfather, Eugene O'Brien; and grandparents, Vernon and Rowena Smothers and Eugene O'Brien Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna Hoffman of the home; a daughter, Shelly David of Edgerton; three stepchildren, Brian Spigno of Osawatomie, Maria Faulhaber of Seattle, Wash., and Matthew Anderson of the home; his mother, Carolee O'Brien of Osawatomie; two sisters, Dianna Stultz of Osawatomie and Debbie McQuay of La Cygne; two grandsons; and two stepgranddaughters.

Services were Saturday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lakemary Center in care of the funeral home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

Gloria Alice Land
NOV. 20, 1932 - SEPT. 22, 2005

d Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park after a month-long illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1932, in Garden City, Kan., she was the second of the three children of Marvin Kenneth and Vera Genevieve Smith Shelman. Known as "Gordie," she grew up in Pueblo, Colo., where she graduated from high school in 1950. In the early 1950s she worked as a cook in the Colorado State Hospital.

After moving to Kansas City, Mo., she married Lester Land. They made their home in Kansas City, Mo., and Independence, Mo., and became parents of three children. She again worked as a cook in a Kansas City, Mo., school.

The family moved to Centerville in 1976 and then to Parker in 1988. Mrs. Land continued cooking in the Parker schools for several years.

She loved oil painting, her yard and her garden. She enjoyed cooking for her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Her memberships included the Centerville Community Church and Parker Chapter No. 307 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Lester Land of the home; her mother, Vera Shelman of Pueblo; a son, Robert Land of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Shirley Land-Brecht of Grain Valley, Mo., and Vera Borum of Parker; a brother, Marvin Shelman of Pueblo; a sister, Norma Applehands of Pahrump, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Services were Monday in the church, followed by burial in the Goodrich Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Howard L. Lickteig
APRIL 7, 1950 - SEPT. 27, 2005

Howard L. Lickteig, 55, Greeley, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

He was born April 7, 1950, in Garnett, the son of Maurice Jacob and Florence Brummel Lickteig. He was a 1968 graduate of Greeley High School and worked as a heavy equipment operator for McCorkendale Construction Inc.

Survivors include two daughters, Kelsay Lickteig of Pittsburg and Lindsay Faust of Yuma, Ariz.; six brothers, Jake Lickteig, Ron Lickteig, Merle Lickteig, Dean Lickteig, Jim Lickteig and Rick Lickteig; and three sisters, Nancy Lee, Dottie Lickteig and Lynn Lickteig.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Catholic Church in Greeley, followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. A wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Memorials may be made to St. John's School in Greeley in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

Waldo William Lynch
MAY 22, 1909 - SEPT. 26, 2005

Waldo William Lynch, 96, Osawatomie, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

Mr. Lynch, known as "Bill," was born May 22, 1909, in Patesville, Ky., the son of Vernon Thomas and Mollie Fawver Lynch. The family, who were farmers, moved to Durant, Okla., in 1914 and then to Spade, Texas, in 1925 where they helped break up the Spade Ranch for cotton farming.

After completing high school, Mr. Lynch farmed and operated an automobile repair shop.

He and Owene Brown were married Jan. 24, 1932, in Clovis, N.M. They made their home at Hart Camp, Texas.

During World War II they moved to Morenci, Ariz., where he was a large equipment mechanic for Bechtel Corp., at a copper mine. In January 1945 they moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where he continued to work as a mechanic on large equipment. Later, he again operated his own automobile repair shop for several years.

In 1957 he went to work for the New Mexico State Highway Department until he retired in 1974.

In 1989 they moved to Osawatomie to be near their son and his family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Osawatomie.

Survivors include his wife, Owene Lynch of Osawatomie; a son, Billy Ray Lynch of Osawatomie; a brother, H.V. Lynch of San Angelo, Texas; two sisters, Wannamarie Bales of Breckenridge, Texas, and Geraldine Cowan of Milledgeville, Ga.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie, followed by burial in Osawatomie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday prior to the service. He will be in state from 1 to 8 Friday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the church or Life Care Center of Osawatomie.

Charles Buchanan Schuler
NOV. 8, 1932 - NOV. 11, 2005

Charles Buchanan Schuler, 73, Ottawa, a former Osawatomie resident, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, in Ottawa Village Manor in Ottawa.

He was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Garnett, the son of John P. and Nellie M. Smith Schuler. The family moved to Osawatomie when he was a small child, and he grew up there, graduating in 1950 from Osawatomie High School.

He married Betty Cole, a former area resident, on March 20, 1957, in Oklahoma. They became the parents of two children.

Mr. Schuler spent his working life in the U.S. Army. He had a 22-year career, serving in occupied France, Germany and two tours in Vietnam. He was stationed in Berlin for a time. He retired from the Army at Fort Riley, Kan. He received many service awards. He worked briefly for the railroad between military assignments.

Following the death of his wife, Betty Schuler, and his son, Charles Schuler Jr., both in August 2000, he moved from Manhattan to Ottawa to live with his daughter and later at the nursing facility.

Before his illness, he liked to work with wood. He could look at a picture and then make something.

Surviving are his daughter, Jewell Cafferty of Ottawa; two brothers, J.C. Schuler of Kansas City, Kan., and Bill Schuler of Edgerton; and a sister, Diane Johns of Osawatomie.

Graveside services were Monday in the Paola Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in his name to Midland Hospice or the Alzheimer's Foundation, in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.
