Lois Nathalie Reynolds
July 9, 1925 - July 31, 2006

Lois Nathalie Reynolds, 81, Russell, Kan., a former Osawatomie resident, died Monday, July 31, 2006.

Mrs. Reynolds lived in Osawatomie when her husband, Richard H. Reynolds, headed up First Kansas Federal Savings in Osawatomie.

She was born July 9, 1925, in Russell where she grew up and spent most of her life. Her first marriage was in 1946 to Billy L. Ingram. In 1976 she married Reynolds.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two children, Jack Ingram of Plano, Texas, and Pam Langhofer of Weatherford, Texas; a stepdaughter, Susan Slates of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services were Aug. 5 in the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.

Mildred Mary Seck
Sept. 16, 1917 - Aug. 11, 2006

Mildred Mary Seck, 88, Independence, Mo., a native of Scipio, Kan., died Friday, Aug. 11, 2006.

She was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Scipio, the daughter of Chris and Clara Roeckers Wolken. On Dec. 30, 1939, she and Albert Francis Seck of the Wea community in Miami County, were married in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scipio.

They made their home in Independence and raised six children. Mrs. Seck later earned a master's degree in special education from the University of Missouri.

She was a mother, grandmother, teacher, volunteer, mentor and a source of inspiration and strength to those who knew her.

Those preceding her in death were her husband; two brothers, Bob Wolken and Art Wolken; and two sisters, Sister Christina Wolken and Sister Mary Wolken.

Survivors include her six children, Tom Seck, John Seck, Virginia Stocker, Chris Seck, Bill Seck and Suzie Walkey; a brother, Harold Wolken of Garnett; two sisters, Lillian Mayes of Garnett and Annetta Butel and Jean Wolken, both of Paola; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Ann's Catholic Church, 10113 E. Lexington, Independence, Mo.

Memorials may be made to Sisters of St. Francis, 2100 Noland Road, Independence, MO 64050.

Pearl Irene Sommers
Oct. 5, 1925 - Aug. 7, 2006

Pearl Irene Sommers, 80, Linn Valley, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, in St. Mary's Manor in Blue Springs, Mo.

Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Bluffton, Ind., she was the daughter of Raymond and Blanche Ehret Smith. After graduating from high school in Vanburen, Ind., she went to work as a licensed practical nurse for Anaconda Wire and Cable where she met Web Sommers. On March 15, 1946, they were married in Jonesboro, Ind.

Mrs. Sommers was a homemaker and a member of the Linn Valley Community Church.

Those preceding her in death included her husband, who died Sept. 16, 2005, and a brother, Calvin Smith.

Survivors include a son, Bill Sommers of McKinney, Texas; a daughter, Gloria Fowler of Blue Springs, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were Thursday in the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in La Cygne. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park.

Robert Lee Mangold
Jan. 14, 1931 - Aug. 20, 2006

Robert Lee Mangold, 75, La Cygne, well known La Cygne businessman and civic leader, died Sunday Aug. 20, 2006, in his home.

He was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Amsterdam, Mo., the son of Lee A. and Ecla Jordan Mangold. He graduated in 1948 from Amsterdam High School and in 1952 from Baker University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

He attended veterinary school at Kansas State University from 1952 to 1953. After the death of his father in 1953, he returned to La Cygne and co-owned and operated Mangold Funeral Homes in La Cygne and Amsterdam as well as operating Amsterdam Sundries from 1953 to 1969.

Mr. Mangold, who was known as "Bob," was a sales representative for Sidewinder Corp. from 1969 to 1971

In 1971, he built and operated the first Mangold's Market, a grocery store located in La Cygne and later owned stores in Butler, Mo., Pittsburg, Pleasanton and Bronson, Kan.

He served as vice president of the Kansas Funeral Directors' Association in 1968. He was a life member of La Cygne Masonic Lodge, the Linn County Shrine Club, the Fort Scott Scottish Rite, the Kansas York Rite, the Order of Quetzalcoati and Mirza Temple. He was a member of the Mirza Pick-Ups and helped to organize the Mobile Nobels. He served as potentate of Mirza Temple in 1987 and was honored with a lifetime membership to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in 2003.

He served on the Associated Grocers Board from 1981 to 1986. He served on the Swan Manor Nursing Home Board, the La Cygne City Council, the Linn County Economic Development Board, the LaHarper Heights Board and the La Cygne Medical Board.

Mr. Mangold was a member of the First United Methodist Church at La Cygne where he served on the administrative council.

He and Dorothy Ann Spruell were married Jan. 1, 1970, in Amsterdam.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mangold of the home; four sons; Rod Mangold and Mark Fritts, both of Pleasanton, Larry Fritts of Arley, Ala., and Gordon Fritts of Billonia, Ark.; four daughters, Diana Taylor of Broken Arrow, Okla., Connie Rodriguez of Gastonia, N.C., Mitzi L. Scriven of Branson, Mo., and Leslie Best of Arley; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the church, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, also in La Cygne.

Memorials may be made to the La Cygne Library building fund, Mirza Hospital transportation fund or Olathe Hospice in care of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, La Cygne, KS 66040..

Donald R. McAfee
May 11, 1920 - Aug. 20, 2006

Donald R. McAfee, 86, Garnett, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, in Anderson County Hospital in Garnett.

Mr. McAfee, a native of Garnett, was the owner and operator of the Garnett Church Furniture Factory for a number of years.

He was born May 11, 1920, the son of Harry and Nona Beech McAfee. He attended the rural Fairground School before graduating in 1938 from Garnett High School.

After graduating, he worked for the Garnett Church Furniture Factory. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, serving one year state side, a year in Africa and two years in Italy during World War II.

After completing his military service, he returned to Garnett and married Naomi Sarver on Nov. 3, 1946, in Ottawa.

He returned to his job at the furniture factory and later purchased the business in 1960. He sold the business in 1979 due to health complications, but purchased it back in 1985. In 1993, he sold the factory and retired. During his years of ownership, he was able to complete projects for some of the largest churches in the United States and many local churches. His business also made several pieces for the Pope's visit in 1987.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Garnett, where he served as deacon, trustee and superintendent and assistant superintendent for more than 40 years.

Mr. McAfee served for more than 55 years on the Anderson County Fair Board of Directors; 29 years as leader for the Silver Arrow 4-H Club; and many years on the Southeast Kansas Health Board of Directors.

Those preceding him in death were a sister, Beulah, who died in infancy, and two brothers, Wayne McAfee and Leonard McAfee.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi McAfee of the home; four sons, Lowell McAfee of Olathe, Gary McAfee of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark McAfee of Wichita and Duane McAfee of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Carol Riedel of Centralia, Mo.; a sister, Ruth O'Brien of Oak Harbor, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the church, followed by burial in the Garnett Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.

Frank Miller Jr.
Oct. 6, 1913 - Aug. 20, 2006

Frank Miller Jr., 92, Garnett, died at his home Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

He was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Garnett, the son of Frank Ernest and Hazel V. Williamson Miller. He was a 1934 graduate of Garnett High School.

Mr. Miller was a farmer and stockman.

He and Lois Benjamin were married Jan. 3, 1937, in Iola.

Mr. Miller built a house on the couple's farm in 1959. After his retirement in the early 1980s, he built a lake house at Sugar Valley Lakes and turned his attention to furniture building. He made numerous clocks, desks, chairs and other pieces, all from lumber harvested on the family farm.

Throughout his life, he was generous with his time, serving on two school boards and the boards of Farm Bureau, Anderson County Fair, 111A and Rural Water District No. 1. He also served for 25 years as an Agricultural Soil Conservation Service committee.

He enjoyed all sports, but particularly baseball and the Kansas City Royals. He was an avid bowler for more than 34 years, winning the state championship in 1968.

Those preceding him in death were a daughter, Kathryn Ann Miller, who died in infancy; a sister, Laura Smith; four brothers, Russell Miller, Ernest Miller, Melvin Miller and Bob Miller; and two grandsons, Randy Miller and Gerry Miller.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Miller of Garnett; two sons, Gerald Miller and Richard Miller, both of Garnett; a daughter, Lorraine Stewart of Cashion, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church in Garnett, followed by burial in the Garnett Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 tonight in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, 219 S. Oak St. in Garnett.

Memorials may be made to the Anderson County Fair Board in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, KS 66032.
