Ida Elizabeth Martin
(June 12, 1928 - Jan. 22, 2003)

Ida Elizabeth Martin, 74, Louisburg, a native of and former businesswoman in La Cygne, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in Louisburg Care Center.

She was born June 12, 1928, in La Cygne, a daughter of Ernest and Ida Woodson Sullivan.

On Aug. 21, 1954, she and Hayes I. Martin were married in Paola. In addition to being a wife and mother, she owned and operated the Tisha-Gram Antique Shop in La Cygne from 1970 until 1996.

Mrs. Martin attended the Calvary Baptist Church in La Cygne and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Those preceding her in death included two brothers, Lester Sullivan and William Sullivan, and two sisters, Velva Young and Geneva Bates.

Survivors include her husband, Hayes I. Martin of Louisburg; two sons, Clifford Boyd of La Cygne and Nathan Boyd of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, Earnesteen Bracy of Olathe; a brother, Sylvester Sullivan; three sisters, Viola Wallace, Christina Fewell and Eunice Van; and four grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Coffel-Schneider Mangold Funeral Home, followed by burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, both in La Cygne.

Frank Pfannes
(Jan. 26, 1914 - Jan. 24, 2003)

Frank Pfannes, 88, Kansas City, Mo., a former resident of the Wea community near Bucyrus, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Baptist-Lutheran Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Jan. 26, 1914, in Westphalia, Kan., the son of John and Gertrude Troll Pfannes. The family later moved to the Wea community.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Pfannes worked many years for the Bendix Corp. in Kansas City before retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Church, the More Club and Knights of Columbus, all of Kansas City, Mo.

Three sisters, Ann Wernsman, Rose Miller and Sister Dolores Pfannes, were among those preceding him in death.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dorothy O'Keefe Pfannes of the home; a son, John Pfannes of Overland Park; a brother, Albert Pfannes of Grandview, Mo.; two sisters, Louise Wolken of Garnett and Margaret Rickman of Louisburg; and three grandchildren.

The funeral Mass was Tuesday in the church. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Wea. Arrangements were cared for by McGilley State Line Chapel in Kansas City, Mo.

Floyd Edgar Wells
(Sept. 22, 1917 - Jan. 24, 2003)

Floyd Edgar Wells, 85, rural Parker, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in his home.

He was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Eureka, Kan., one of the 12 children of Clinton and Odessa Martin Wells. He grew up on the family farm near Gridley, Kan., and graduated from Gridley High School. He went to Pittsburg State University in 1938 on a football scholarship.

He and Esther Rose Cochran were married July 3, 1940.

Mr. Wells owned and operated the Miami County Locker Plant in Osawatomie from 1947 until about 1966. He then worked as a butcher at Cow Palace in Osawatomie for many years before retiring several years ago. He also raised livestock.

His pastimes included fishing, hunting, calling square dances and playing pool. He was involved with the Four County Saddle Club before it dissolved and participated in the John Brown Jamboree in Osawatomie for many years.

Those preceding him in death were six brothers; two sisters; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Esther Wells of the home; his children, Ruth Easterbrook of Wellsville, Earl Wells of Clinton, Okla., Ken Wells of Parker and Floesta Barthol of Olathe; four sisters, Wilma Smith of Fredonia, Kan., Oletha Huston of El Dorado, Kan., Lela Kress of Yates Center, Kan., and Clara Wiede of San Diego, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Clinton Randall, Chris Wells, Bill Oxley, William Easterbrook, Rick Barthol and Larry Barthol. Burial was in Cadmus Cemetery.

George William Beets
(Feb. 28, 1921 - Jan. 21, 2003)

George William Beets, 81, Paola, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

Known as "Bill," he was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Hillsdale. He was the ninth of the 11 children of Fred and Clara Ethel Dunn Beets. He attended grade school in Hillsdale and was a 1939 graduate of Spring Hill High School.

He and Mildred Ruth Jarboe were married Feb. 14, 1990, in Osawatomie. They made their home in the same house he grew up in at Hillsdale and where he spent his entire life.

Mr. Beets worked as a plumber in Olathe for 20 years and was also a farmer.

He attended the United Methodist Church in Spring Hill. His pastimes were fishing and hunting.

Those preceding him in death included five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Beets of the home; a brother, Fred Beets of Spearfish, S.D.; and a sister, Pauline Smith of Paola.

Services were Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie, followed by burial in Hillsdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Beets, Gary Smith, Laurence Boehm, Vernon Beets, Dick Beets and Bryan Beets.

Maxine Warner
Maxine Warner, 83, Nixa, Mo., former Osawatome resident, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in the home of her son in Nixa. Arrangements are pending at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie.

Alvin E. Hall
* Alvin E. Hall, 73, Osawatomie, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery. n Memorials may be made to Olathe Home Health.

William A. Brooks
* William A. Brooks, a former Osawatomie resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in his home in Paola. Mr. Brooks was a 1943 graduate of Osawatomie High School. No arrangements have been scheduled; no further information is available at this time.

Edna Mable Tipton
(Sept. 22, 1910 - Jan. 28, 2003)

Edna Mable Tipton, 92, Garnett, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Richmond Care Center. She had been a resident in the care center since 1997.

She was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Cass County, Mo., the daughter of Mark B. and Nona Mott Hulett. She grew up in Garnett. She lived in the Kansas City area from the 1930s until returning to Garnett in the 1950s.

Mrs. Tipton was a homemaker.

Those preceding her in death were a sister, Josephine Hulett, and four brothers, Floyd Hulett, Roy Hulett, Leslie Hulett and Funston Hulett.

Survivors include a son, Donald Tipton of Garnett, and two sisters, Alma Hulett of Sacramento, Calif., and Elsie Hulett of Port Isabel, Texas.

Services were Thursday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett, followed by burial in Garnett Cemetery.

Ella Mae Rigdon
(March 30, 1913 - Jan. 28, 2003)

Ella Mae Rigdon, 89, Fort Scott, a former resident of the Wesley Chapel community northwest of Mound City, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.

She was born March 30, 1913, in Centerville, a daughter of Ralph Vernon and Ethel Ester McGrew Adams. She and Ralph Lester Rigdon were married March 4, 1931, in Greeley.

In addition to being a homemaker, she had also worked in housekeeping at several hospitals.

Mrs. Rigdon was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott.

Those preceding her in death were a brother, Bernal Adams, and a sister, Irene McGee.

Survivors include two sons, Verl LeRoy Rigdon of St. Ann's, Mo., and Harry Lewis Rigdon of Plano, Texas; two daughters, Edna Mae Allen of Flemington, Mo., and Ethel Louise Rigdon of Stockton, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. Burial was in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
