Anthony James Hines
SEPT. 27, 1985 - MAY 1, 2005

Anthony James Hines, 19, Paola, died Sunday, May 1, 2005.

Known as "A.J.," he was born Sept. 27, 1985, in Dallas, Texas, the son of Carol Clinton Hines. In 1989 they moved to Paola where he attend schools. He also lived with his grandparents in Rantoul and attended Central Heights for a year and a half.

As a child, he played baseball, basketball and soccer and wrestled. His pastimes included fishing, sports, swimming, boating, camping, listening to music and playing video and computer games. He had plans to attend college to study computer graphics or programming.

He was also active in Boy Scouts for seven years.

Among those preceding him in death was his grandmother, Marcia Hines.

Survivors include his mother, Carol Hines, and his brother, Matthew Hines, both of the home; a son, Keaton Davis of Garnett, 9 months old; and his grandparents, Larrie and Jo Ann Kleitz of Rantoul, Jim and Judy Hines of Nacona, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clinton and Clifford Clinton, all of Paola.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola, followed by burial in Paola Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Fern Day Lee
APRIL 11, 1912 - MAY 3, 2005

Fern Day Lee, 93, Moberly, Mo., a native of Parker, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, in Moberly Nursing and Rehabilitation in Moberly.

She was born April 11, 1912, in Parker, the daughter of Charles and Magnolia Day Matney.

She spent most of her life in California where she was a clerk for Katz's Drug Store. She moved to Missouri in 1992.

Those preceding her in death included a brother, Morris Day Jr., and two sisters, Ethel Cox and Pansy Day.

Survivors include four nieces, Betty Gerlt of Springfield, Mo., Carol Brown of Moberly, Wilma Kennedy of Independence, Mo., and Linda Puttsenburgur of Belton, Mo., and their families.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cater Funeral Home of Moberly.

Keith Elliott Spaulding Benedict
MAY 5, 1920 - JUNE 22, 2005

Keith Elliott Spaulding Benedict, 85, Phoenix, Ariz., a former Miami County resident, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005.

He was born May 5, 1920, in Corning, Mo., the son of Harry W. and Odus Mullins Benedict. The family lived in St. Joseph, Mo., before his mother and he moved to the Somerset area in rural Paola. He attended Somerset School for eight years.

He lived on the farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 26, 1942. He was a corporal T-5 in the 357th Infantry, 90th Division. He was in charge of a motorized division on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. He served in battles and campaigns that included Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

He received the Combat Infantry Badge on July 20, 1944, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge on May 15, 1942. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Service Arrrowhead.

He and Arlene Catherine Holtz of the Block community in rural Paola were married Aug. 9, 1942, in Camp Barkeley, Texas. They lived in Paola for a short time before moved to Grand Junction, Colo.

They returned to Paola for a time and then lived in Osawatomie, Pleasanton and Topeka, before moving to Phoenix, Ariz., to be near their daughters.

Mr. Benedict was an auto mechanic, a carpenter, a mason and a tree trimmer. He helped build the First Lutheran Church in Paola. He was known as a loving husband and father.

Preceding him in death were two sons, Damon Wesley Benedict and Timmy Lynn Benedict; two brothers, Noah Benedict and Woodruff Benedict; a sister, Dorthea Mullins; two stepbrothers, Charles Gatlin and Harold Gatlin; and a stepsister, Viola Brewer.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Benedict of the home; four daughters, Shirley Arlene Benedict, Esther Eileen Williamson and Robin Elizabeth Hareza, all of Phoenix, and Valentena Marie Upton of Leawood; four sons, Kenneth LeRoy Benedict of Osawatomie, Daryl William Benedict of Olathe, Everett Niles Benedict of Atlanta, Ga., and Billy Bruce Benedict of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Dan Gatlin of Greeley and David Gatlin of Paola; a sister, Genevieve Pierce of California; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Memorial services were Saturday in Christ Church-Lutheran in Phoenix. An honor guard will conduct services at 9 a.m. Thursday at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Floyd Russell Gillogly
DEC. 8, 1911 - JUNE 26, 2005

Floyd Russell Gillogly, 93, rural Paola, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

The son of George Henry and Jessie Hickman Gillogly, he was born Dec. 8, 1911, near Paola. He attended Highland Country School for eight years.

He married Mable Long on Jan. 2, 1937, in Paola. They made their home in Cleveland, Mo., for a time and lived west of Drexel, Mo., in Miami County before moving to the Paola-Fontana area in 1964. She preceded him in death in August 1989.

He and Gladys Faye Kennedy McDonald were married Jan. 28, 1991, in Miami, Okla. They made their home on the farm.

Mr. Gillogly was a farmer and also worked for the Miami County Highway Department as a truck driver from the fall of 1963 until he retired in 1976.

He was a member of the Osawatomie First United Methodist Church.

He served on boards of the Farm Bureau and Rural Water District No. 2. He was a charter member of the Fontana Senior Citizens and attended activities in the Paola Senior Center. He was a member of several card clubs.

His hobbies included farming and gardening. He especially took great pride and joy in the tomatoes he grew. He was known as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Others preceding him in death were a sister, Mabel Zebert; a brother, George Douglas Gillogly; and three grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Gillogly of the home; three daughters, Alice Marie Houston of Waukesha, Wis., and Anna Mae Abney and Karen Kay Gillogly, both of Kansas City, Kan.; a son, Donald Dean Gillogly of Drexel, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Teresa Rogers of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Diane Karna of Azle, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were today in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Sharon Cemetery in Drexel.

Bessie Jean Hope
DIED JUNE 26, 2005

Bessie Jean Wilt Hope, 75, Southern Pines, N.C., a former resident of Osawatomie, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, in Elliott City, Md.

She grew up in Osawatomie and was a 1948 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

After her marriage to Oscar Leonard Hope Jr., they lived in Osawatomie for a short time. They had been married more than 53 years when he preceded her in death.

Her pastimes included fishing, trap shooting, duplicate bridge and volunteer work.

Survivors include her four children, Jean Freeland of Fredericksburg, Va., Richard Hope of Elliott City, Md., Rebecca DeMarco of New Windsor, Md., and Michael Hope of Sykesville, Md.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation and memorial services will be Saturday in the Hernando Funeral Home, 2285 Highway 51 South, Hernando, Miss. Burial will follow.

Jessie June Lowry
JUNE 4, 1915 - JUNE 27, 2005

Jessie June Lowry, 90, of Garnett, died Monday, June 27, 2005, in Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett.

She was born June 4, 1915, in Anderson County, the daughter of Thomas and Dora Bristow Welborn. She and Forest Wilson Lowry were married Sept. 8, 1933, in Ottawa.

Mrs. Lowry was a homemaker, but worked in an ammunition factory during World War II. She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in the Argentine District until the flood of 1951.

Her pastimes included ceramics, upholstery projects with her husband, bowling, crochet, gardening and playing cards and marbles with her family.

Those preceding her in death were her husband, who died Oct. 30, 1989; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Claron Lowry of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Ralph Welborn of Morganton, N.C., and Joe Welborn of Woodruff, S.C.; Dora Lewis of Garnett; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends during a lunch after the service.
