Dale Eugene Bryant
JUNE 19, 1923 - AUG. 19, 2005

Dale Eugene Bryant, 82, longtime Paola resident, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at his home.

He was born June 19, 1923, in Oswego, Kan., the son of Columbia Boone and Inis Ann Black Bryant. He graduated in 1941 from Altamont High School.

When he was 17 years old, he was severely gored by a bull on the family farm. As a result of the injuries, he was treated at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and was the first surviving patient to receive the experimental drug, erythromycin.

He married Thelma Louise Fulkerson on Jan. 1, 1945, in Independence, Kan. They became the parents of eight children.

Early in his life, he farmed and worked at the Parsons Ammunition Plant as a captain. He also worked as a crop adjuster for the insurance industry and as a superintendent in the construction business.

Mr. Bryant will be remembered for his large strawberry patch, which he and his wife enjoyed tending. He loved farming, gardening, woodworking, leather crafting, bluegrass music, and most of all, his family.

Preceding him in death were a brother, Dean, with whom he was very close, who died in World War II; 13 other brothers and sisters; and two grandsons.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Thelma Bryant of the home; three sons, Robert Bryant of Lawrence, Roger Bryant of Louisburg and Randy Bryant of Wichita; five daughters, Ardell Dobbins of Olathe, Ilamay Evans and Lora Griffith, both of Paola, Janna Dixon of Ottawa and Glora Mathews of Fontana; a sister, Lorene Kring of Topeka; a brother, Walter Bryant of Lawrence; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services were today in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Paola Cemetery.

Paul Kenneth Creager
MAY 26, 1907 - AUG. 19, 2005

Paul Kenneth Creager, 98, Prescott, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, in Countryview Nursing Home in Prescott.

He was born May 26, 1907, in La Cygne, the son of John and Hattie Lopeman Creager. On Oct. 25, 1929, he and Opal Smith were married.

Mr. Creager taught in numerous schools in this area for many years.

He was active in the formation of the farmers' cooperative in La Cygne.

His memberships included the United Methodist Church of La Cygne; Masons; and Kiwanis in California.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, who died May 15, 1989; his son, Wilbur Curtis Creager; four brothers, Glenn Creager, and three who died in infancy; two sisters, Eileen Lawhead and Pauline Strsiak; and one granddaughter, April Creager.

Survivors include two sisters, Wanda Creager of La Cygne and Lela Hanggie of Ontario, Calif.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services were today in Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton. Burial was in New Lancaster Cemetery.

Wesley James Freeman
JUNE 14, 2000 - AUG. 17, 2005

Wesley James Freeman, 5, Garnett, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in Garnett.

He was born June 14, 2000, in Ottawa, the son of Samuel W. and Amanda Heusted Freeman.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Amanda Freeman and Mark Foltz, both of Garnett; his father and stepmother, Samuel W. Freeman and Stephanie Bresee, both of Blue Mound; a brother, Lane Freeman, 3, of Garnett; a sister, Kirsten Freeman, 6, of Garnett; his grandparents, Charles and Beverly Freeman of Parker, Lauree Wright of Garnett and Kevin Heusted of Topeka; and his great-grandmothers, Rosemary Heusted of Topeka and June Tinsley of Parker.

Services were Saturday in the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett, followed by burial in Garnett Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Mary Ellen Harclerode Milam
Mary Ellen Harclerode Milam, 83, Oak Grove, Mo., a former Paola resident, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Fontana Cemetery.

Florence E. Giambazi Durrant
* Florence E. Giambazi Durrant, 86, Milford, Conn., the widow of the late Maurice Durrant, formerly of Osawatomie, died Aug. 20 in Milford. The Durrants lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for about 35 years before his death. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Osawatomie Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cody-White Funeral Home in Milford.

Coletta E. Bergerhaus
OCT. 11, 1917 - AUG. 21, 2005

Coletta E. Bergerhaus, 87, Overland Park, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, in the Forum Retirement Home in Overland Park.

She was born Oct. 11, 1917, one of the three children of Leo and Leonora Wittry Bergerhaus. After her parents died in 1920, she was raised by her maternal grandparents until 1923 when her grandmother died. She attended school in Greeley and Ursuline Academy in Paola, graduating in 1934.

Later that year, she moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she worked as an executive secretary at General Motors until retiring.

Those preceding her in death were a brother, Maurice Wittry Bergerhaus, who died Dec. 29, 1970, and a sister, Ellen Regina Bergerhaus, who died July 26, 2004.

Survivors include a niece, Carol Jeanne Bergerhaus Dishong, Bennett, Colo., and many cousins and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Catholic Church, followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery, both in Greeley. Arrangements were cared for by Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel of Garnett.

Cecil Childress
SEPT. 7, 1940 - AUG. 24, 2005

Cecil Childress, 64, Paola, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, in Medicalodge of Paola.

He was born Sept. 7, 1940, in Pulaski, Tenn. He had lived in the Tennessee and Oklahoma areas before coming to Paola.

He was cremated and no services are planned. Arrangements are by Wilson and Son Funeral Home of Paola.

Thelma Matney
DEC. 15, 1911 - AUG. 27, 2005

Thelma Matney, 93, a former Paola resident, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, in Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons, Kan.

She was born Dec. 15, 1911, in Fort Scott, the daughter of James and Cora Gordon Vale. She grew up in Paola and graduated in 1929 from Paola High School.

After receiving a teaching certificate in 1931 from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, she taught several years in rural schools near Paola.

On July 1, 1934, she married A.E. Matney in Kansas City, Kan. They moved to Parsons in 1940. He preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1983.

Mrs. Matney was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years and taught Sunday school for more than 30 years in the primary department. She was a member of Progress Chapter No. 49, Order of the Eastern Star, for many years and was a past matron. She had also served district and grand appointments in the order.

For several years, she worked at the Tom Broderick Co. in Parsons.

Two brothers preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, James E. Matney of Parsons; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were today in Carson-Wall Funeral Home, and burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, both in Parsons.
