Eva "Pat" Wood

Eva "Pat" Wood, 58, of Belle Plaine, KS, died Monday afternoon as a result of an accident, when a semi-tractor trailer hit her toll booth at the Southern Terminal on the Kansas Turnpike. She had been a toll collector for the Turnpike for over 16 years.

She was born the daughter of Paul and Eva Grace Venters Metcalf on April 24, 1942 in Granola, KS. Her father precedes her in death.

Pat and Jarrel B. Wood were united in marriage on August 18, 1964 in Larned, KS. They combined two families and added a couple of their own children.

Together they raised seven children. Both were very proud to see all complete high school and on to successful careers. They just celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary.

She began working at the Turnpike 24 years ago. She went to work at Howard Johnson's and worked there eight years until it closed. Pat then began working as a Toll Booth Collector.

Pat had a love for collecting anything that had Cardinals "red birds" on it. She had over 500 items from ceramic figurines, pillows, blankets, pens and yard statues. Pat was always busy with crocheting, cross stitching, reading or doing needlepoint. She recently finished making all her kids afghans.

While she did enjoy cooking her favorite items of chili and lasagna, Jarrel did most of the cooking. Family gatherings were always a special time in her life. She was very out-going and friendly.

Pat loved to stay busy all the time, that is why she enjoyed collecting tolls in the truck lane on the turnpike. Pat gained many close friends throughout the years working for the turnpike from the truck drivers to the state troopers.

She was known for her great sense of humor, as well as her straight forward tell it like it was attitude. She had a great love for her family, they were everything to her. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Pat was always helping someone and her last crusade was to help a fellow coworker get a motorized wheel chair. She was going to challenge the collectors to raise enough money for this. A memorial has been established to acomplish this goal.

Funeral services for Pat will be held 2:00 p.m Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine, KS. The Rev. Andy Torres of the United Methodist Church and Chaplain Jim Wharton of the Sumner County Sheriff's Department will officiate. Interment will be in the Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Day Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000 and from 9:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.
