Vena Mae Hyde

Vena Mae Hyde, daughter of Orval and Nancy Campbell Haskins, was born in Wichita on Sept. 25, 1928.

She died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Riverview Manor in Oxford at age 75.

Vena married Glen Hyde in May 1952 in Wichita. They lived their entire married life in Wichita and he preceded her in death in 1981.

She is also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her sons Gary, Oxford, and Russell, Rohnert Park, Calif.; her brothers Wayne Haskins, Latham, Ray Haskins and Dale Haskins, both of Wichita; her sisters, Mary Sanko and Mamie Haskins, both of Oxford; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Oxford Christian Church on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 10 a.m., with interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.

The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Oxford Christian Church and Hospice Care of Kansas.

Contributions may be sent or left at the funeral home where friends may call on Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Oxford Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. McCarroll

Robert E., McCarroll, 79, Wellington, died early Saturday evening, Jan. 3, 2004 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1924 in Tulsa, Okla.

Cremation has been effected and no services are planned.

Fern Arnspiger Hyten

Fern Arnspiger Hyten, 97, of Wellington, homemaker, died early Friday morning, Jan. 30, 2004 at the Ashland Nursing Home in Ashland.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later by the Day Funeral Home.

Don L. Johnson

Don L. Johnson was born Jan. 3, 1949, in Batesville. Ark., to Mae and Dalton Johnson.

They moved to the Wichita area when Don was only three years old. He attended Wichita schools, graduating from Heights High School in 1967. He began working for Goodyear upon completion of Vo-Tech School.

He married Janice L. May on Jan. 8, 1972 at the Wellington First Presbyterian Church. To this union a daughter, Heather Dawn was born. Shortly after her birth he went to work for the Sumner County Road and Bridge Department, and later he formed a partnership with his father in D & D Construction.

Health concerns forced his retirement from the construction business a few years ago, and since then he spent his time between helping Ken Patterson at his auction house, gardening in his backyard, and being Pa-Pa to his only grandson, Jacob.

Don and Jacob loved spending time together, and Jacob especially loved the time he spent with Pa-Pa driving down country roads.

Another special time for Don was Fridays. He and his sweetheart Janice seldom missed spending a Friday together. It was "Their Day." He doted on Heather while she was growing up and she has always been his pride and joy.

Don suffered a heart attack early Sunday morning, March 14, 2004, and passed away shortly thereafter. He was 55 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, daughter Heather and grandson Jacob, all of the home in Wellington, and his parents, Ina Mae and Dalton Johnson of Wichita.

The family has respectfully requested any donations be made to the American Heart Association. Contributions may be left or sent in care of the funeral home.

Graveside services and internment will be Wednessday, March 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Cemetery in Mayfield, with the Reverend Sallie Shore officiating.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, March 16, 2004, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Hawks Funeral Home, Wellington. The casket will remain closed.

Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Bunch

Dorothy Bunch, 85, longtime Wellington resident and former Executive Director of the Wellington Housing Authority died at Glenwood House in Wellington Thursday morning, April 1, 2004.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004 in the First Baptist Church, Pastor Bob Hanthorn officiating.

Survivors include her son Bill Bunch and his wife Jeanne of Wellington; her daughter Ann Riggenbach and her husband J.C. of Derby and her sister Shirley Biller of Topeka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in Dorothy's name with the First Baptist Church and the Wellington Community Foundation. Contributions may be left or sent to Hawks Funeral Home, 704 N. Washington, Wellington.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home as Dorothy has been cremated according to her wishes. A complete obituary will appear in Monday's edition of the Wellington Daily News.

Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Twila Marie Jefferies

Funeral services were held for Twila Marie Jefferies at the Church of Christ in Wellington on March 31, 2004, at 1 p.m. Mr. Paul Herndickson and Mr. T. J. Finley officiated.

She was born Oct. 22, 1922 in Lucerne, Mo., and passed away March 27, 2004, in Belle Plaine.

Musical selections included "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be," "Mansions over the Hilltop," "Beyond the Sunset," and Just a Closer Walk with Thee."

Soloists were Sharon Wiley, Helen Norris, Crystal Shields, Ashley Jefferies, Tom Norris, Alan Shields, and Wayne Harris.

Ushers were Roger Brownlee and David Pierce.

Casket bearers were Burton Freeman, Jim Highfill, LeRoy Lewis, Clayton Jefferies, Bill Rotz, and Mike Medlin.

A memorial fund has been established with the Maude Carpenter Childrens Home.

Internment was at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita.

Frank Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Ruby Naomi (Lynch) Furman

Ruby Naomi (Lynch) Furman, 81, Wellington resident since 1949, passed away Friday morning, April 23, 2004 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus.

Ruby was born on April 7, 1923 at Rossville, Lincoln County, Okla., the seventh child of 11 children born to Alvie T. and Jessie T. (Haun) Lynch.

On August 8, 1942 she married James L. Furman in Stillwater, Okla. Ruby worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" for Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City during WWII helping build C-47 cargo planes while Jim was stationed with the U.S. Army in Europe.

She was a long time employee of Glasco Drug Store and also worked in the jewelry department of Wal-Mart from 1989 to 1994.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder and deacon. She was also a volunteer at the Presbyterian Thrift Shop. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Hobbies that Ruby enjoyed were gardening, sewing, fishing and puzzles.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim in 1986; two brothers Clyde Lynch and Wayne Lynch; and four sisters Louise Kennedy, Irma McCain, Lona Ashmore, and Golda Pata.

Survivors include her three sons, Criss Furman of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Jim D. Furman and his wife Linda of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and Ron Furman and his wife April of Wellington; two Brothers Harold Lynch and his wife Lillis of Reseda, Ca. and Robert Lynch and his wife Mary Lee of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two Sisters, Lois Cavin and her husband Bill of Ramona, Okla. and Jewell Stickel of Knights Landing, Ca.; seven grandchildren, Jay Furman and his wife Melissa of Spring, Texas; Shannon Nott of Cedar Bluff, Neb.; Lily Hall and her husband James of Ponca City, Okla.; Erika Reeves and her husband Jon of Tulsa Okla.; Bryanna Spafford and her husband David of Andover; Staci Reuter and her husband Brad of Shawnee; and Spencer Furman of Wellington; two step grandchildren, Jennifer Kinyon and Malorie Kinyon of Wellington; six great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Services will be held on April 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Douglas House officiating. Interment will be in Sumner Memorial Gardens.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.

Calling times at the funeral home will be on Monday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Donald E. Walton

Donald E. Walton, Sr., 66, of Geuda Springs, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home.

He was born on August 25, 1937 in Burden, the son of George Washington and Nina V. Walton.

He married Loretta Walker Goans on December 31, 1979 in Miami, Okla.

Survivors include his wife Loretta of the home in Geuda Springs; five sons Robert Walton and Carl Walton of Tonkawa, Okla., Timothy Walton of Blackwell, Okla. Kenny Walton of Ponca City, Okla., and Donald Walton, Jr. of Tonkawa, Okla.; one daughter Kathy Beals of Ponca City, Okla.; three step-sons Jerry Lee Goans of Wellington, Terry Goans and Robert Goans both of Geuda Springs; two step-daughters Gayla Just of Piedmont, Okla. and Tina Collins of Geuda Springs; two brothers Ronnie Walton of Wellington, Dale Walton of Sedan; half-brother John Pringle of South Dakota; three sisters Pat Ripper of Braman, Okla., Lois Martin of Lyons, Kan., and Linda Mercer of Texas; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step-father Roy Wade; one brother Tim Walton; one sister, June Armstrong.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 30, 2004, at the Geuda Springs Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

A memorial has been established with the Sedgwick County Zoo, contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
