Frank Stocking

Frank Stocking, former Mayfield resident, passed away in Napa, Calif., on Nov. 2, 2004, with family members at his side. Born in Mayfield to Elmer and Maud Stocking on February 26, 1913, Frank, also known to his friends as "Pike," grew up on the family farm west of Mayfield with his seven brothers and sisters.

Frank is survived by his wife, Loeta, of Napa, Calif.; daughters Suzanne Love, Modesto, Calif., Shirley Stickney, Assisi, Italy, and Marsha Niemann, Napa, Calif., and 3 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, one brother, Herbert Stocking, Joplin, Mo., and one sister, Mary Metcalf, Colorado Springs, Colo., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Mayfield and Wellington area.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Maud, brothers George, Harold F. "Jiggs" Sr., Carl, and sisters, Alma Yearout, Margaret "Peggy" Glaze, and Frances Hill.

Frank began his education in a one-room schoolhouse near Mayfield. He attended college at Pittsburg State Teacher's College where he met his future wife, Loeta, and while in college, he worked in a dairy milking cows to pay for his education. He received his bachelor's degree at Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1937. He received his master's degree at Columbia University in New York City in 1940, and in 1952 he completed the coursework for a doctorate in education at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Frank's career in education began at age 18 as a teacher in the Pleasant Valley School that was located in the corner of his father's farm west of Mayfield, the same one-room schoolhouse that he attended while growing up. Frank went on to serve as teacher, principal, and superintendent in various school districts in Kansas, teaching in Cedar Vale and serving Superintendent of Schools in Peru, Kan.

Frank was an excellent ball player, and while he was teaching in Cedarvale, one of the local Mayfield pilots flew to Cedarvale and brought Frank home to play in the ball tournament.

Frank joined the Navy in 1942 and taught Math at the Naval Academy Prep School, then served as assistant gunnery officer in charge of the gun crew and fire control officer on board the USS Terry, a destroyer deployed to the Pacific from 1944 to 1945. He also served as chaplain on board. After the war, Frank went on to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve until he retired as a Captain in 1972.

After the war, Frank was Director of the Wesley Foundation in Pittsburg, Kan., and then served as Principal in Osawatomie, Kan. He moved to California with his wife and 3 daughters in 1951 to work on his doctorate and served as principal of Gilroy Union High School for 2 years. He then moved to Lodi, where he was principal of Lodi Union High School for 12 years, from 1954 - 1966. During this time the high school grew from a single campus to a split campus, with freshmen and sophomores at the West Campus and juniors and seniors at the East Campus.

In Lodi he was active in Rotary Club and a dynamic member of the Methodist Church, where he served as president of the Methodist Men's Club and was youth group advisor for many years. He continued to teach Sunday school, a service he began at age 15 and continued until he was 85 years old. Frank was also president for 10 years of the California Interscholastic Federation for Sac-Joaquin section.

Frank ended his formal career as an educator as principal of Terra Linda High School in San Rafael from 1966-1974. After retiring from education Frank served as lay minister at Hayward United Methodist Church from 1974-1980. Moving to Napa in 1980 he continued to take an active role in serving the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and spending hours visiting the sick and shut-ins. His deepening concern for the elderly led him, as president of the Napa Housing Foundation, to dedicate himself to the Napa Creek Manor project, making affordable housing for seniors a reality in Napa.

Throughout his life, Frank filled positions of leadership and service in his church and in the community. In recognition of this, the Rotary Club of Terra Linda named him a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation of "tangible and significant assistance given for furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world." Frank inspired and encouraged many through his words and deeds, and will be remembered lovingly by all whose lives he touched.

Friends are invited to a memorial service to be held at the First United Methodist Church, 625 Randolph Street, Napa, Calif., at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2004. A reception will follow immediately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Frank Stocking Memorial Scholarship Fund, West America Bank, North Napa Branch, One Financial Plaza, Napa, Calif. 94558.
