Lula Lee Renick, 77, Holden, Mo., passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Warrensburg Manor Care Center, Warrensburg, Mo. services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 at Ben Cast & Son - Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment at Blackwater Cemetery, Holden.

She is survived by one son, John Thomas Cantrell, KCK; two daughters, Linda Gail Watson and Jerri Jo Goldsmith, both of Holden, Mo.; two sisters, Frances Cline, Kansas City, Mo., and Peggy Webber, Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Emily L. Sercer

Emily L. Sercer, 79, Kansas City, Kan., passed away peacefully at home with her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at St. John Baptist Catholic Church. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Skradski Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be said at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to St. John's Church.

She is survived by two sons, Charles D. Sercer, KCK, and Terrence Lee Sercer, Ft. Scott, Kan.; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Helen Horvat, Barbara Carroll, both of KCK; Rose Waller, St. Paul, Minn., Ann Theno, Evergreen, Colo.; three brothers, John Horvat, Lansing, Kan.; the Rev. Matt J. Horvat and the Rev. Frank M. Horvat, both of KCK.

Maedella Summers Boone

Maedella Summers Boone, a former teacher, was born in Chandler, Okla. She was the youngest of 10 children, five boys and five girls born to Henry and Della Summers.

She graduated from Douglass High School in Chandler, Okla., she attended Kansas State College in Pittsburgh, Kan., with a bachelor and master's degrees in physical education. She was an instructor of health and physical education at Northeast Junior High School from 1936- to 1952. She then became a social worker with the Kansas State Child Welfare Department processing, screening and supervising adoptions. She was the director of Supplemental Security Income Outreach Programs for seven counties, served on the Board of Directors for Wyandotte County Red Cross and was a swimming instructor for the Kansas City Recreation Department. She coordinated weddings and social events and was active in the community, professional and social clubs.

She was an active member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kansas City. Maedella was married to Donald L. Boone whom preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the church.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19 at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 18th Street and Washington Boulevard. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Myra S. Garlet

Myra S. Garlet, 91, Lee's Summit, Mo., died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the John Knox Village Care Center. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at the Highland Park Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the John Knox Hospice

Mrs. Garlet was born in KCK. She was preceded in death by her husband James H. Garlet Jr. in 2000.

She is survived by one daughter, Judy Walden, Raymore, Mo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Helen M. (Ruzich) Kalcic

Helen M. (Ruzich) Kalcic, 82, Kansas City, Kan., passed away Friday, June 13, 2003, at Royal Terrace Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 53rd Street and Leavenworth Road. Entombment in Mt. Calvary Mausoleum. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where the Rosary will be said at 7: 30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Catholic Community Hospice, 2220 Central Ave. KCK.

Helen was born in KCK on Aug. 6, 1920. She and her husband Frank, were independent carriers for the Kansas City Star for 33 years. After retiring from the Star, Helen worked for the Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools in the cafeteria of Washington High School. She was known as the "bread lady" as she baked all their bread, cinnamon rolls and cookies. She was a member of Christ the King Church, the Holy Name Society, the Altar Society and the Don Lipovac Booster Club.

Helen will always be remembered as a devoted, loving, caring wife, mother grandmother and great-grandmother. Her greatest joys in life were dancing, laughing with her husband and family, working out in the yard with Frank, caring for her family and neighbors, baking bread, tending her garden and her faith in God.

Anyone fortunate enough to know Helen was touched by her genuine caring nature, sense of humor and her ability to make bright even the gloomiest of times. Kansas City has lost one of its premiere bakers. No perfume has ever been sweeter than the scent of Helen's fresh breads baking in the oven. She will be remembered for her love of life, her gentle nature and her uncanny knack of making others see the best in themselves.

She was preceded in death by Frank, her loving husband of 61 years, her great-granddaughter, Taryn Flory, four sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by one sister Frances Sweitzer; son and daughters-in-law Frank L. and Irma Kalcic, North Kansas City, Mo., Steve and Kathy Kalcic, Plano, Texas, Ron and Pat Kalcic, Louisburg, Kan.; one daughter, Judy Carter, Wilmington, N.C., one daughter and son-ins-law, Nettie and Bruce Johnson, Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Deepest appreciation goes to Catholic Charities Hospice, especially to Liz Montgomery and Elaine Brown, whose care and support meant so such to Helen's family.

Robert Duane Pollock

Robert Duane Pollock, 55, Kansas City, Kan., passed away June 13, 2003, at his home in Merriam Hall. Burial will be in Thayer Cemetery, Thayer, Kan.

Dorothy P. Vandenburg

Dorothy P. Vandenburg, 88, Houston, Texas, formerly of Emporia, Kan., passed away June 12, 2003, in Webster, Texas. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the Highland Park Funeral Home. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Vandenburg was preceded in death by her husband Harold W. Vandenburg.

She is survived by two daughters, Grace Fuller, Kansas City, Kan., and Shirley Sharron, Houston; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy E. Wheeler

Dorothy E. Wheeler, 79, Kansas City, Kan., died June 11, 2003, at Providence Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the Thatcher Chapel. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. June 17 at the chapel. Burial in Ft. Leavenworth.

She was a beautician assistant in a beauty shop.

Survivors include one daughter, Foy Henderson, KCK.

Rose Ann Easterbrook

Rose Ann (Mickey) Abernathy Easterbrook, 54, Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Kansas City, Kan., passed away Aug. 2, 2003. Memorial services at a later date.

Ms. Easterbrook was born March 21, 1948, in KCK. She was a lifelong resident of KCK before moving to Florida.

She is survived by one son, James Robert Easterbrook, Lakeland; two brothers, Dr. Robert Abernathy and Fred Abernathy; and many nieces and nephews.

Marcella E. Hays

Marcella E. Hays, 82, Independence, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Monterey Park Nursing Center. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at New Salem Cemetery, Independence. A "Celebration of Life" in honor of Marcella will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Washington Forever Funeral Home, 614 Brookside, Independence. Cremation. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Max Baer Heart Fund in care of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Milwaukee, Wisc. Family and friends may leave messages of condolences at www.forevernetwork.com.

Marcella was born July 3, 1921, in Tulsa, Okla., to Elmer Thomas and Vey Cloe (Pearson) Lively. She met and married Thomas Leonard Hays on Oct. 9, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan., and she eventually made her home in the Independence area. She was employed as a postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service before her retirement. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary, all of Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Her parents, one son, two grandsons and one great-granddaughter preceded her into heaven.

Marcella is survived by two sons, William A. Hays and Robert D. Hays, both of Independence; one daughter, Marcella A. Oliver, Independence; three brothers, Raymond L. Lively, Los Angeles, Robert A. Liveley and Elmer T. Lively, both of Mission, Texas; two sisters, Alice L. White, Los Angeles and Wanetta Farr, KCK; 19 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

James F. Howe

James F. Howe, 64, Kansas City, Kan., passed away July 30, 2003, at the VA Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Howe was born Sept. 20. 1938, in Topeka, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, Eva A. Howe, of the home; one son, David L. Howe, of the home; two daughters, Anna M. Smith, Camdenton, Mo., and Jeanette R. Howe, of the home; and four grandchildren.

Augusta M. Myers

August M. Myers, 90, Kansas City, Kan., died Aug. 6, 2003, at the home. Services will be 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Mason Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 21, 1912, in KCK. She was a member of the Mason Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Harold Waters (Terrie), Denver; and four daughters, Lila Waters, KCK, Margie Thompson, Aurora, Colo., and Marian Griffin, Kansas City, Mo.

Jose Audon Calderon

Jose Audon Calderon, 8, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at St. Joseph-St. Benedict Catholic Church, Eighth and Mill streets, KCK. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, KCK.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Chapel, 703 N. 10th St., KCK.

Jose, a resident of Kansas City, Kan., was born Nov. 24, 1994, in Kansas City, Mo.

Survivors include his mother, Veronica Rodriques; his father, Jose A. Calderon Sr.; and three brothers, Jesse Calderon, Giovanni Calderon and Anthony Calderon, all of Kansas City, Kan.

Isaac Jerome Manlove Jr.

Isaac Jerome Manlove Jr. passed away Oct. 4, 2003, at Providence Medical Center.

Manlove was born Jan. 9, 1916, in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kan., to Isaac Jasper Manlove and Lucy Neely Manlove.

He attended Lincoln Grade School and graduated from Sumner High School, class of 1933.

"I.J." and "Bish," as he was affectionately known by and called by those who knew him and loved him, met Madlyn G. Hardiman, and later they were united in marriage on March 1, 1937, in Indepedence, Mo.

"I.J." worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail clerk, retiring after 25 years of service.

He was honored to be in the Who's Who Almanac in 1999:

"Mr. Manlove is the manager of Lawrence A. Jones and Sons Funeral Chapels. He is a professionally qualified and highly experienced mortuary science professional with over 57 years of significant management and funeral directing experience gained through various funeral homes throughout Kansas and Missouri. He has organized and lectured students and apprentices on embalming and funeral directing coursees, including restorative art, cosmetology and embalming techniques. Additionally, he owned and operated his own funeral home. Mr. Manlove completed his training at Williams Institute of Embalming, Kansas City, 1936. He has since completed numerous training seminars on mortuary science. Mr. Manlove received the award for 50 years of service from the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, Kansas Funeral Directors Association, and Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association. He received the Man of the Year award from the Missouri-Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers in 1964. Mr. Manlove is the past president of the Missouri-Kansas Funeral Directors Association."

He was a lifetime member of the Missouri State Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association and Mo-Kan Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, KFDA, NFDMA and NFDA.

He leaves to cherish his memory: His children, Harold J. Manlove (Katherine), Madlyn A. Chinn (Talmadge Sr.), Dionne P. Cox, Jeron L. Manlove (Beverly), Chevonne Manlove McMurray (Michael); sister, Margaret Scroggins; sister and brother-in-law, Kaye and Courtland Bivens; 11 grandchildren; a host of great-greandchidlren; nieces, nephews, Lawrence A. Jones family, and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3024 N. 53rd St. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Connie M. Foster

Connie M. Foster, 51, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at her home in Kansas City, Kan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Connie was born Sept. 13, 1952, and was a lifelong area resident. She had been in nursing for may years, working for Bethany Medical Center, Golden Age Lodge and most recently for a visiting nurse association. She also supervised a temporary labor group at Kemper Arena.

Survivors include one son, John D. Foster, Basehor, Kan.; one daughter, Jennifer R. Foster, Denver; her mother, Freida N. Howerton, Basehor; five brothers and four sisters.
