ELDA E. MEHL

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Elda Elizabeth Mehl, 79, a former Liberal resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000.

She was born March 16, 1920, to Pierre Collie and Bertha (Francisco) Egbert on a ranch four miles west of Cimarron.

She married Otto J. Mehl in August 1941. He survives.

She attended grade school and high school in Ingalls, graduating in 1936. She entered nurses training at St. Anthony's School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1940.

She worked at Epworth Hospital in Liberal for several years. She worked as an office manager for Mehl Concrete Co. Inc., where her husband worked for 27 years in the concrete construction and ready-mixed concrete business. She and her husband sold the business in 1972.

She and her family moved to a farm west of Liberal in 1973, where they were engaged in farming and livestock operations. She and her husband moved to Grand Island in 1995.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Liberal and a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. She was active in mission work of all kinds, as long as her health permitted.

She was a Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies included oil painting, making quilts and china painting.

Other survivors include two sons, Earl Mehl, Brunswick, Ga., and Gary Mehl, Grand Island; one brother, Earl Egbert, Grand Junction, Colo.; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Ray, Buford, Ora, Merle, Gilbert and one infant brother; and one granddaughter, Lori Dawn.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Liberal, with the Revs. Curt Holzworth and David Bagwell presiding.

A private burial service preceded the memorial service, at the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church in Balko, Okla.

Friends may call at the Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal from 1 to 9 p.m. today. The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to the Gideon International in care of Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd St., Liberal, KS 67901.

BEN KENNEDY

ELKHART -- Ben Kennedy, 61, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Dec. 5, 1938, to Bennett Zack and Kathryn Claire (Davis) Kennedy in Amarillo, Texas.

He married Mary Kathryn Blume Dec. 10, 1976, in Austin, Texas. She survives.

He had been a resident of Elkhart since 1997. He provided consulting and accounting services for municipal governments.

He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge, the Christian Church and the Chamber of Commerce, all in Elkhart.

Survivors include one son, Josh Lynn Kennedy, Elkhart; four daughters, Kasi Allison Kennedy and Kathleen Suzanne Kennedy, both of Austin, Amanda Kathryn Kennedy, Denton, Texas, and Sarah Bethany Kennedy, Elkhart; one brother, Sam Kennedy, San Antonio, Texas; and one sister, Jo Lynn Warrick, Thornton, Colo.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Elkhart, with the Revs. Ron Wilson and Terrell Giddens presiding.

Cremains will be scattered at a later date.

The family suggests memorials to the Cardiac Transplant Support Group Memorial in care of Harrell Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 57950.

W.D. FLETCHER

ELKHART -- W.D. Fletcher, 87, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

He was born Oct. 10, 1912, to James Edward and Norah Agnes (Jefferis) Fletcher in Centerview.

He married Bernice Pauline Bookstore Feb. 27, 1938, in St. John. She died Jan. 15, 1999.

He had been a resident of Elkhart since 1938. He was a farmer.

Survivors include one son, Bill Fletcher Jr., Hugoton; one daughter, Patricia Morey, Hugoton; one sister, Alsea Britton, Lewis; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Church of God in Elkhart, with the Rev. Tony Siebels presiding. Burial will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Harrell Funeral Home in Elkhart.

The family suggests memorials to the Church of God in Elkhart.

CAROL HARVEY

LIBERAL -- Carol Harvey, 46, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita following an extended illness.

She was born April 11, 1953, to Mitch and Beth (Tucker) Clemons in Honolulu, Hawaii.

She married Joe Harvey May 18, 1991, in Liberal. He survives.

She graduated from the Millington, Tenn. High School in 1971. She lived in Memphis, Tenn., and Denver, Colo., before moving to Liberal in 1987.

She worked for the City of Liberal in the water department, for the City Building Inspection Office and as a secretary to the City Manager for several years. She was an EMT and a volunteer firefighter.

She was a member of the Liberal Noon Lions Club where had serves as a member of the board for several years and was serving as secretary. She was a member of the Liberal Area Rape Crisis Center Board. She served on the Seward County Fire Board and was co-owner and bookkeeper for Harvey Electric in Liberal.

Other survivors include two daughters, Amber DeLaine Hinson, Joplin, Mo., and Jade Harvey, Liberal; her parents of Munford, Tenn.; two brothers, Johnny Clemons, Brownsville, Tenn., and Mitch Clemons, Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Sharon Cleveland, Jacksonville, Fla.; her grandmother, Effie Tucker, Crossville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin Hinton; and her father and mother-in-law, Wilbur and June Harvey, Liberal.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Lynda Clemons.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Central Christian Church in Liberal, with the Rev. David Woods presiding.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

The family suggests memorials to the Carol Harvey Memorial Fund, in care of Citizens State Bank in Liberal, or in care of Miller Mortuary, P.O. Box 826, Liberal, KS 67905.

CHARLES RAHM

LAKIN -- Charles Jacob Franklin Rahm, 82, former Liberal resident, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

He was born June 30, 1917, to Jacob and Hazel (Robinson) Rahm in Enid, Okla.

He married Mary Bodenhamer Sept. 18, 1942, in El Reno, Okla. She survives.

He grew up in the Enid and Kremlin, Okla. area. He attended school in Kremlin and later graduated in 1936 from high school in Enid. He attended college in Okmulgee, Okla.

He served in the United States Air Corp during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He served most of his time in France. He returned to the Enid area after his time in the service, where he began working for newspapers in the area.

He moved to Liberal in 1951, where he worked for the Southwest Daily Times until his retirement in 1989. He moved back to Enid in 1991. He had been a resident of Lakin since 1997.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kremlin and later a member of the First United Methodist Church in Enid.

His hobbies included fishing, camping and doing handyman work.

Other survivors include one daughter, Charla Grauberger and husband, Ron, Deerfield; one brother, Henry "Hank" Rahm and wife, Lela, Enid; one sister-in-law, Rosalie Rahm, Enid; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Daniel Rahm.

Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Deerfield with the Rev. Warren Hett presiding. Burial followed at the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield.

The family suggests memorials to the High Plains Special Care Unit or to the donor's choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

LLOYD J. COOPER

OMAHA, Neb. -- Lloyd J. Cooper, 71, father of Liberal resident Cindi Knudsen, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Neb.

He was a member of the Timothy Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, Council Bluffs; two daughters, Cindi Knudsen and husband, John, Liberal, and Dede Schnuettgen and husband, Steve, Defiance, Iowa; two sons, Brad Cooper, Omaha, and Randy Cooper and wife, Sheri, Jackson, Tenn.; one brother, Merle and wife, Betty, Littleton, Colo.; grandchildren, Luke Knudsen, Amanda Knudsen, Sara Schnuettgen, Benjamin Cooper and Heidi Cooper and husband, Coty; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were at 10 a.m. Dec. 31, 1999, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. Burial followed at Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorials to the St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 3112 W. Broadway, Council Bluffs, NE.

Services were under the direction of Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home in Omaha.

VERL DEAN MANTZKE

LIBERAL -- Verl Dean Mantzke, 72, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born June 1, 1927, to Frank A. and Mollie M. (Nichols) Mantzke in rural Stevens County.

He married Doris Lea Rich Aug. 17, 1949, in Clayton, N.M. She survives.

He was a lifetime resident of Stevens County. He was a farmer and a school bus driver for the Hugoton School system.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hugoton.

Other survivors include one son, Michael Mantzke and wife, Toni, Hugoton; one daughter, RoGlenda Coulter and husband, Rex, Hugoton; two brothers, Frankie Mantzke, Fort Smith, Ark., and Larry Mantzke, Hugoton; one sister, Francine Colella, Longmont, Colo.; and six grandchildren, Stacie Robertson, Travis Coulter, Lance Mantzke, Tyler Mantzke, Nikki Mantzke and Mikayla Mantzke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rickey Mantzke; and two sisters, Phyllis Traver and Treva Mantzke.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Assembly of God Church in Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding. Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Services are under the direction of Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

RACHEL KAE WHALEY

Johnson -- Rachel Kae Whaley, infant, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Johnson.

She was born Nov. 1, 1999, to Scott G. and Lori (Fischer) Whaley, in Liberal. They survive.

Other survivors include one brother, Zachary Whaley of the home; grandparents, Gerald and Karen Fischer, Scranton, and Charles and Bernice Whaley, Shawnee; great-grandmother, Margaret Calvert, Osage City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ in

Ulysses, with the Rev. Paul Wingfield presiding. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Friends may visit until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. The family will be present until 8 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials to the Ronald McDonald House in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.
