CHARLES D. GOODNIGHT

MEADE -- Charles Donald "Don" Goodnight, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Via Christi Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

He was born March 30, 1928, to Olis G. and Iona (McKinney) Goodnight Sr. in Ashland.

He married Ellen Painter June 1, 1952, at her parents ranch home southeast of Meade. She survives.

He graduated from Englewood High School in 1946 and from Ponca City School of Aeronautics in 1950.

He served in the United States Navy.

He was a lifetime resident of the Englewood and Meade area, moving to Meade in 1956. He was a pilot instructor and a farmer.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Meade County Historical Assoc., both in Meade. He served on the board of directors of the Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal and the Kansas State Historical Society. He served on the board of directors of the Pioneer/Krier Museum and was a committee member of Harold Krier Air Show, both in Ashland. He was co-founder of the Cowboy Heritage Festival and a member of the Boot Hill Museum Assoc., both in Dodge City. He was an honorary member of the Old Trail Drivers Assoc. in San Antonio, Texas, and a volunteer FAA Flight Safety Councilor.

Other survivors include three sons, Dr. Gary D. Goodnight, Abilene, Texas, T. Kim Goodnight, Dodge City, and Steven L. Goodnight, Englewood; one daughter, Kayla Goodnight, Phoenix; two brothers, Olis G. Goodnight Jr., Englewood, and twin F. Ronald Goodnight, Lakin; one sister, Lila Hays, Rolla; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, A.G. Goodnight and John Goodnight.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Meade First Baptist Church in Meade with the Rev. Harry Fink presiding. Burial will follow at the Englewood Cemetery in Englewood.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

The family suggests memorials to the Meade County Historical Society, the Liberal Air Museum or the Cowboy Heritage Festival in Dodge City, in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box F, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

LUTHER M. SIMON

AZLE, Texas -- Luther M. Simon, 93, former Texas County, Okla. resident, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Azle.

He was born Dec. 16, 1906, in Texas County.

He was a longtime resident of Mulvane, where he owned and operated Simon Auto Service until 1964.

He and his wife were on-site caretakers of Camp Blue Haven in Las Vegas, N.M. until 1974. He moved to Portales, N.M. where he and his wife worked in the Christian Children's Home until 1978. He moved to Azle in 1994.

Survivors include one son, Dwayne Simon and wife, Evelyn, Azle; one daughter, Ann Young and husband, Lester, Abilene; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby B. Simon. She died in April of 1986.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Azle Church of Christ in Azle. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Richland Cemetery in Douglass.

Services are under the direction of Biggers Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas.

ELMER F. LOEWEN

MOSCOW -- Elmer Franklin Loewen, 65, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at his country home near Moscow.

He was born April 22, 1934, to William H. and Lizzie Rose (Siebert) Loewen in Goessel.

He married Betty Louise Fox Aug. 26, 1956, at her parent's home near Moscow. She survives.

He moved to Ulysses with his family as a teenager and graduated from the Ulysses High School. He has been a resident of Moscow for the past 43 years.

He and his wife lived near Moscow after their marriage for one year.

He entered the United States Army, where he served for two years. He joined the Fox family after his return from the service in the business of farming, until his retirement a few years ago.

He was a charter president of the Moscow Lions Club, a Boy Scout leader for many years, a 4-H leader and had served on the Stevens County Fair Board for more than 25 years.

He was instrumental in getting the Moscow Senior Citizen's Building, donating many hours of labor. His hobbies included team roping and shooting pool.

Other survivors include one son, Jace Kelly, Moscow; one daughter, Melonie Fisher and husband, Bryan, Duncan, Okla.; his mother of Ulysses; two brothers, Alie Loewen, Ulysses, and Melville Loewen, Woodland Park, Colo.; four sisters, Lovine Givan, San Antonio, Texas, Verna Lewis and Wanda Denning, both of Denver, and Agnes Kilgore, McMinnville, Ore.; four grandchildren, Sara Cross, Garden City, Chantry Loewen, Moscow, Chase and Blake Fisher, Duncan; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; one brother, Pete; and his father.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Moscow United Methodist Church in Moscow, with the Rev. Mora presiding. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery in Moscow.

Friends may call at Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal until 9 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials to the Moscow Senior Citizens and Spanish Peaks Boy Scout Ranch, in care of Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

FRED C.C. ANDERSON

HUGOTON -- Fred C.C. Anderson, 87, died today at the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

Funeral services are pending with Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

EUGENE A. CRAWFORD

BIG SPRINGS, Texas -- Eugene A. "Gene" Crawford, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at a veteran's hospital in Big Springs.

He was born July 18, 1922, in Rolla.

He married Pauline Reams in 1948 in Ulysses. She died July 5, 1997.

He attended school in Rolla. He was employed by Northern Natural Gas Co., in Hugoton and Hobbs, N.M., where he retired after 28 years.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Rolla, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hugoton and the American Legion in Hobbs.

He was a resident of Hobbs for 24 years.

He served in the United States Army for three and a half years, serving two years in Manila, Philippines, and the rest in the United States.

Survivors include one son, Todd and his wife, Judy, Garden City; two sisters, Ruby Arnold, Sublette, and Helen Hamilton, Hugoton; two grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Crawford, both of Garden City; one niece, Linda Park, Garden City; two nephews, Robert A. Arnold, Belle Vista, Ark., and Kenneth W. Hamilton, Hugoton.

Graveside military services by the Fort Riley Color Guard will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.

Cremation was done through the direction of Valley, Pickle and Welch Funeral Home in Big Springs.

ALMA L. CALVERT

WAKEENEY -- Alma L. Calvert, 82, sister of Billie Harrel, Liberal, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney.

She was born Sept. 5, 1917, to Garner Wilson and Celia Jean (Semler) Wilson in Coldwater.

She married Ralph Calvert May 18, 1937 in Los Angeles. He survives.

She graduated from the Trego Community High School in 1935, Wakeeney. She moved back to Wakeeney from Arkansas in 1953.

She was a homemaker and the co-owner/operator of the Bryant Motel in Wakeeney.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Locust Club, various bridge clubs, the Presbyterian Women and Midweek Campers, all of Wakeeney.

Other survivors include one daughter, Melinda Nemechek, Conifer, Colo.; one sister, Billie Harrel, Liberal; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Schmitt Funeral Home in Wakeeney with the Rev. Marilyn Gamm presiding. Burial will follow at the Wakeeney City Cemetery in Wakeeney.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the Schmitt Funeral Home in Wakeeney.

The family suggests memorials to the Presbyterian Church in Wakeeney.

FRED C. ANDERSON

HUGOTON -- Fred C. Anderson, 87, Hugoton, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

He was born April 30, 1912, to George W. and Ella May (Waite) Anderson near Woods in Stevens County.

He was a retired farmer and worked for Northern Natural Gas Co.

He was a member of First Christian Church. He was past master and a life member of Hugoton Masonic Lodge No. 406 AF and AM.

He married Dorothy Fern Olinger Aug. 15, 1933 at Hugoton. She survives.

Survivors also include three sons, Dwayne Anderson, Hugoton, Larry Anderson, Ulysses, and Robert Anderson, Amarillo, Texas; one daughter, Barbara Palmer, Hugoton; one brother, E. Budd Anderson, Hugoton; and five sisters including her twin, Fanny Kagarice, and Avanell Gaskell and Deanie Hall, all of Hugoton, Avis Curtis, Moscow, and Inez Ramey, Gainsville, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Owen, Deward, Vester and A. Jay; and five sisters, Murland Crawford, Marie Butcher, Agnes Allen, Illa Fern Anderson and Vella Stoops.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey, Steven Anderson and Vernon Anderson presiding.

Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery with Masonic graveside service by Masonic Lodge No. 496 AF and AM.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, Hugoton.

ALEJANDRO LOPEZ CONTRERAS

Alejandro Lopez Contreras, one-day-old infant, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He is survived by his parents, Jose Alejandro Lopez and Yesenia Lopez Contreras, Liberal, and his maternal grandparents, Jose G. and Maria Contreras, Liberal.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Manuel and Maria De La Cruz Alvarez.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Liberal Cemetery, with the Rev. Emil Dinkel presiding.

Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal.
