ROBERT "BOB" BENTON

Robert "Bob" Benton, 64, Liberal, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 23, 1935, to Lewis Clay and Emma Faye (Davis) Benton in Cherryvale.

He had been a resident of Liberal since 1966, when he moved from Borger, Texas.

He was a graduate of Phillips High School, Phillips, Texas.

He had been employed by Phillips Petroleum for several years. He owned and operated several service stations and owned and managed other businesses in the Liberal area. He also worked for the City of Liberal and Liberal Area Vocational-Technical School.

He had attended First Church of the Nazarene. He was a past director for Kids Inc. He was a past member and one of the first seven of the Liberal Police Reserve. He was a past member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association.

He had been active in the Highway 83 Committee and Redskins Booster Club. He was a member of the Artery Club, and he enjoyed bowling.

He married Virginia Marsh Dec. 12, 1953, in Borger, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Robert Bruce Benton and wife, Kim, Chickasha, Okla., David Blaine Benton and wife, Jana, Greeley, Colo., and Phillip Brent Benton and wife, Lori, Liberal; three daughters, Bobetta Kay Harper and husband, Dale, Liberal, Brenda Sue Benton, Greeley, and Marsha Beth Abbott and husband, Clyde, Turpin, Okla.; one brother, Kenneth Elbert Benton, Borger; 22 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Darrel Benton, and one sister, Geraldine.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Don Patrick presiding. Cremation will take place after the funeral service.

Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and from 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal.

Memorials are suggested to Southwest Kansas Technical School, in care of the funeral home.

GENEVA THORPE

DUMAS, Texas -- Geneva Thorpe, 82, Dumas, Texas, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000 at Memorial Hospital in Dumas.

She was born April 30, 1917, in Kismet. She had been a resident of Dumas since 1966.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Dumas.

She married Wilbur A. Thorpe July 31, 1936, in Salina. He survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Guff Thorpe, Madras, Ore., Bill Thorpe, Arcadia, Fla., and Bob Thorpe, Spearman, Texas; one brother, Joe Laird, Ulysses; two sisters, Esther Woods, Stinnett, Texas, and Vesta Pinkerton, Rogers, Ark.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Dumas, with the Rev. Scott Willingham presiding.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Kismet Cemetery in Kismet, under the direction of Morrison Funeral Directors of Dumas.

Friends may call on the family at 921 Mills in Dumas.

Memorials are suggested to Cal Farley's Boys' Ranch, Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas, 79105-9985.

DOROTHY MAE McGEE

Dorothy Mae McGee, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was a former resident of Hugoton and had most recently lived at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

She was born July 6, 1929, to James Calvin and Ocie Ellen (Knox) McGee in Hugoton.

She is survived by one sister, Dyanna Nowak and husband, Lynn, Liberal, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Birdie Lee.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. Rex Petty presiding. Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and until service time Saturday at Kitch Funeral Home.

BEVERLY ANN DAVIS

PLAINS -- Beverly Ann Davis, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born June 9, 1932, to Lloyd and Isabelle (Yegge) Mulholland in Malvern, Iowa.

She had been a resident of Lodi, Calif., for many years. She moved to Plains in 1998.

She was a retired Hallmark business owner and teacher.

She attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of Friends of the Library, both of Plains.

She married Donald L. Davis Aug. 12, 1955, in Greeley, Colo. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Kim Eakes and husband, Ron, Plains, and Jill

Whippo and husband, Bob, Garden City; her mother, Isabell Ripley, Sweet Home, Ore.; a sister, Jan Wellhauser, Broansville, Ore.; a brother, Walt Mullholland, Sweet Home, Ore.; and five grandchildren, Laura, Kathy and Jason Eakes, all of Plains, and Lucas and Aubrey Whippo, both of Garden City.

She was preceded in death by her father; a son, Brad Davis; and a granddaughter, Kristen Eakes.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Plains, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer presiding.

Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Plains Community Building Fund or the Plains Community Library, in care of Plains State Bank, P.O. Box 38, Plains, KS 67869.

BILL SWEARINGEN

WICHITA -- Bill Swearingen, 81, Wichita, a former resident of Liberal, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Riverside Hospital in Wichita.

Funeral services are pending with Miller Mortuary, Liberal.

MERLIN "SONNY" DeCAMP JR.

WICHITA -- Merlin "Sonny" DeCamp Jr., 63, Wichita, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1936, to Merlin and Cecil (Sharp) DeCamp in Liberal.

He was a retired Air Force staff sergeant.

He married Joyce Edwards Nov. 25, 1956. She died July 3, 1992.

Survivors include three sons, Charles, Denver, Kenneth, Wichita, and Bruce, Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Daryl DeCamp, Liberal; and five sisters, Donna Thomas, Springville, Mo., Jean Carter, Kingman, Ariz., Merlene Webb, Rangley, Colo., Caryl Lewis, Wichita, and Charlotte Hill, Sterling, Colo.

Graveside services were held Monday at Fort Logan, Colo.

EUGENE A. CRAWFORD

BIG SPRINGS, Texas -- Eugene A. "Gene" Crawford, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Big Springs, Texas.

He was born July 18, 1922, in Rolla.

He married Pauline Reams in 1948 in Ulysses. She died July 5, 1997.

He attended school in Rolla. He was employed by Northern Natural Gas Co., in Hugoton and Hobbs, N.M., where he retired after 28 years.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Rolla, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hugoton and the American Legion in Hobbs.

He was a resident of Hobbs for 24 years.

He served in the United States Army for three and a half years, serving two years in Manila, Philippines, and the rest in the United States.

Survivors include one son, Todd and his wife, Judy, Big Springs; two sisters, Ruby Arnold, Sublette, and Helen Hamilton, Hugoton; a grandson, Christopher Crawford, Garden City, and a step-granddaughter, Heather, Big Springs; one niece, Linda Park, Garden City; two nephews, Robert A. Arnold, Belle Vista, Ark., and Kenneth W. Hamilton, Liberal.

Graveside military services by the Fort Riley Color Guard will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.

Cremation was done through the direction of Valley, Pickle and Welch Funeral Home in Big Springs.
