WILLIAM R. "BILL" SWEARINGEN
WICHITA -- William R. "Bill" Swearingen, 81, Wichita, a former Liberal resident, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Riverside Hospital in Wichita.
He was born March 5, 1918, to Richard Murch and Ethel (Wilhelmi) Swearingen at Dayton, Ohio.
He graduated from high school in Indianapolis, Ind., and received a master's degree in animal husbandry from Kansas State University in 1952.
He served his country in the Pacific and European theatres in World War II.
He was a 4-H agent in Pratt for three years. In 1955, he moved to Liberal, where he was an insurance agent for Farm Bureau for 28 years and continued to sell insurance for Jantzen-Elder Insurance Co. until he retired and moved to Wichita in 1991.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion of Liberal. He was 4-H leader in Liberal for many years, and he served as vice commander of Kansas American Legion and as commander of the District American Legion.
He married Dorothy Simmons Feb. 12, 1944, at Manhattan. She preceded him in death Aug. 22, 1995.
Survivors include one son, Richard Swearingen and wife, Kathy, Wheatridge, Colo.; three daughters, Kristi Love and husband, Robert, Guymon, Okla., Penni Engle and husband, Dan, Wichita, and Jenni Henson and husband, Ken, Norwich; 12 grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Edward Simmons and wife, Joan, Salina; and a special nephew, Eric Dorsey and wife, Tyna, Liberal.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janet.
Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Stephen Saville presiding.
Interment with Fort Riley Honor Guard will be at the Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at Miller Mortuary, Liberal. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials are suggested to the Bill Swearingen Memorial Scholarship Fund at First National Bank, in care of the mortuary.
JOHN H. HARDER
MEADE -- John H. Harder, 91, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Meade District Hospital in Meade.
He was born Sept. 15, 1908, to John J.A. and Aganetha (Holzrichter) Harder in rural Meade County.
He had been a resident of Meade County for 89 years. He was a farmer.
He was a member of Emmanuel Mennonite Brethren Church, Meade, and had been a church trustee, council member, Sunday school teacher and sexton of the church cemetery.
He was an MMA insurance adjustor, member of the Pleasant Hill School Board, Logan County Township Election Board and Farm Bureau Board.
He married Elizabeth Brandt, April 14, 1932, at Emmanuel Mennonite Brethren Church in rural Meade. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Robert Harder and wife, Rachel, Pullman, Wash., and Kenneth Harder and wife, Kay, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Betty Lowen and husband, Merle, Ellinwood, and Marlene Smith and her husband, LaVern, Meade; two sisters, Sara Voth, Inman, and Kate Doerksen, Meade; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herman Harder; a sister, Marie Kroeker; and a great-grandchild, Bridgett Unruh.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Meade, with the Rev. LaVern Smith presiding.
Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. today at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade, and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Burial will be at Emmanuel Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to EMB Church or the Beam Senior Center, both of Meade, and may be left in care of the funeral home.
NAOMI B. SIMMONS
HUGOTON -- Naomi B. Simmons, 83, died today at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
Services are pending with Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
CLYDE T. BOYD
MEADE -- Clyde T. Boyd, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at the Meade District Hospital, Meade.
He was born Jan. 30, 1914, to Richard Willis and Nettie Pearl (Isbell) Boyd in Hodgensville, Ky.
He moved to Meade as a young child and graduated from Meade High School in 1934. He was a farmer.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Meade and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He married Margaret Helen Hantla in Meade. She died Feb. 19, 1997.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Berkley, and a sister, Dorinda.
Survivors include two sons, Larry, Meade and Terry, Garden City; two sisters, Ada L. Federer, Wesloco, Texas, and June Anderson, Liberal; and several grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary Chapel, Meade, with the Rev. Harry Fink presiding. There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Meade.
Memorials are suggested to the Beam Senior Center.
RUBY FAYE SCHIELD
PLAINS -- Ruby Faye Schield, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 at the Morton County Health System, Elkhart.
She was born August 20, 1914, to Resolve and Allie May (Dellinger) Hoskinson in Stevens County.
She was a resident of Plains for 70 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Saint Patrick Catholic Church of Plains.
She married Pete Joe Schield in Meade. He died Aug. 22, 1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Hardaway, Meade; two sons, Carl Schield, Greensburg, and Edward Schield, Fowler; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Eugene and Robert Schield, and a granddaughter.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church,
Plains, with the Rev. Zeno YeSwe presiding. Friends may call 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade. Burial will be in the Plains Cemetary, Plains.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association. These gifts may be left at the funeral home.
RICHARD "RICK" BAKER
TURPIN -- Richard "Rick" Baker, 49, died Jan. 14, 2000, at his residence in Turpin.
He was born March 16, 1950 to Arthur L. and Doris (Gaddard) Baker in Sidney, NE.
He was the parts manager for Chrysler Corner. He was a member of the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church of Liberal. He served in the U.S. Army for 18 years.
He married Mary Ann (Kost) Musgrave July 29, 1994 in Liberal. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Richard Baker Jr., and wife Melinda, Liberal, Douglas Grant Baker and wife Cheryl, Balko, Okla.; a step-son, Jay Musgrave, Liberal; two step-daughters, Tammy Jantzen, Liberal, and Stacy Gowan, Oklahoma city; two brothers, Jim Baker, McPherson and Ron Baker, Yardley, Pa; two sisters, Sandy Horseman, Porsha, Ark., and Doris Gaddard, Lubock, Texas; a half-sister, Jackie Nelson, Denver.; a step-mother, Jean Baker, Stillwell, Okla.; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant half-sister, Teresa Baker.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Liberal. The Rev. Wyatt Carpenter will be presiding. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at Kitch Funeral Home from 1 p.m until 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday.

HUGOTON -- Tina Joy Leonard, 59, died Jan. 14, 2000 at her home in rural Hugoton.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Pauls' Funeral Home in Hugoton.
LOLLEE MELVA FOLGER
HUGOTON -- Lollee Melva Folger, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at I.H.S. Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
She was born Jan. 6, 1921, to Roy M. and Leona M. (Kerns) Swan in Hugoton.
She lived in Amarillo for one and one half years, moving there from Sun Lakes Ariz. She had also lived in Pharr, Texas. She lived in Hugoton before 1974.
She was a homemaker and business bookkeeper for Broadus Chevrolet, Coulter Implement and Kramer Nordling.
She was a member of the Christian Church in Amarillo, the First Christian Church in Hugoton and the bowling association.
Survivors include one daughter, Voncele Bowen and her husband, Richard, Ulysses; two sisters, Maxine Dewey, Borger, Texas, and Luvada Coulter, Pharr; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m, Wednesday at Paul's Memorial Chapel in Hugoton with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
TINA JOY LEONARD
HUGOTON -- Tina Joy Leonard, 59, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at her home in rural Hugoton.
She was born Jan. 13, 1941, to Arthur and Frieda O. (Winkler) Lofland in Liberal.
She married Bill Leonard June 5, 1960, in Liberal. He survives.
She was a resident of Hugoton for 40 years. She was a homemaker and a horticulturist, raising tomatoes all year.
She was a 4-H Leader, a member of the Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Big Bow, the Kansas Genealogical Society, Women Involved in Farm Enterprise and the Santa Fe Trail Association.
Other survivors include one son, William L. Leonard, Hugoton; one daughter, Christina VanZant, Sublette; her mother, Frieda Lofland, Liberal; one brother, Udell Lofland, Liberal; two sisters, Myrna Smith, Manhattan, and Harriett Arnett, Liberal; and five grandchildren, Colby Leonard, Ahley Leonard, T. J. Van Zant, Mandy VanZant and Bobby Ewing.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy K. Ewing; one granddaughter, Allison M. Ewing and one grandson, Jason D. Ewing.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Big Bow with the Revs. Tom Boese and W.O. Boomer presiding. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
