MARTHA A. SMITH
Martha A. Smith, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at her home in Liberal.
She was born April 2, 1926, to Shannon P. and Anna D. (Hartman) Russell in New Mexico.
She graduated from high school in 1943 at LaJunta, Colo. She worked in local canning factories and later she was a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward in LaJunta for more than 20 years.
She moved to Liberal in 1986 and worked for Wal-Mart and LaFonda Motel for several years.
She was a member of South Church of God, Liberal, and the LaJunta Fireman Ladies Auxiliary.
She married Wayne W. Smith July 8, 1944, at Abilene, Texas. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Leslie W. Smith, Las Vegas, Nev., and Gary L. Smith, Liberal; one brother, R.D. Russell, Denver; three grandchildren, Walter, Les and Katrina Smith; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Braden and Brandon Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one son, Larry.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miller Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. David Hellmig presiding.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. MST Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery, LaJunta.

MILDRED M. JOHNS
Johnson CITY -- Mildred Maurine "Milly" Johns, 77, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Topeka.
She was born Dec. 4, 1922, to Harold D. and Hazel (Yates) House in Hutchinson.
She married Julius Jesse Johns July 19, 1999, in Morton County. He died July 19, 1999.
She attended Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia and taught elementary grade school in the Penalosa area.
She was a housewife and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. She was involved in the Republican Party as a Stanton County Kansas Federation Republican Women officer, the Stanton County Republican Party Chairwoman and Chairman and Precinct Committee Woman for Stanton Township.
She served as Stanton County Campaign Chairman for many successful local, state and national republican politicians including Gov. Bill Graves, Sen. Pat Roberts and Congressman Jerry Moran.
She had diabetes and had been a test patient for the initial use of Bio-synthetic Human Insulin.
Survivors include one son, Douglas D. Johns, Johnson City; two sisters, Georgia Smith and Helen Marie Varney, both of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, Jason R. Johns, Angers, France,
Logan D.K. Johns, Austin, Texas, Julie M. Johns, Phoenix, Ariz., Amanda D. and Vera B. Johns, both of Johnson City, and Barbara D. Johns, Austin.
She was preceded in death by one son, Julius Lynn Johns; two sisters, Virginia Rapp and Gwen Cockrum.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5. at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo presiding. Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery
in Johnson City.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson City.
The family suggests memorials to the following organizations: the American Diabetes Association Camp Discovery, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association or the First United Methodist Church in Johnson City, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. EUGENE HADSELL
WICHITA -- Eugene Hadsell, 92, a former Liberal resident, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Feb. 17, 1907, to Henry Milton and Della May Hatfield in Pratt County.
He married Sara Jan. 12, 1935, in Garden City. She died April 23, 1998.
He attended the consolidated Eureka School District in the Oklahoma Panhandle and graduated from high school in 1925. He attended the Wichita Business College for two years.
He and his wife lived in Liberal before moving to Hooker, Okla. They resided in Shattuck, Okla., for 54 years, where they moved following the end of World War II.
He moved to Villa Maria in Mulvane Jan. 15, 1999, to be closer to his family.
He worked at the broom corn elevator, the creamery and at the Shattuck Auto Store. He retired Jan. 1, 1977.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Cabrera, Arlington, Texas; one son, Robert E. Hadsell, Mulvane; two brothers, Neal Hadsell, Nixa, Mo., and Horace Hadsell, Wichita; one sister, Doris Van Carr, Wichita; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Burial of the cremated remains will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Liberal Cemetery
in Liberal with Mason Funeral Home in Shattuck in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Villa Maria, 116 South Central, Mulvane, KS 67110.
CLARIS M. ALEXANDER
ELKHART -- Claris Marie Alexander, 68, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.
She was born Sept. 24, 1931, to Francis Ewing and Mary Susan (Daves) Sampier in Clayton, N.M.
She married John B. Alexander June 28, 1952, in Clayton. He died March 15, 1995.
She had been a resident of Elkhart since 1956. She did clerical work at various offices in Elkhart.
Survivors include her mother; one son, Gary Alexander, Albuquerque, N.M.; one daughter, Karen Alexander, Elkhart; one brother, Clifford Sampier, Littleton, Colo.; one sister, Cleta Goolsbey, Clayton, N.M.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of God, with the Rev. Ron Wilson presiding.
Burial will follow at Clayton Memorial Cemetery
in Clayton.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Harrell Funeral Home in Elkhart.

KENNETH "BUD" GIBBS
Kenneth "Bud" Gibbs, 80, died today at the Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal.
IDA MARIE MILES
TOPEKA -- Ida Marie Miles, 98, a former Liberal resident, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.
She was born Sept. 2, 1901, to John and Sarah (Suderman) Warkentin in Newton.
She married B. McKay Miles Dec. 31, 1930, in Watonga, Okla. He died in 1967.
She was a resident of Garden City from 1930 to 1987. She moved to Liberal in 1987, then to Topeka in 1996.
She was a 1924 graduate of Halstead School of Nursing, Halstead. She worked as a nurse in Rochester, Minn.; Chicago, Ill.; Winfield; Halstead; Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Garden City.
She was a member of the Community Congregational Church in Garden City.
Survivors include one son, Charles Miles, Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Ann Kobs, Topeka; one brother, Herman Warkentin, Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Alma Loveless, Geary, Okla.; and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, J.M. Miles, in 1967; and a grandson, Roger Kobs, in 1980.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational Community Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Mike Lake presiding.
Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
Friends may call from 10 to11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

HERSCHEL R. WALLS
ULYSSES -- Herschel R. Walls, 44, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home in rural Grant County.
He was born Oct. 18, 1955, to Charles C. and Betty J. (Carter) Walls in Ulysses.
He was a lifetime resident of Ulysses. He graduated from Ulysses High School and graduated as a diesel mechanic from Southwest Kansas Technical School in Liberal.
He farmed and was a bus mechanic for USD 214 in Ulysses. He was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church and the Grant County Sheriff's Department Reserves, both of Ulysses.
Survivors include his parents of Ulysses; three sisters, Marta Jackson, Deming, N.M., Mary Hamlin, Garden City, and Barbara Clark, Hutchinson; his grandmother, Bernice Carter, Ulysses; two nieces and two nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold presiding. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

IVA WIRTH
OSBORNE -- Iva (Rothenberger) Wirth, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne.
She was born July 16, 1925, in Osborne.
She married Emory Wirth. He died in 1950.
She was a teacher for 45 years and taught business, typing and shorthand in high school and music in elementary school in Waldo, Luray, Hill City, Liberal, Stockton and Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was a member of the Christian Church of Osborne, Delta Kappa Gamma, NEA and KNEA.
Survivors include three sisters, Lucile Romine, Lucas, Peggy Dunn, Red Bluff, Calif., and JoAnn Sommerville, Villa Maria, Argentina.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Clark-Gashaw Mortuary, 238 N. First, Osborne.
Inurnment will be at Osborne Cemetery.
