AMY E. BLAGRAVE

LIBERAL -- Amy E. Blagrave, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at her home in Liberal.

She was born Oct. 9, 1918, to James W. and Helena J. (Gableman) Standley in Osborne County.

She attended school at Delhi. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. She lived for many years in Hays and moved to Liberal in 1979.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Liberal, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Hays.

She married Francis H. Blagrave April 28, 1936, in Lucas. He died April 23, 1979.

Survivors include three sons, Dean Blagrave, Liberal, Steven Blagrave, Tulsa, Okla., and Michael Blagrave, Parris, Calif.; five daughters, Helena Smith, Buffalo, Okla., Marian Cook, Cimarron, Ramona Rogers, Leroy, Jean Nabours, Moscow, and Ruth Shubert, Hays; 33 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Mavis Neary, in October 1999; four brothers; two sisters, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Liberal, with the Rev. Dean Bahr presiding.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Grand Center Cemetery, Waldo.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Miller Mortuary, Liberal.

Memorials are suggested to Southwest Home Care Hospice, Liberal, in care of Miller Mortuary, P.O. Box 826, Liberal, KS 67905-0826.

FAYETTA F. McCARTER

LIBERAL -- Fayetta F. McCarter, 64, Liberal, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center following an extended illness.

She was born May 20, 1935, to Chet and Minnie Pauline (Morgan) Riley in Wilburton.

She graduated from Liberal High School in 1953 and later graduated from cosmetology school in Wichita. She was a hairdresser for many years in Liberal and Guymon, Okla., and she owned and operated El Kan Beauty Salon in Elkhart. She retired in 1985.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Elkhart, past president of the Morton County Hospital Auxiliary, and was past president of the Band Booster Club. She was a member of the Elkhart Women's Bowling League and Rebekah Lodge, and played softball in Elkhart for many years.

She married E.H. "Shorty" McCarter Dec. 5, 1954 at Tucumcari, N.M. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Kent McCarter and wife, Phyllis, Liberal, and Brent McCarter and wife, Elizabeth, Elkhart; three daughters, Gayle Schmidt and husband, Jeff, Liberal, Darla Garrison and husband, Hervey, Guymon, and Carla Thurman and husband, Charles, Coffeyville; two brothers, Clyde Riley, Wichita, and Raymond Vaughan, Bristow, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren, Crystal Schmidt, Guymon, Erick Schmidt, Liberal, April Hicks, Guymon, Adam Garrison, Fort Hood, Texas, Tammy Garrison, Guymon, Scott Garrison, Guymon, Dustin Thurman, Coffeyville, Kyle Thurman, Coffeyville, Kristy Mansell, Liberal, Melissa Furgason, Liberal, Kayla McCarter and Tyler McCarter, both of Elkhart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Otis Vaughan; and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Miller Chapel, Liberal, with the Revs. Ron Wilson and Jim Cunningham officiating.

Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 1-8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until service time Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the Kansas Diabetes Association or to the Morton County Hospital Auxiliary, Elkhart, in care of the Miller Mortuary, P.O. Box 826, Liberal, KS 67905.

JAMES C. BRIGGS

SUBLETTE -- James C. Briggs, 90, former Dodge City resident, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.

He was born Jan. 13, 1910, to Tom C. and Tony Bell (White) Briggs at Mullinville.

He was a machinist and welder and worked for Curtis Machine Shop, Dodge City, until retirement.

He married Virginia Phillip. She died in July of 1965.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Briggs, Phoenix, and Charles Briggs, Highpoint, N.C.; three daughters, Lora McMillan and Donna Hankins and husband, Hank, all of Aurora, Colo., and Diane Creeden and husband, Jack, Sublette; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clarence Briggs; two sisters, Marcell Hale and Lucille Gumbay; and one grandson, Lonnie Mosher.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg, with Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

OLIVIA L. VALLE

RICHFIELD -- Olivia L. Valle, 40, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City following a sudden illness.

She was born Sept. 7, 1959, to Juan and Nellie (Bravo) Lopez at Fort Worth, Texas.

She came to Liberal with her parents as a young girl and attended Liberal schools.

She worked at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal, in housekeeping for eight years. She moved to Ulysses and worked at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital for four years. She had recently moved to Richfield and had been employed by the Elkhart School System for the past three months.

She was a member of the Christian Life Center, Liberal.

She married Refugio B. Rascon Nov. 21, 1977, at Beaver, Okla.

She married Rodolfo Valle March 19, 1999, at Johnson City. He survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Midiam S., Liliana L. and Alma L. Rascon, all of Liberal; her parents, Juan and Nellie Lopez, Liberal; one brother, John Lopez, Denver; four sisters, Jeanette Estrada, Mexia, Texas, Rosa L. Lopez and Natalie A. Perez, both of Liberal, and Lydia L. Arguello, Denver; one granddaughter, Devasha Rascon; and her grandmother, Lydia Calzoncit, Alvanando, Texas.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Miller Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. Ken Willard presiding. Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, 1-8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until service time Monday at Miller Mortuary.

RICHARD A. LEATHERMAN

ULYSSES -- Richard "Rich" Alan Leatherman, 36, son-in-law of Larry and Carol Benedick, Liberal, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Garden City.

He was born Feb. 21, 1963, to Darrell R. and Betty (Mullins) Leatherman in Denver.

He married Susan (Ingels) Leatherman Sept. 18, 1999, in Liberal. She survives.

He was working with Gonzales Well Service as a derrick hand and was highly regarded as the best there was. He was baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Other survivors include two sons, Linden Leatherman, Turpin, Okla., and Corby Williamson, Lamar, Colo.; one infant daughter, Faith Christine Leatherman, of the home; his mother, Betty (Leatherman) Burr and stepfather, Jim Burr, Turpin; two brothers, Marvin Lee Leatherman, Lamar, and James M. Leatherman, Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Bobbi Goodman, Columbia, and Carrell Davidson, Spencer, N.C.; his parent-in-laws, Larry and Carol Benedick, Liberal.

He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Kitch Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. Michael Ide presiding. Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call at Kitch Funeral Home until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the Richard Leatherman Memorial Fund in care of the Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal KS 67901.

SUSIE SCHMIDT

MONTEZUMA -- Susie Schmidt, 87, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Bethel Home, Inc. in Montezuma.

She was born Nov. 11, 1912, to Sam J. and Minnie (Schmidt) Schmidt in Durham.

She married Elmer B. Schmidt March 8, 1936, in Montezuma. He survives.

She came to Montezuma as a young child with her parents in 1917.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Other survivors include one son, Melvin Schmidt and wife, Alberta, Cyrus, Minn.; one daughter, Margaret Brandt and husband, William, Halstead; one brother, Henry Schmidt and wife, Della, Montezuma; four sisters, Alice Smith, Alma O. Dirks, and Dorothy Schmidt and husband, Edwin, all of Montezuma, and Irene Dirks, Wilcox, Ariz; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, one infant and Lee Vern Schmidt; two infant sisters, and one infant daughter, Clara Schmidt.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma, with the Revs. Charles Schmidt, Edwin Classen and Glen Yost presiding. Montezuma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will follow at the North Mennonite Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to a memorial established for Bethel Home Inc. Memorials may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

GLADYS MARIE COTTON

MONTEZUMA -- Gladys Marie Cotton, 97, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Bethel Home, Inc. in Montezuma.

She was born Dec. 1, 1903, to William and Maggie (Cline) Johnson in Stafford.

She married Earl H. McCune May 1922, in Stafford. He died in January of 1971.

She moved to Montezuma May 1977 from St. John.

She was a homemaker and was also very active in church activities.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stafford, the Home Culture Club in Montezuma and Stafford, and the UMW in Stafford.

Survivors include two sons, Manuel McCune, Montezuma and Lloyd McCune and wife, Shelia, Wichita; two daughters, Margaret Good and husband, Bill, Montezuma, and Gloria Sayre and husband, Dale, Springfield, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 5 great- great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman presiding.

Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Stafford Cemetery in Stafford, with the Rev. Lynn Hanson presiding. Montezuma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
