SHIRLEY R. STAPLES

PLAINS -- Shirley R. Staples, 61, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at her home in Plains.

She was born Aug. 20, 1938, to Richard Berry and Ella Elmira (Mohler) Vanderpool just outside of Forgan, Okla., in Beaver County.

She married Larry Sinclair Jan. 24, 1955, in Raton, N.M. He died in 1983. She married John P. Staples June 1, 1984, in Kingsville, Texas. He survives.

She had been a resident of Plains since 1994, moving there from Kismet. She was a homemaker and Para for the Plains School system.

Other survivors include one son, Larry Scot Sinclair, Stevens Point, Wisc.; two daughters, Virginia Beth Howard, Hugoton, and Carolyn DeAnn Deacon, Kismet; one step-son, Wesley Alan Staples, Topeka; one brother, J.W. Vanderpool, Meade; two sisters, Mary Lou Carrington, Henderson, Texas, and Freda Thomas, Beaver; and numerous grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Faith Bible Church in Kismet, with the Rev. Jerry Smitherman presiding. Internment will follow at the Kismet Cemetery.

There will be no visitation, cremation took place.

The family suggests memorials to Southwest Home Care-Hospice in care of the Burkhart Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

ADRIAN T. SKINNER

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Adrian Thomas Skinner, 88, former Seward County resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. He had been admitted to Penrose Hospital Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, for treatment of double pneumonia.

He was born Dec. 7, 1911, to Elliott and Bessie (Thomas) Skinner in Pratt County.

He married Opal Hanner May 14, 1933, at her parent's home in Stevens County. She survives.

He and his family lived in Seward County near Liberal until he was 6. They then moved near Hugoton in Stevens County, where he spent his childhood and early adulthood.

He attended a one-room country school in Stevens County. He was the son of a farmer and chose farming as his lifelong occupation.

He and his wife purchased land south of Limon, Colo., while they were still residing in Kansas. In 1948, they moved their family to Limon, where they lived for three years.

He developed the long building in Limon which now houses a variety of businesses. He moved his family to the farm in 1951. In subsequent years, he purchased more land and continued to raise wheat until his retirement. He and his wife moved to Hugo in 1993.

He served several years on the local school board in Kansas, prior to moving to Colorado. He was very active in community organizations after moving to Colorado.

He was a member of the Limon School Board for 13 years. He received an award for service from the Colorado State School Board Association in 1964. He was one of the organizers and served four years on the Board of the Limon Co-op.

He served six years on the State School Lands Committee. He served on the committee for Lincoln County A.S.C. and the District Committee for Weed Control. He served as both president and treasurer on the Federal Land Bank Board. He was an active member of the Hugo United Methodist Church and served in many leadership positions over the years.

He was an active participant in the Hugo UMC Adult Bible study class.

Other survivors include one daughter, Connie and her husband, Conway Diffee, Fort Gibson, Okla.; one brother, Darrell Skinner and his wife, Virginia, Hugoton; one sister-in-law, Mildred Skinner, Cabot, Ark.; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Heckman, Liberal; two sons, Larry Skinner and wife, Grace, Limon, and Adrian T. "Boon" Skinner and wife, Carolyn, Aurora, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Robyn Clark and her husband, Ed, Winder, Ga., Kirk Sinn and his wife, Ann, Littleton, Colo., Shannon Stone and her husband, Rick, Elizabeth, Colo., Stacie Mercier and husband, Alex, Davis, Calif., Tharyn Hill and wife, Christy, Muskogee, Okla., Trace Hill and wife Tracy, Muskogee, Zachary Skinner, Oxford, Ohio, Joshua Skinner, Fort Collins, Colo.; and nine great-grandchildren, Dylan Clark, Emmi Clark, Riley Sinn, Ashley Stone, Aaron Stone, Emily Mercier, Devyn Hill, Sara Lynn Hill, and Trustyn Nicely; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mervin Skinner; one sister, Ruth Heckman; and one daughter, Karen Sinn.

Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Hugo United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Verna P. Mika and Terry Farmer presiding.

Graveside services and burial were at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hugo.

The family suggests memorials to the Hugo Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 11, Hugo, CO 80821 or to the Hugo United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 386, Hugo, CO 80821.

DALICE L. SCHMITT

GURLEY, Neb. -- Dalice L. Schmitt, 78, sister of Liberal resident, Arlo Ambrosier, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at her home in Gurley following a brief period of leukemia.

She was born Oct. 28, 1921, to James Sr. and Nellie Ambrosier in Hill City.

She married Oscar M. Marty July 27, 1941, in Arizona. He died in 1970. She married John M. Schmitt Feb. 19, 1977, in Sidney, Neb. He survives.

She and her family lived in Kansas before moving to Sidney in 1949.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Lodge. She was a homemaker most of her life. She worked as a waitress at the Fort Sidney Motor Lodge in Sidney and at Nettie's Cafe in Gurley.

Her hobbies included crocheting, garage sales, bird watching, gardening and spending time with her family.

Other survivors include one daughter, Sandra Heaston and her husband, Harry, Sterling, Colo.; one son, Roger Marty and his wife, Donna, Fairbanks, Alas.; one brother, Arlo Ambrosier and his wife, Ellen, Liberal; and eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney, with the Rev. Donna Durrette presiding. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.

Memorials have been established in care of the family.

DOROTHY E. FISHER

MEADE -- Dorothy Eileen Fisher, 80, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at the Meade District Hospital in Meade.

She was born Dec. 5, 1919, to Arthur W. and Viola (Adams) McPheter in Meade.

She married Elmer Ernest Fisher Sept. 19, 1937, in Cimarron. He died May 20, 1983.

She was a lifetime resident of Meade and was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Meade.

Survivors include three sons, Denton, Tom and Ernie Fisher, all of Meade; one daughter, Jamie Chaulopek, Beaver, Okla.; one sister, Thelma Meyers, Dodge City; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Graceland Cemetery in Meade, with the Rev. Chuck Mattix presiding.

The family requested the casket be closed. Friends are welcome to sign the guest register from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday at the Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

The family suggests memorials to the Meade District Hospital or to the Lone Tree Retirement Community in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, P.O. Box F, 212 S. Fowler St., Meade, KS 67864.

GUY H. STUDEBAKER

ELKHART -- Guy H. Studebaker, 85, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

He was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Lefors, Texas, to William Lawrence and Amanda Elizabeth (Dobson) Studebaker.

He was a lifelong resident of Elkhart. He was a farmer and gasoline station owner.

He was a member of First Christian Church, Elkhart.

He married Glanna Loyce Reiger Jan. 10, 1945, in Hugoton. She died May 9, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Crystal Herber, Dalhart, Texas, and Sandy Barnes, Elkhart; one brother, Carl Studebaker, Rolla, Mo.; one sister, Lora Patterson, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Elkhart, with the Revs. Ron Wilson and Jim Cunningham presiding.

Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Harrell Funeral Home, Elkhart.

The family suggests memorials to Morton County Care Center, Elkhart.

FRANCES MARY BOZONE

ROLLA -- Frances Mary Bozone, 90, died Feb. 21, 2000, at the Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born Feb. 20, 1910, to Carl Alfred and Elsie Mae (Jones) Edelman in Flagler, Colo.

She married Samuel W. Bozone in 1934, in Oklahoma.

She was a registered nurse and a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hugoton.

Survivors include two sons, Peter Bozone, Cusseta, Ala., and David Bozone, Rolla; and one sister, Gertrude Gerber, Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Lee; two brothers, Alfred and Earl Edelman; and one sister, Pauline Dooley.

Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence, with the Rev. Peter Bozone presiding.

RUTH E. VAIL BEHNKE

MEADE -- Ruth E. Vail Behnke, 88, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in Meade.

She was born Nov. 27, 1911, to Thomas "T.B." and Essie May (Givler) Novinger in Plains.

She married Russel William Vail Dec. 28, 1933, at her parents' home in rural Plains. He died in an airplane crash March 18, 1946.

She married LaVerne Dwight Behnke Sept. 18, 1949, in Liberal. After their marriage, they lived in Rice County for six years before moving back to Meade County. He died Oct. 1, 1979.

She was a Meade County resident for many years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Meade and Plains, teaching Sunday School fo r both churches for many years, and was a former Kansas district YWCA president. She served as District Officer of the IOTA Sigma (WCTU), she was a member of the Federated Club of Meade and was a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen award from the Meade Chamber of Commerce in 1983.

Survivors include one son, Russell O. Vail, Waterford, Mich., one step-son, Donald E. Behnke, Bedford, Texas; two daughters, Gloria Ann Fruechting and Joyce F. Knott, both of Plains; a step-daughter, Karen M. Behnke, Oxnard, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, six brothers, Charles, Vance, Glenn, Howard (Pat) Henry, and Thomas (Mac) Novinger; and one sister, Nell Dufield.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Plains, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer presiding.

Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery, Plains.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.

The family suggests memorials be sent in lieu of flowers to the Meade County Museum, the Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center, or the United Methodist Church of Plains, or Meade.
