CLETIS F. DOUGHTY
ULYSSES - Cletis F. Doughty, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born July 18, 1918, to John L. and Mary Belle (Ingraham) Doughty in Fellsburg.
He married Clara Leola (Essex) Doughty in Winfield. She died June 30, 1991.
He graduated from Centerview High School and then served in the U.S. navy on a minesweeper. He was a mechanic for John Deere, International Implements, and Chevy. He was employed as a mechanic and bus driver for USD 214, Ulysses, until his retirement.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.
Survivors include one son, Larry Doughty and wife, Betty, Casper, Wyo.; one daughter, Mary Hoffman, Irving, Texas; one brother, Loy D. Doughty, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Deborah Bertoldo, Franklin Ray Hampton, Carolyn Gross, and Jacqueline Walters; and three great-grandchildren, Kamron Michelle Hampton, Angela Jennings and Jenifer Blake.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Melvin Doughty, and Eugene Cloise, and one sister, Lela Leona Doughty.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses with Dr. Max Clayton presiding.
Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.
Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

DR. FRANCIS G. PIKE
SUBLETTE -- Dr. Francis G. Pike, 90, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.
He was born Oct. 22, 1909, to Clyde and Effie (Goff) Pike in Woodward, Okla..
He married Fern Hawkins Sept. 30, 1931, in Medford, Okla. She died Nov. 27, 1993.
He and his wife lived in Wichita for the first 14 years of their married life. They moved from Howard to Sublette in July of 1962, where they owned and operated the Pike Chiropractic Office. He was a chiropractor for over 60 years, before his retirement.
He was a faithful member the Sublette Southern Baptist Church in Sublette. He was a member of the Gideons International for many years and the Kansas Chiropractic Assoc. in Topeka since 1930.
He loved his family and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include one son, Johnnie Pike, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Edith Hale and husband, Wendell, Winfield, and Lois Shrimplin, Sublette; one sister, Elnora Mae Condit, Arkansas City; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beulah Holt; one son-in-law, Eldon Shrimplin; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Pike; one grandson, Ernest Hale; one step-grandson, Jerry E. Smith; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Alan Shrimplin and Stephani Danai Shrimplin.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sublette Southern Baptist Church in Sublette, with the Rev. Jerry Smith presiding. Burial will follow at the Haskell County Cemetery
in Sublette.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

SOPHIA MILLER
HUGOTON -- Sophia Miller, 82, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 24, 1917, to Jacob H. and Anna (Smith) Koehn near Kismet in Seward County.
She married Martin Miller Oct. 13, 1940. He died July 8, 1976.
She attended school in Plains, and at an early age, she cared for her brothers and sisters until they were grown.
She drove a school bus for many years in Kismet and moved to Hutchinson in 1974 with her husband to work in a children's day care center. She moved to Hugoton in 1983.
Survivors include three sons, Robert M. Miller and wife, Chris, Ottawa, James Miller and wife, Bonnie, McPherson, Jacob H. "Jake" Miller and wife, Concha, St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Janice Bond, Liberal; two sisters, Lillian Schmidt, Greensburg, and Ruby Kennedy, Hooker, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Robert, James and Daniel Miller, Janet Paris, Kurtis Bond, Pennie Mosier, Julie Pote and Annik Miller; and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, two sisters, one half-brother and two half-sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Mennonite Church with the Revs. Richard Ratzlaff and Jerry Odle presiding.
Burial will be at the Kismet Cemetery
in Kismet.
Friends may call 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and 8-11 a.m. Friday at the Miller Mortuary.

MARY TRAINOR CLAY
MEADE -- Mary Trainor Clay, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
She was born Sept. 10, 1918, to John and Mary (Doyle) Trainor in County Wicklow, Ireland.
She married Harold Clay Sept. 1, 1940, in St. Albans, N.Y. He died Oct. 9, 1994.
She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Meade since 1942. She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church in Meade.
Survivors include four sons, Traynor Clay, Durango, Colo.; Lance Clay, Angel Fire, N.M., Barry Clay, Manhattan, and Blaise Clay, Kona, Hawaii; four daughters, Lissa McBride, Mobile, Ala., Sheila Scribner, Heather Davis and Lori Crain, all of Meade; two sisters, Kathleen Bieberly, Wellington, and Anne Clay, Meade; and 18 grandchildren.
The vigil service will be at 5 p.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Meade. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Zino Ye Swe presiding.
Burial will be at the family farm in South Meade.
There will be no visitation but the memorial book may be signed until 5 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary in Meade.

JAMES WINDOL WISE
ULYSSES -- James Windol Wise, 85, died Thursday March 2, 2000, at his home in Ulysses.
He was born July 30, 1914, to James Emmit and Mary M. (McKeel) Wise in Bono, Texas.
He married Otehka Caudle Dec. 24, 1942, in Oklahoma City. She survives.
After his marriage, he served in the U.S. Army Airforce during World War II.
He and his wife lived in Texas and Oklahoma before moving to Vilas, Colo. in 1947. They moved to Ulysses in 1953.
He worked for Sam B. Weibe and later worked for the Ulysses Co-op. He started his own business and did custom fertilizing until his retirement at age 74.
He loved his family and enjoyed being with them. He was very outgoing and liked visiting people. He was fond of telling stories of "the good old days." He enjoyed watching baseball.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stratford, Okla., and the V.F.W. in Ada, Okla.
Other survivors include four sons, James "Buddy" Wise and wife, Samma, Eddie Wise and wife, Wanita, Larry Joe Wise and wife, Linda, and Michael Wise, all of Ulysses; one daughter, Jerilyn Foncannon, Centerville, La.; one brother, Raymond Wise and wife, Dorothy, Minneola; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Assembly of God Church in Ulysses, with the Rev. Mike Holman presiding.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles B. Hart, Post No. 79 of Ulysses, at the Ulysses Cemetery.
Friends may call today until 8 p.m., from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

WAYNE W. SMITH
LIBERAL -- Wayne W. Smith, 77, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center.
He was born March 15, 1922, to Eugene H. and Alice E. (Briggs) Smith at Manzanola, Colo.
He married Martha Ann Russell July 8, 1944, at Abilene, Texas. She died Jan. 29, 2000.
He graduated from Manzanola High School and served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II.
For several years he worked in a canning factory. He was employed by the LaJunta Fire Department in Colorado for 24 years, serving four years as fire chief. He was also deputy director of public safety.
He was a member of the South Church of God, Liberal, the Elks Lodge and John Fisher Hose Co., both of LaJunta.
Survivors include two sons, Leslie Smith and wife, Bobbi, Las Vegas, Nev., and Gary Smith and wife, Carla, Liberal; and three grandchildren, Les, Walter and Katrina Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Smith; and one sister, Lorene Guest.
Graveside services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairview Cemetery, LaJunta, with the Rev. David Hellmig presiding.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal and from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home in LaJunta.
