DIANA ANNETTE HOUCK

ULYSSES -- Diana Annette Houck, 60, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

She was born April 27, 1939, to Harold Eugene and Wyona (Lewis) Young in Wichita.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ulysses.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Lee, Ulysses, and Barbara Wooley, Denver, Colo.; her mother of Ulysses; and two sisters, Carol Reilly, Kansas City, Mo., and Billie Branch, Ulysses.

She was preceded in death by her father.

No services are planned.

Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses is in charge of arrangements.

ALVIN G. HERONEMUS

DIGHTON -- Alvin G. Heronemus, 68, brother of Liberal residents Anna Means and Estelene Hoddy, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home in Phoenix, Ariz.

He was born Aug. 20, 1931, to Jake and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Heronemus in Ness City.

He married Wanda Lewis Aug. 12, 1949, in Dighton. She survives.

He grew up in Dighton. He attended Amarillo College and West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas.

He was a teacher and spent his teaching career in New Mexico and Arizona. He retired from the Window Rock School District in Fort Defiance, Ariz.

He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.

His hobbies included carpentry. He built his home and a trading post in Colorado. He had been a resident of Phoenix since 1994.

Other survivors include two sons, Clifford Heronemus, Gallup, N.M., and James Heronemus, Glendale, Ariz.; one daughter, Sherry Deer, San Jose, Calif.; two brothers, Harold Heronemus, Leoti, and Clarence Heronemus, Amarillo, Texas; three sisters, Evelyn Powell, Garden City, Anna Means and Estelene Hoddy, both of Liberal; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton, with the Rev. Tod Anthony presiding.

Burial will follow at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery in Dighton.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton.

The family suggests memorials to the JOY Senior Citizens Center in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, 145 N. Wichita, Dighton, KS 67839.

JAMES ALVA LASHMET

MANTER -- James Alva Lashmet, 61, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at his home in Manter.

He was born Jan. 20, 1939, to Ross L. and Pauline (Ward) Lashmet in Diamond, Mo.

He was a longtime resident of Manter, where he attended the Manter Grade School and graduated from Manter High School. He was also a graduate of the Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.

He was employed for 25 years at Collingwood Grain in Manter and Big Bow. He was a member of the Johnson Falcons R/C Model Airplane Club in Johnson and the National Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Survivors include four brothers, John E. Lashmet, Johnson, Thomas H. Lashmet, Killen, Texas, Robert L. Lashmet, Alva, Mo., Paul Lashmet, Aurora, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Johnson with the Rev. Bob Warner presiding. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.

The family suggests memorials to the donors choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

ARCHIE CARTER

DUMAS, Texas -- Archie Carter, 101, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at the Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dumas.

She was born Feb. 14, 1899, in Hutchinson.

She married L. B. Ellexson. He died in 1964. She married Leo L. Carter. He died in 1967.

She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Dumas since 1970. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dumas.

Survivors include two daughters, Gladys Marquis, Dumas, and Irene Baugh, Farmington, N.M.; two sons, Marvin F. Carter, DeSoto, Texas, and George T. Ellexson, SantaFe Springs, Calif.; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Morrison Memorial Chapel in Dumas, with the Rev. Vince Kolb of the First Presbyterian Church presiding.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call on the family at 406 Willow in Dumas.

The family suggests memorials to the Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch and Family Program, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174.

Morrison Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

BEN J. STANDARD

LIBERAL -- Ben J. Standard, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Feb. 21, 1920, to John L. and Ruth Snow Standard in Lakewood, N.M.

He married Floy Townsend March 9, 1941, in Artesia, N.M. She survives.

He graduated from Artesia, N.M. High School in 1938. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in North Africa, England, France and Belgium as a Master Sergeant. He worked as a lineman and later became construction supervisor for the Mountain States Telephone Company from 1940-1954.

He was an electrician for U.S. Potash in Carlsbad, N.M. He owned and operated two service stations in Carlsbad, N.M. from 1958-1960. He moved to Lawrence, KS in 1960, where he owned the Standard Construction Company until his retirement in 1985.

He moved to Liberal in Dec. 1999.

He was raised in the Baptist church, then became a member of the Lawrence Friends Church in Lawrence. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Santa Fe, N.M. Consistory and the Scottish Rite.

Other survivors include two sons, Ben J. Standard Jr., Meade, and Greg Standard, Kismet; three daughters, Zoe Olson, Carlsbad, N.M., Karen Davis, Topeka, and Pamela Anguiano, Liberal; two brothers, Virgil Standard, Loco Hills, N.M.; Thad Standard, Mesquite, Texas; four sisters, Vera Danning, Portales, N.M.; Inez Steed, Artesia, N.M., Mildred Pennington, Carlsbad, Margaret Head, Odessa, Texas; seven grandchildren, David Olson, Cambridge, Mass.; Robin Fiala, Tucson, Ariz.; Bryce, Brynn and Branton Davis, Topeka; Blake Standard, Meade, and Chloe Anguiano, Liberal, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Funeral services will be conducted 9 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Chapel .

Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will be at the Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Miller Mortuary 1-8 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorials to the Lone Star Friends Church in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln Ave., Liberal, KS, 67901.

BARBARA CHILCOTT

HOUSTON -- Barbara (Brubaker) Chilcott, 90, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Houston, Texas, following a long illness.

She was the wife of the late E.D. "Jake" Chilcott of Hugoton.

She was a graduate of Kansas State University and a former teacher. She had been active in philanthropic and educational organizations and in the Methodist Church.

She served many years on the regional board of the American Heart Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Jan Scussel, Houston, and Anna Belle Zimmerman, St. Louis, Mo.; one son, James Chilcott, Wichita Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren including Janelle Baird of Liberal; and five great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Manhattan.

Memorials are suggested to the Hugoton Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

ELSIE MARIE REDGER

CIMARRON -- Elsie Marie Redger, 70, Montezuma and former Cimarron resident, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at the Garden City Airport in Finney County, following a sudden illness.

She was born Dec. 21, 1929, to Henry and Julia (Unruh) Redger in Gray County.

She was a lifetime resident of this area and had been a resident of Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, since Dec. 1997.

She was a cook at the Ingalls School for 20 years. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron.

Survivors include two brothers, Henry Redger Jr. and wife, Sharon, Montezuma, Donald Redger and wife, Wanda, Ingalls; two brothers-in-law, Marvin Schmidt, Ulysses, and Tom Koehn, Ulysses; one sister-in-law,

Bernice Redger, Montezuma, and several other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James and Ivan Redger, three sisters, Lois Redger, Helen Schmidt and Bernice Ann Koehn; and two nephews, Ronnie Koehn and Levi Koehn

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron, with the Revs. Vernon Giesbrecht, Stuart Jantzen and Keith Ensz presiding.

Burial will be at the Cimarrron Cemetery in Cimarron.

Friends may call today until 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at Montezuma Funeral Home and Friday from 1-7 p.m. at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron.

A memorial has been established for Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma. Memorials may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS.

BERNICE AKERS

ELKHART -- Bernice Blanche Akers, 86, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

She was born Oct. 7, 1913, to John C. and Anna (Hiebert) Peters in Tyrone, Okla.

She married Richard Lionel Akers June 2, 1935, in Turpin, Okla. He survives.

She had been a resident of Eklhard since 1938.

She was a partner with her husband in the Pioneer Men's Store and she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Church of God in Elkhart.

Other survivors include two sons, Dick Akers, Elkart, and Jerry Akers, Hays; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, at the Church of God in Elkhart with the Revs. Ron Crosley and Tony Siebels presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Harrell Funeral Home in Elkhart.

Burial will be at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart.

The family suggests memorials to the Church of God Building Fund or the church's Family Life Center in care of Harrell Funeral Home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.
