LIBERAL -- R.J. (Dick) Hammerschidt, 76, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center in Liberal

Funeral services are pending at Miller Mortuary.

WILLIAM F. McKEEN III

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- William "Willy" Francis McKeen III, 27, died Monday, March 13, 2000, from injuries he sustained while hiking in Big Spring Canyon, Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

He was born June 26, 1972, to Charles and Nancy (Gudeas) McKeen at Salina.

He was a 1990 graduate of Liberal High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1994 from Kansas State University.

At K-State, he was a member of Sigma Nu, the Golden Key National Honor Society, and was a "Willy the Wildcat" team mascot one semester.

He then attended Johnson County Community College in the culinary arts program.

While in the Kansas City area, he was a professional cook at several Plaza area restaurants. In 1996, he spent five months in New Zealand on a work abroad program.

After returning to the United States, he moved to San Marcos, Texas, where he was enrolled in graduate school at Southwest Texas State University. During the summer of 1999, he spent seven weeks in Spain studying for his minor in Spanish. He was to have received his master of arts degree in English May 12.

He was employed at the university as course development and production coordinator in the correspondence department.

Survivors include his parents, Chuck and Nancy McKeen, 1640 N. Roosevelt, Liberal; maternal grandmother, Midge Gudeas, Liberal; paternal grandparents, Bill and Peggy McKeen, Liberal; aunt and uncle, Teresa and Dave Perdue, Dallas, Texas; and three cousins, Charlie, Max and Jonny Perdue.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Stephen B. Saville presiding. Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Kitch Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Kansas State University William McKeen Memorial Fund, in care of Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second St., Liberal, KS 67901.

JEANA MARIE TEETER

MOSCOW -- Jeana Marie Teeter, infant daughter of Jason Earl and Jacquelyn Gay (Hamlin) Teeter, was stillborn Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

Survivors include her parents of Moscow; a brother, Jacob Austin Teeter of the home; maternal grandparents, Jack and Toni Hamlin, Moscow; maternal great-grandparents, Jean Coulter, Hugoton, and Duane and Althea Hamlin, Liberal; paternal grandparents, Earl and Lonna Teeter of Ulysses; and paternal great-grandparents, Melvin and Katie Teeter, Ulysses, and H.A. Lewis, Hugoton.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hugoton Cemetery, with Kevin Yoakum presiding.

Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

ELLA MURPHY

ULYSSES -- Ella Murphy, 89, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses. She had been a resident of Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

She was born Dec. 6, 1910, to Henry John and Maude Florence (Jones) Meyer in Finney County.

She married John Murphy. He died Aug. 25, 1972.

She had moved from Finney County to Ulysses in 1926.

She taught school when she was a young woman. She later worked in the nursery at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

Her hobby was crocheting afghans, and she had won several ribbons at the fair.

Survivors include one son, Johnny Murphy, Norwick; two sisters, Arlene Barnes and Norma Jean Smith, both of Ulysses; and four sisters-in-law, Arlene, Margaret and June Meyer, all of Ulysses, and Reith Meyer of Florence, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Richard Murphy; a sister, Mary Meyer; and four brothers, Bill, Everett, Henry Jr. and Cecil Meyer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Ulysses, with the Rev. Max Clayton presiding.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Garden City.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.

A memorial has been established for the family. Memorials may be mailed to Grant County Funeral Home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

MARTHA KEHN

MONTEZUMA -- Martha Kehn, 70, a resident of Bethel Home Inc. since Oct. 26, 1992, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.

She was born June 27, 1929, to Isaac and Annie (Nightengale) Kehn at Montezuma.

She married Sam A. Ashida Jan. 26, 1960, in Clayton, N.M. He died Sept. 8, 1992.

She was a lifetime resident of Montezuma. She attended grades 1-5 at Homestead Schools and grades 5-8 at Montezuma Grade School.

Her hobbies included making quilt tops, reading, playing dominoes, letter writing, sewing, handwork, visiting with friends and walking. She gathered news for the Montezuma Press for several years.

She was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

Survivors include her sister, Minnie Koehn and husband, Arthur, El Dorado Springs, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Dessie Schmidt and Lena Kehn.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma. Burial will be at the North Mennonite Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home.

LILA M. ASHIDA

Johnson -- Lila M. Ashida, 69, Johnson, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at her home in Johnson.

She was born Jan. 25, 1931, to Ruben and Eutilia (Archuleta) Jiron at Antonito, Colo.

She had lived in Johnson since 1960. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Johnson, and a homemaker.

Her hobbies included quilting, gardening, raising melons, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her six grandchildren.

Survivors include four daughters, Lori Ashida, Johnson, Terri Ashida-Fields and husband, Rob, Guymon, Okla., Debbie Ashida and husband, Kent Schwisow, Johnson, Susan Ashida-Butler and husband, Trey, Parsons; six grandchildren, Samara Fields, Kenneth Butler, Sam Ashida-Butler, Brandon Sam Ashida-Schwisow, Samantha DeLila Ashida-Schwisow, and Connor Fields; two brothers, Herman Jiron, Johnson, and Phillip Jiron, Dupree, S.D.; two sisters, Fracia Shironaka, Johnson, Ofelia Lovato, Ordway, Colo; and one brother-in-law, Gabe LeBlanc, Johnson.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ruben Jiron; three sisters, Francis Gonzales, Tillie Ybarra and Mary LeBlanc.

Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, with funeral mass at 11 a.m Friday, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Johnson, with the Rev. John Kowal presiding.

Burial will be at Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson.

The family suggests memorials to cancer research, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67885.

NELLIE MAE STEWART

DODGE CITY -- Nellie May Stewart, 88, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

She was born May 17, 1911, to C.C. and Maude May (Paulk) Hager in Vernon County, Mo.

She married J. Leslie Stewart March 17, 1935, at Chase. He died June 17, 1993.

She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Dodge City.

She graduated from Chase High School in 1928, then attended Brezee Nazarene College at Hutchinson.

They farmed near Cimarron for 17 years until they moved to Dodge City in 1962.

She worked as a nurses aide at Trinity Hospital and Humana Hospital in Dodge City. She also was a secretary for the Ford County Historical Society, RSVP, Senior Friends and Friendship Meals. She was a member of AARP.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Elane Redger, Liberal, Leona Louise Keene, Seligman, Mo., and Joellyn Marie Cotton, Minot, N.D.; two sons, James Lee Stewart, Westminster, Calif., and Joseph Dee Stewart, Wellington; one sister, Ida Belle Dothage, Jefferson City, Mo.; one brother, Charles Hager, Hutchinson; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Monday at the Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Jerry Ketner and Robert E. Friesen presiding.

Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

The family suggests memorials to the Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

YVONNE L. ECKERT

HALSTEAD -- Yvonne L. Eckert, 65, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born Sept. 12, 1934, to Ronald and Martha (Perkins) Robb in Lawrence. They survive.

She had been a resident of Halstead since 1998, when she moved from Newton. She moved to Schowalter Villa in January.

She was a retired art teacher, having taught at Osawatomie High School and most recently at Halstead High School for 12 years. She retired in 1994.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Halstead. She was a graduate of Lawrence High School and Kansas University, with a master's degree in art education.

Other survivors include one son, David Eckert, Liberal; three brothers, Allan Robb, Fairfax, Va., R. Steven Robb, Pittsburg, and Curtis Robb, Hagerstown, Md.; and one granddaughter, Crystal Eckert.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Halstead, with the Rev. James Mardock presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead. Family will be present from 6:30-8 p.m.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

Memorials are suggested to Yvonne L. Eckert Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, 418 Chestnut, Halstead, KS 67056.
