LEWIS ANDREW ARNOLD

DENVER, Colo. -- Lewis Andrew Arnold, 88, Denver, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Denver.

He was born Feb. 4, 1912, to John and Goldie (Poole) Arnold in Turpin, Okla.

He married Okalee Stuckey Aug. 20, 1950, in Pueblo, Colo. She survives.

He graduated from high school and the University of Eastland, Texas.

He was called to the ministry and served the Church of God. He ministered for 55 years, serving churches in Kansas, Colorado, Montana and Oklahoma. In Kansas, he served at Emporia, Lawrence, Melvern and Chanute, and in Oklahoma he served at Vinita, Blackwell and Texhoma. He retired and moved to Denver.

Other survivors include two sons, Lewis Arnold Jr., Birmingham, Ala., and Elmer Arnold, Denver; one daughter, Patricia Hollsworth, Oberland, Ohio; one brother, Wendell Arnold, Stanton, Colo.; one sister, Nellie Smith, San

Angelo, Texas; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one daughter.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Church of God, Liberal, with the Rev. David Parker officiating.

Inurnment will be at the Liberal Cemetery. Miller Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.

MYRON "JACK" HERNDON

Myron F. "Jack" Herndon, 77, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Aug. 18, 1922, to Frank and Eula L. (Bolerjack) Herndon in Willow Springs, Mo.

He married Geneva M. Love Feb. 4, 1944, in Perryton, Texas. She survives.

He attended school in Perryton and moved to Liberal in 1951. He was an auto mechanic for Hood Chevrolet and later for Stu Emmert Chevrolet for more than thirty years. He worked as a flight mechanic for Beech Aircraft for five years. He later worked for Firestone Tires for several years and retired in 1985. Following his retirement, he ferried cars for Stu Emmert Chevrolet.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166 and the Willow Tree Golf Club, both of Liberal.

Other survivors include two sons, Jack Herndon and wife, Marsha, Oklahoma City, and Wendell Herndon and wife, Mary, Burleson, Texas; one daughter, Beverly Skiles and husband, Michael, Katy, Texas; one brother, Kenneth Herndon, Liberal; one sister, Helen Pittman, Ashland; nine grandchildren, Matt, Eric, Nicholas and Gregory Herndon, Kristel Dry, and Christopher, Stephanie, Samantha and Cody Skiles; and two great-grandchildren, Mason Herndon and Jamey Dry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Miller Chapel with Buddy Bolerjack presiding.

Cremation will follow the funeral service.

Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166 in care of Miller Mortuary, 908 North Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.

GWEN BROCK

Gwen Brock, 71, Liberal, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

She was born July 23, 1928, to Rheubin and Beulah (Andrews) Stroud in Humpress, Okla.

She married John C. Brock in 1975 in Perryton, Texas. He survives.

She had been a resident of Liberal for the past 45 years. She had moved to Liberal from Texas.

She was a homemaker and a waitress. She worked at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant for many years.

Other survivors include one son, Mark Brock, Liberal; five daughters, Vickie Ratzlaff, Brenda Bergdoll, and Shelia Bader all of Granbury, Texas, Sherry Helmke, Liberal, Norma Vargas, Cypress, Texas; two brothers, Clifford Stroud, Carrollton, Texas, and Edward Stroud, Pampa, Texas; one sister, Deanie Powers, Crowell, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Woods presiding.

Burial will be at Restlawn Cemetery, Liberal.

Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch Funeral Home, Liberal.

The family suggests memorials to Liberal Good Samaritan Center, in care of Kitch Funeral Home, 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, KS 67901.

GALE D. CLAY

MEADE -- Gale D. Clay, 76, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born July 27, 1923, to William E. and Muriel I. (Cole) Clay in Meade County.

He married Ann Trainor Oct. 3, 1943, in New York City. She survives.

He was a farmer and a lifetime resident of the Meade area.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and had been a Meade County Emergency Medical Technician for 10 years, most of that time as a volunteer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Other survivors include one son, Brian Clay, Florence; one daughter, Maureen Bell, Dodge City; one sister, Shirley Brown, Red Bluff, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and W.E. "Bill" Clay; and one sister, Vivian Hatfield.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Meade.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Meade, with the Rev. Zino Ye Swe presiding.

Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.

The family suggests memorials to Meade County EMTs, Beam Senior Center or the Meade District Hospital.

SHERMAN DUANE SMITH

Sherman Duane Smith, 63, rural Manhattan, died March 22, 2000, at Mercy Health Center in Manhattan following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 25, 1936, to Howard F. and Elsie M. (Carter) Smith in Liberal.

He married Myrna L. Lofland July 2, 1956, in Liberal. She survives.

He grew up in Liberal and had lived in Manhattan for a short period with his mother before returning to Liberal. He moved back to Manhattan following his retirement from the military in 1976.

He attended Kansas State University. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years as a Sergeant 1st Class and as a career counselor during the last five years. He served two tours in Vietnam and one tour in Thailand.

Following his military service, he worked on air conditioners at the Kansas State University Veterinary Medicine Complex, owned Sherman's Refrigeration, worked at Wamego Social and Rehabilitation Services office for 11 years, and the last couple of years at Manhattan Country Club servicing golf carts before retiring in March 1997.

He loved gardening, reading Western books, watching wildlife, and he had a wonderful sense of humor.

Other survivors include two sons, Wayne R. Smith, Crestline, Calif., and James D. Smith and wife, Cathy, Marietta, N.Y.; one daughter, Norene R. Smith and husband, Brian G. Howard, Ward, Ark.; four sisters, Ramona Woodhouse, Manhattan, Ireta Long, Liberal, Phyllis Sammons, Brightons, Tenn., and Shirley Stover, Irving, Texas; one brother, Kenneth Smith, Tulsa, Okla; and four grandchildren, Emily Anne Smith, Sam J. Smith, Ethan J. Smith, and Adam J. Smith.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lila Gillette; and one brother, Leslie Smith.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Joseph A. Jones presiding. Burial with full military honors followed at Sunrise cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association or the Kansas State University Foundation for the Center for Basic Cancer Research. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

ROBERT M. EISELE

SUBLETTE -- Robert M. Eisele, 85, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Laredo, Texas.

He was born Feb. 15, 1915, to Alfred and Emma (Hornberger) Eisele in Eudora.

He married Mary Lou Lucas May 6, 1939, in Paducah, Ky. She survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He and his wife moved to Sublette in 1946 and farmed north of Sublette until 1965 when they moved to Arizona. When they retired, they moved to South Texas, making their home in San Ygnacio south of Laredo on the Rio Grande.

He was a member of the Christian Church in Sublette where he was a deacon and elder for several years. When he moved to south Texas, he was a member of King's Way Fellowship Church in Zapata.

Survivors include one son, Hayward Eisele, Montrose, Colo.; one daughter, Roberta Trahern, Sublette; one brother, Clifford Eisele, Lenexa; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Delbert Eisele.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at King's Way Fellowship Church in Zapata.

Military graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday by Sublette American Legion Post No. 205, Sublette, with the Rev. Roger Miller presiding.

JAMES I. HOLDEMAN

LIBERAL -- James I. Holdeman, 82, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born June 4, 1917, to James I. and Florence Carey Holdeman in Meade.

He graduated from Meade High School and was a cowboy. He later moved to Manhattan and worked for the railroad for many years. He moved to the Liberal Good Samaritan Center in 1985, after suffering a stroke.

He is survived by one brother, Paul Holdeman, Hugoton; one sister, Anna Kretzing, Silver Spring, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His body was donated to Kansas University Medical Center. Memorial services will be planned for a later date.

Miller Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.

EDNA L. ELLISON

DALLAS, Texas -- Edna L. Ellison, 89, Dallas, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at The Doctor's Hospital in Dallas.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by Miller Mortuary.
