JESSIE GENTZLER

SPRINGFIELD, Colo. -- Jessie Lillian Gentzler, 88, died March 11, 2000, at Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield.

She was born Aug. 20, 1911, in Floris, Okla. She spent her early years in Beaver County, Okla.

She married Simon Peter Gentzler, Feb. 12, 1931, in Hugoton. They spent the first 10 years of their marriage on the Gentzler family farm north of Liberal. From Liberal they moved to Manter and few years later to Big Bow. In the fall of 1946 they moved to Baca County, where they bought a farm north of Springfield. They retired in 1963 and moved to Springfield. Jessie worked in the Dietary department of Southeast Colorado Hospital when it first opened.

They were active members of First Baptist Church in Springfield. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

She is survived by four sons, Wilmot Leon Gentzler and wife, Shirley, Covina, Calif., Richard Franklin Gentzler and wife, Jody, Paonia, Colo.; Gerald Dean Gentlzer and wife, Kathy, Springfield, Colo., Lester Carl Gentzler and wife, Carolyn, Springfield, Colo.; one daughter, Clorinda Mae Quick, Mesa, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, at First Baptist Church in Springfield.

Burial followed the service at Springfield Cemetery.

ADAM J. ROTH

Adam J. Roth, 89, Liberal, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.

He was born April 26, 1910, to Joseph and Christina (Schaefer) Roth in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He came to the United States with his parents as a child, they lived in Topeka in 1913, later moving to Julesburg, Colo., Holcomb and Deerfield, before living on a farm northwest of Plains. He was a millwright for the Light Grain & Milling for 33 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Liberal.

He married Caroline M. Dreitz October 30, 1934, in Plains. She died March 12, 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Pepper and husband, Cliff, Liberal, and Esther Kinney and husband, Ernest, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Father James "Jake" Roth, Claflin; two grandchildren, Connie Jo Foster, Liberal, and Michael Kinney, Wichita; two great-grandchildren, Kelly Foster, Liberal, and Jeffrey Kinney, Wichita.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller Chapel by the Knights of Columbus.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Revs. James J. Roth and Henry Hildebrandt presiding.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

Memorials are suggested to be made for masses in his memory.

MABEL DOROTHY LONG

Johnson -- Mabel Dorothy Long, 95, Johnson, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

She was born July 21, 1904, to Uriah S. and Carrie (Banister) Hague in Rice County.

She had been a resident of Rice, Kiowa and Stanton counties.

She was a homemaker.

She was a charter member of the Big Bow EHU Club; she belonged to Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, and was a strong supporter of the Big Bow 4-H.

She encouraged and assisted students as they attended college.

She married Ralph G. Long July 26, 1924, in Newton. They moved to Stanton County during the blizzard of January 1930. He died Jan. 1, 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Claude Long and wife, Irene, Bartlesville, Okla., and Keith Long and wife, Kathy, Warner Robins, Ga.; three daughters, Betty Anderson and husband, Andrew, Fulton, Texas, Katherine Julian and husband, Milton, Johnson, and Darlene J. Cate, Denver; one sister, Lola Hudgens, Johnson; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Clifford W. Cate.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann presiding.

Burial will be at Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson.

Memorials are suggested to Stanton County Scholarship Foundation, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

H. TOM UNGLES

SATANTA -- H. Tom Ungles, 74, Satanta, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital in Satanta.

He was born April 25, 1925, to Thomas G. and Nora E. (Eales) Ungles in Hutchinson. When he was a baby, his family moved to Satanta.

He attended college at Fort Hays State, then went to work for the newspaper in Goodland. He later worked for the Hi-Plains Journal, Dodge City. He wrote the Satanta Passing Show in the Haskell County Monitor-Chief newspaper. He was office manager for Ashland Oil Co., Satanta, until his retirement.

He cared for his elderly parents until their deaths and cared for other relatives as well.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Satanta; a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge No. 406, Satanta and Hugoton; and a 32nd degree Mason-Scotisch Rite of Free Masonry.

He was also a member of the Haskell County Historical Society and a life member of the Kansas State Historical Society. He was a member of Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners and a bank director for many years at the State Bank of Satanta.

Survivors include one aunt, Lou Ethel Ungles, Satanta, and several cousins, including Delaine Stalker, Satanta, and Bud Ungles, Satanta.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m Friday at United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Larry Myers presiding. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by Masonic Lodge, Hugoton, with burial at the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.

Memorials are suggested to either the United Methodist Church, Satanta, or the Satanta Long Term Care Unit. Memorials may be left at the Shopping Stop True-Value, Satanta, or mailed in care of Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

BAILEE JO PETERSON

LIBERAL -- Bailee Jo Peterson, 15, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, in rural Liberal.

She was born July 31, 1984, to Jody and Keri (Hill) Peterson in Elkhart.

She was a sophomore at Southwestern Heights High School. She was a member of FCCLA, formerly known as Future Homemakers of America.

Survivors include her parents, Jody and Keri (Hill) Peterson of the home; one brother, Justin Peterson and wife, Tabatha, Liberal; a niece, Tristin, and a nephew, Blaine, both of Liberal; her maternal grandparents, Ralph and Jenelle Hill, Amarillo, Texas; paternal grandparents, Jay and Carol Peterson, Guymon, Okla.; great-grandparents, Alex and Nellie Hill, Hooker, Okla.; great-grandmother, Selma Fox, Claremore, Okla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Hooker, with the Rev. Ronald Mimms presiding.

Burial will follow at the Hooker Cemetery.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal.

MARIE CHESTINE MILLER

HUGOTON -- Marie Chestine Miller, 93, Lakewood, Colo., died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Glen Ayr Health Care Center in Lakewood.

She was born Aug. 23, 1906, in Fargo, Okla., to George and Anna (Johnson) Long.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Lakewood since 1981.

She married Arden Snyder in 1930. He preceded her in death.

She married Melvin W. Miller May 26, 1937, in Liberal. He also preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Joan Miller, Golden, Colo.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Danny D. Snyder; one brother and one sister.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Hugoton Cemetery under the direction of Garnand Funeral Home of Hugoton.

LYLE E. "BUD" STEWART

WAMEGO -- Lyle E. "Bud" Stewart, 66, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, in Dwight.

He was born July 16, 1933, to Lyle W. and Mildred (Edwards) Stewart in Wamego.

He was baptized in the Wamego United Methodist Church. He attended Wamego schools where he graduated from high school in 1951. He graduated from Barton County Community College with a degree in criminal justice.

He married Wanda Foy Chesser Sept. 22, 1951, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives.

He was a Kansas state trooper, serving for 26 years, and he retired as a sergeant. He lived most of his life in Wamego until 1966 when he moved to Abilene. He moved to Liberal in 1983 and lived there until 1986. He moved back to Wamego and retired in 1993.

He was a member of the Wamego Historical Society, Wamego Country Club, Wamego Senior Citizen Center, the Columbian Theatre, Wamego Board of Planning and Zoning, Wamego Board of Appeals, and a former member of the Kansas State Troopers Association and the Kansas Police Officers Association.

He enjoyed the outdoors, helping other people, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Other survivors include two sons, Tony Stewart, Topeka, and Chris Stewart and wife, Cathy, Dwight; his mother, Mildred Stewart, Wamego; one sister, JoAnn Yocum, Kansas City, Mo.; an aunt, Aneita Peak, Grants Pass, Ore.; niece, Nancy Huffman; a nephew, Ron Yocum; seven grandchilDren, Amy Saragusa, Lisa Stewart, Jim Stewart, Alyson Stewart, Justin Stewart, David Stewart, and Samantha Stewart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lyle W. Stewart in 1991.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, with the Rev. David Miller presiding.

Burial will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Stewart will lie in state at Stewart Funeral Home today and the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight.

Memorials are suggested to Wamego Senior Citizen Center or to the Wamego Historical Society. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.

NINA BROWN

SATANTA -- Nina L. Brown, 69, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.

She was born May 23, 1930, to George Dallas, and Sarah Louellen (Walters) Nelson in Nicut, Okla.

She married Wiley Lewis Brown, May 22, 1947. He died in 1987.

She came to Satanta in 1954 from Nicut. She was a CNA at Satanta District Hospital, Satanta, for several years. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting, cooking, visiting with her sisters and reading to little children. She was a great storyteller.

Survivors include two daughters, Melody Huff, Wichita, and Darlene Lucas and husband, Randy, Satanta; three brothers, Dallas Nelson, Satanta, Melvin and James Nelson, both of Moldrow, Okla.; three sisters, Maxine Brown, Satanta, Virginia Aronson, Louisburg, and Jerene Hoskinson, Satanta; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Billy Joe Nelson; two sisters, Ailene Jones, and Ramona Sims; and one daughter, Sherry Brown.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Revs. Ray Tweed and Kip Ryherd presiding.

Burial will follow at Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Haskell County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
